Project History• The site was initially identified by U.P. Irrigation

Department in 1971-72. A DPR was prepared by the department in 1992 and submitted to CEA, but it could not be perused by the department due to non-availability of funds.

• In 2000, the project was transferred to Uttara-khand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVNL). A PFR was prepared by UJVNL in Aug 2007. As per the PFR, installed capacity of the project was 66 MW.

• In Aug 2008, the project was transferred to Uttarakhand Irrigation Department. DPR has been prepared by the department and submitted to CEA for approval in Aug’2008.

Design Flood for Diversion Works

• The maximum diversion flood for 1 in 25 years frequency has been computed as 543.15 cum. The maximum observed instantaneous discharge at Tiuni in non-monsoon months from 1977 to 2007 is 558.19 cum. Therefore, according to IS:14815-2000, Design flood for diversion works is adopted as 560 cum.

Sedimentation Analysis• The daily suspended inflow data of 1986-87 to 2006-07 are

available at Ichari dam. As Ichari dam is constructed across the same river d/s of the project and no major river meet in river Tons in between these two projects, the sedimentation analysis done at Ichari dam site has been used for this project.

• Rate of Average sediment transport- 13.75 ha-m/100 km2/Year

• As the project is a run of the river scheme, the reservoir capacity is very less in comparison to the average annual inflow. As per Brune’s & Churchil’s method, trap efficieny of the reservoir tends to zero. Therefore, no siltation problem is foreseen. Moreover, sill level of intake is 8m above sill level of under sluice bay therefore silting of reservoir is not envisaged.

Power Potential Studies• Power Potential Studies have been carried out for the 90%

dependable year. In the 30% year data 90% dependable year is computed as 2006-07 with an annual discharge of 2344 MCM.

• For computation of energy in 90% dependable year the following assumptions are considered:

• Gross head available 65.1m• Environmental flow 3.3 cum• Flushing discharge 20% of design discharge• Efficiency of generator 96%, efficiency of Francis Turbine 92% and

combined efficiency 88.32%• Range of installed capacity studied 60 MW to 84 MW• Incremental energy per MW remains almost constant from 60 MW

to 72 MW and decreases sharply after 72 MW.• On the basis of incremental energy per MW and average annual

energy generation over a period of 10 years period, an installed capacity of 72 MW is adopted.

• Geology Chapter of the DPR is prepared by Geological Survey of India, Dehradun.

• The following Geological Investigations have been carried out:

• 1. Detailed Geological mapping of the area of about 1,00,000 m2 on 1:1000 scale at barrage & surface power house site.

• 2. Drill core logging of six holes aggregating to 247m length, at barrage, surge tank and power house site.

• 3. 3 ‘D’ geological mapping on 1:200 scale of four drifts aggregating to 143m length at barrage, at the

• intermediate adit and between surge tank & power house site.

• 4. Pit logging of 4 pits of 3m x 3m x 3m size aggregating to 27m2 at the barrage & powerhouse site.

• 5. Geological traverse on 1:1000 scale of the proposed desilting arrangement covering 500m & geological traverse in the reservoir area on 1:50,000 scale covering 2 Km.

• Apart from above geological investigations, Regional geology of the project area has been assessed.
