WHAT IS A LANDFILL?

A landfill or historically know as midden is

a carefully engineered depression in the

ground (or built on top of the ground) into

which wastes are put by burial.

Page 5: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

CATEGORIES OF LANDFILLSIN MALAYSIA

1. LANDFILLS OPERATING AT CRITICAL STAGE WITHOUT ANY CONTROL TO PREVENT POLLUTION INTO THE ENVIRONMENT.

2. LANDFILLS SITES (OPEN DUMPSITES)

3. LANDFILLS THAT WERE ALREADY CLOSED (CEASED OPERATION)

4. LANDFILLS WITH UP-TO-DATE TECHNOLOGIES

*Basically, a landfill is like a bathtub in the ground.

Bathtub leak two

ways

Out the bottom

Over the top

LANDFILL PROBLEMS

Air Pollution – Emissions into Atmosphere

• SOURCE: The hazardous contaminated air emissions emitted from the landfill biodegradation.

• There are over ten toxic gases released from landfills, of the most serious of which is methane.

Ground Water pollution - emissions into water

• SOURCE: from leakage of leachates (the liquid that drains or 'leaches' from a landfill).

• The pollution is also severely harmful to animal and plant life.

1. CASE STUDY IN UK

Impacts on health of emission from landfills sites

Documents of health protection agency

(Macklin, Y., et. al,2011)

Page 11: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

Main sources of landfills emission:1) The waste material brought to the sites2) Emissions from transport 3) Waste blown by the wind4) Dust generated from the surface of landfills5) Waste materials deposited in the landfills6) Gas generated (not collected or treated)7) Leachate/ discharges of substances to treat

leachate

LANDFILLS’ HAZARDS

4) PARTICULATE MATTER

3) OTHER GASES

8) BIOAEROSOL

5) METAL COMPOUNDS

6) ODOURS

7) LEACHATE

2) TOXIC ORGANIC MICROPOLLUTANT

Epidemiological studies: landfills and health outcomes

CANCER OF LIVER, BLADDER & BRAIN

BIRTH DEFECTS

OTHERS; SLEEPINESS, HEADACHE, FATIGUE

2. CASE STUDY IN NY

Findings:1.Studies have shown significantly reduced height among

children who live near Love Canal, the chemical waste dump near Niagara Falls, NY.

2. It has also been shown that people living close to landfills suffer from lung and heart diseases from the toxic gasses that are released from the landfill degradation.

3. CASE STUDY IN SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

The groundwater quality in and around two landfills sites

Mohd Raihan Taha, Wan Zuhairi Wan Yaacob, Abd RahimSamsudin & Jasni Yaakob (2011)

Objective : to evaluate levels of contamination around an unengineered site and an

engineered site.

Page 16: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

Ampar Tenang Landfill

Bukit Tagar Landfill

Receives about 100 tons domestic waste per day.

Can handles 3000 tones of waste per day

Lacking: no proper liner system: leakage of leachates

Is a sanitary landfill

Unengineered landfill site

Engineered landfill site

Page 17: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

FINDING:

It shows serious groundwater contamination

in and around unengineered landfill sites

Page 18: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

4. CASE STUDY IN SELANGORWASTE MANAGEMENT AT AMPAR

TENANG LANDFILL Mohd Idrus Hj Mohd Masirin, Mohd Baharudin

Ridzuan, Shahabudin Mustapha & Rashidah Adon @ Mohd Don (2008)

FINDING:

The existing leacheate treatment system is currently not functioning effectively which cause contamination and pollution to the nearby Sungai Labu.

LANDFILL

THREAT

HUMANExample: congenital

anomalies in babies

PLANTS & ANIMALSExample: Breathing

difficulties on common carp

ENVIRONMENT

Example: Air pollution, water contamination

Page 20: PRESENTATION LANDFILLS

Fully engineered landfills that are equipped with compacted clay and geomembrane liner can prevent this effect from occurring.

WAYS TO REDUCE LANDFILL EFFECT
