PhD 

presentations: 

All PhD students at MGMT have to present their PhD project yearly (approximately after 1 year, 

respectively 2 years).

 A

 PhD

 studies

 (a

 so

‐

called pre‐defence‐like activity) is expected to be arranged and carried out by and in the research 

group/centre of  the PhD student. The head of  the research group/centre is responsible for this. All 

MGMT faculty should be invited. 

The presentation: 

At the presentation, the PhD student is expected to present his/her project, to demonstrate 

progress and quality of  the research project, and an ability to present research. The PhD student 

will present in front of  his/her supervisors (preferably both but at least one of  them has to be 

present) and

 two

 appointed

 opponents.

also be invited. 

The duration of  the presentation as such is max. 15 min. (make sure NOT to exceed this time 

limit). When  justified, two relevant field committee members will act as opponents (max. 10 

minutes each), in other cases, i.e. if  a project is outside the expertise of  the field committee 

members, (an)other MGMT faculty member(s) may be called in to act as opponent. The remaining 

time (10 minutes) is left for questions and comments from the rest of  the MGMT faculty attending 

the presentation. 

The supervisors are not to interfere in the presentation or the dialogue afterwards, unless critical 

supplementary information is needed. 

1st  

year 

presentation 

For the presentation after approx. one year of  enrollment, the PhD student is asked to hand in a 

short report (no more than 6‐8 pages) at least 10 working days prior to the presentation. During 

the 1st year presentation the PhD student is supposed to give a status of  the thesis work, choice of  

theory and research design, collected (or planned) data and (if  possible) preliminary results. 

The report should also be an update of  the PhD project description and thus a finalization of  the 

PhD plan (also part of  the evaluation report which has to be made after the second semester) 

addressing a thorough update of  the key elements outlined in the BSS internal guidelines ‘Rules 

and regulations for the PhD programme’

PhD student must send the final report to the MGMT PhD field committee and his/her supervisors, 

and opponents if  other than members of  the MGMT PhD field committee (cc the MGMT PhD

presentation 

At least one (draft) article or, in case of  the student writing a monograph, chapter has to be 

submitted to the MGMT PhD field committee (cc the MGMT PhD administration),  supervisors, 

and,  opponents at least 10 working days prior to the presentation. It makes more sense to 

provide feedback on a paper ready to be submitted (or a finished chapter), but the submitted 

work may also be work‐in‐progress. The presentation should be based on the submitted 

article/chapter but the presentation should also seek to establish the connection between the 

submitted paper and the PhD project as a whole. Slides must be distributed two days ahead of  the 

presentation. 

Also to be handed in prior to the presentation is a one page account of  the more administrative 

progress of  the PhD project (courses, stay abroad etc.). 

Evaluation: 

The MGMT PhD field committee will after each presentation discuss and conclude regarding the 

progress of  the PhD student, the ability to publish research and to present research. One major 

task of  the committee is to assess if  it is possible for a PhD student to finish on time. However, the 

main responsibility for  judging if  the thesis can be expected to be delivered on time lies with the 

supervisor(s). 

In the possible event that the committee has some concerns after the annual presentation, the 

committee will meet with the supervisors. The latter will have the opportunity to provide 

supplementary 

information 

before 

the 

final 

evaluation 

report 

is 

made. 

In order to ensure that important recommendations and/or suggestions for improvement are 

implemented, the MGMT PhD field committee may decide to ask the PhD student to make a 

supplementary presentation during the next presentation round (approximately after 6 months). 

Feedback: 

After the presentation and assessment have been concluded, the head of  the programme does the 

final editing before handing in the PhD field committee’s report on the PhD student’s progress to 

the head of  the Graduate School of  Business and Social Sciences. The PhD student and his/her 

supervisors will
