The AOLS – Celebrating 125 years

• The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS) is a self-governing body, responsible for the licensing and governance of professional land surveyors, in accordance with the Surveyors Act.

• As with all self-governing professions, the AOLS has a responsibility to ensure that the public interest is protected.

• Ontario Land Surveyors (OLS) are professionals who abide by a Code of Ethics, follow prescribed standards and regulations and maintain Continuous Professional Development.

Career Types

Professional Career

Becoming an member of the AOLS means that you are a professional with all the attributes of being part of a self-regulated profession such as the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Technical Support Opportunities

Technologists/Technicians in Land Surveying are typically employed in the private sector or by government. These are the people you normally see in the “field” gathering evidence of property boundaries. They may also be employed in the office analyzing data, performing computations and preparing plans or documents for clients or government agencies.

Typically technologists and technicians report to an Ontario Land Surveyor.

Career Options

Private Sector

In Ontario there are 179 firms offering surveying services to the public. They can range from firms having one OLS with several staff members to firms with several OLSs in one office with a large staff. There are also firms that have multiple branch offices. Many firms are qualified to offer engineering services as well.

Public Sector

OLS’s are employed by:

– Municipalities such as the City of Toronto, City of Hamilton, City of Mississauga, etc.

– Provincial government agencies such as the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, etc.

– Federal government agencies such as Public Works Canada, Natural Resources Canada, etc., and

– Academic institutions such as York University, Ryerson University, Loyalist College, etc.

Academic Requirements

Professional Career • Completion of a baccalaureate level program in Geomatics (land surveying)

approved by the AOLS or a program that is equal in content and level of difficulty, or experience and knowledge that provides equivalent competencies to such an academic program.

• Courses in Geomatics are available in Ontario at York University & Ryerson University.

• Candidates from other educational and experience backgrounds will be

evaluated on a course by course basis or by equivalent experience.

Technical Career • Completion of a college level program in surveying such as that offered by

Loyalist College or Civil Engineering Technology by Georgian College.

• Receive On the Job training with increased responsibility as knowledge is gained.

SHSM Experiential Learning Activity • for Students in Construction and Environment Sectors in the Limestone

District School Board

• Organized by Michael Matthews, OLS and Michael Mol, Limestone District School Board. Phil Chitty, OLS and Leslie Higginson, OLS will also attend.

• Full day workshop – Students will have an opportunity to learn about land surveying, careers and use equipment in an outside activity.

Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) Conference

May 12, 2017 • Two 70-minute Workshops:

• Geomatics and Land Surveying: In this workshop participants will receive an introduction to the field of Geomatics and Land Surveying with an emphasis on emerging labour market trends and future opportunities for students.

• Presentations by John Negru, Technology Teacher, RGSS and Chris Tucker, SHSM Board Lead,York Region District School Board and Maureen Mountjoy, Deputy Registrar, AOLS.

Great Lengths - Information

Sponsorship

– Raised $208,000 in sponsorship from OLS Members

– Part of the sponsorship was to have a copy of Great Lengths delivered to every High School in the province

Content – The book begins with the author’s introduction to and engagement with the

Surveying Profession

– Rather than a pure history this is the stories of surveyors gathered from archival records and over 150 interviews with Land Surveyors

– There are stories of “Visionary Surveyors”, stories of the leaders of the profession and anecdotes of everyday life of a land surveyor
