  2. 2. The Unthinkable Facts In 2010 there were at least forty-nine deaths of children in the UnitedStates due to hyperthermia (heat stroke) from being in hot vehicles. In the previous year (2009) there were a total of at least 33 such fatalitiesin the United States due to hyperthermia after they were left in hot cars,trucks, vans and SUVs. Since 1998 there have been at least a total of 494 of these needlesstragedies.   4. 4. The Facts Heat Up The temperature inside a vehicle can rise about 19F in 10 minutes. Within 30 minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to 120Fwhen its 85F outside. Children left unattended in hot cars account for 24% of fatalities. Childrens thermoregulatory systems are not as efficient as an adults andtheir body temperatures warm at a rate 3 to 5 times faster than an adults. Children that have died from vehicular hyperthermia in the United States(1998-2010) have ranged in age from 5 days to 14 years.   5. 5. Distractions Lead to Disaster The non primary parent is requested to take the child to daycare on theway to work, is focused on the work day ahead, and forgets child is in car. Parent/caregiver is distracted by a phone call or another person, and leaveschild who has fallen asleep in safety seat placed in back seat of automobile(by law). Parent/caregiver decides to quickly run into the store for a minute.
