INTERACTION INnovative TEchnologies and Researches
for a new Airport Concept towards
Turnaround coordinatION
Rubén Martínez
will improve turnaround
processes and its coordination
What is INTERACTION’s aim?
• Enhance each turnaround process time-
efficiently and cost-efficiently
• Reduce airport environmental impact
• Improve coordination and information sharing
processes
Who is INTERACTION?
INTERACTION is a R&D project co-funded by the EC through the FP7
aiming to improve turnaround processes time- and cost-efficiently,
airport environmentally friendliness and processes coordination
INTERACTION:

Integrated Information and decision support platform
The platform receives information from external systems, allowing to combine the knowledge from all stakeholders, and
monitor the status of the airport by having real time accurate information on flights, evaluation of KPIs and alerts
Validation: Live trial in Athens Airport – November 2015
(Currently evaluating the extension of the scope to include pax mobile app)

INTERACTION Performance is
measured in 9 KPAs Predictability Time-efficiency Cost effectiveness
Flexibility Capacity Safety
Quality of service Acceptability
Improvement of knock-off effect
and turn-round variability
Improvement of punctuality and
reduction of turn-round
scheduled duration
Operating costs: reduced
Non-operating: increased
Need further study
Equipment availability &
recovery delay factor improved.
Other KPIs need further study
Reduction of GSE in the apron,
automatic docking movements
and increase in coordination
Improved thanks to reduction
of PBB space and decrease of
turn-round time
Reduction of CO2 emissions
thanks to use of electrical
equipment
Environmental impact
Improved customer experience
and compliance with SLAs
New technologies are expected
to reduce stakeholders inertia
Adaptation & training phase will
be needed
INTERACTION solutions bring improvements in most of the KPAs
studied. The impact of the solutions in cost effectiveness is currently
under study in the Cost Benefit Analysis task
Solutions are being validated &
evaluated in a Business Case
Validation of solutions
Production of a Business Case for each solution
Development of an exploitation plan for each solution
Define way forward within EU ATM innovation
INTERACTION will plan the exploitation of the results obtained and will
measure the improvements brought by the project to the EU ATM.
Afterwards a roadmap for further innovation in the field will be defined.
