m Ksj Vol. 41,'No. 36 Friday, September 6,1996 Preschool play helps foster learning and getting along By Anne Luck Special Writer When a parent sends her child to preschool, 'nere is a certain amount of apprehension on the part of \ Jth parent and child. Most children are quick to adap., however, when they learn that preschool can mean a lot of fun. "Even though free play is also work time, children hardly ever make that distinction," said Candice Stults, the director of curriculum and staff at the Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church Cooperative Nursery School located on South Mill Road in Princeton Junction. During playtime, children have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of important skills. Jean Harris, the director of Kids Corner Cooperative Nursery School on Dey Road in Plainsboro, said, "We have manipulative toys like wooden beads with lacing to build motor skills and stencils for the A -year-olds that we increase in diffi- culty as the year goes on." Children also learn creativity as they become involv- ed with various role-playing situations in the playtime kitchen area, or as they use the wooden blocks to con- struct their very own city or town. At the Dutch Neck Nursery School, a trip on the Dinky train that runs be- tween Princeton and Princeton Junction inspired the kids to use the building biocks in the classroom to simulate their own train station. "They had a train, wore hats, made tickets, and they went to New York. Then, they took their train and went to Disney World," said Ms. Stults. Ms. Harris can also see her students develop their imaginations during playtime. "It's amazing because you can have a class that builds towns that look like Jurassic Park, and then you'll have another class that turns the same blocks into houses." In addition to lessons in creativity, playtime tends to teach some social skills that will help them throughout their lives. : "During playtime, children learn conflict resolution, sharing, turn-taking, and responsibility. They also learn how to relate to others, improve their listening skills, and build their vocabulary," said Ms. Stults. Preschools offer children a wide variety of activities during playtime to aid these learning processes. In the span of only one hour, they may play dress-up in the kitchen area, create a work of art with play dough or oth- er craft materials, build their own town with wooden blocks, or plan and perform an entire puppet show. By supplying a series of open-ended toys, a teacher can in- spire kids to discover and be creative. Outside play is another important aspect of instilling playtime creativity and learning, physical skills and fit- ness. "We like to take the kids outside periodically during the day for fresh air ana exercise," said Jean Rilcj.iiie di- rector of the Princeton Nursery School on Mercer Street in Princeton. "The children learn muscle control with the tricycles and other wheel toys, and are creative with the easel, sandbox, and milk crate boxes. They are learning all the time." Parents who want to inspire this same creativity at home should look for toys and .activities that are similar to those used at their child's.preschool. "The best choices. for building creativity are toys and supplies that can be used in lots of ways, like building materials, play kitchen sets, and arts and crafts," said Ms. Stults. Toys that limit a child's creativity are discouraged. "We don't have action figures, except sometimes for show and tell when children may bring them in from home because that is something special to them," Ms. Harris said. "But they won't play with them in class. They limit creative, play, whereas toys like blocks and Fisher Price people are better for encouraging creativity." However, parents can't expect to get the full pre- school experience at home simply by supplying the prop- er toys and materials. Interaction with peers is another important part of playtime in a preschool. "During playtime, children get to make choices and interact with other children," said Ms. Stults. "When COMMUNITY CALENDAR 3-year-olds come in, they don't play to- gether much at all. They will play by themselves. Then they start noticing the children next to them, and then they start talking. It's a gradual process, and the (4-year-olds) are generally much more social." Ms. Harris explained, "Some stu- dents will engage in what we call paral- lel playing, when the child is sitting side by side with another child but is still playing by himself. In this case, we sometimes suggest that parents try to get children together outside of school. This way they can start to focus more on each other instead of the toy they are playing with when they are actually in school." Children are typically put into classes according to their age in pre- school, with all of the 4-year-olds in one class and all of the 3-year-olds in anoth- er, primarily to encourage interaction. "At this age a really young 4-year-old will have a hard time inter- acting. I think it's harder to play in school when you have a really big age gap," Ms. Harris said. "The younger children are more likely to sit there with their thumb in their mouth and only play with a few little things. I think it's much harder to encourage younger children to play unless they are used to it, for in- stance, if they have an older sibling." Ms. Stults said that sometimes play- ing with someone older works out very well, because often children have sib- lings who may be older. However, she noted, there are times when an older child will give in to them, or the oppo- site, be too bossy. When the children have to learn to work with someone their own age, they are working with similar social skills and verbal skills, so they also need some of that interaction. Sharing is a problem that often develops during play- time in a preschool because the children are just begin- ning to learn how to interact with each other. "Sometimes kids will come here and they will imme- diately find a toy that they really like and they will go for that toy every single da\." Ms. Harris said. "Often, they : wit] jasinvaiit-to keep it fcr theirsehes ihe whole snaa.- and that's very difficult. We just explain that it is the school's toy so everyone needs to get a turn." Since playtime is a chance for children to interact with each other, most of the time the teachers will act as facilitators. The rule in most classrooms during playtime is minimal interference from the adults. "Usually, the head teacher is overseeing it all," said Ms. Stults. "1 might be pulling things off the easel that have been painted, going over to the floor play if I see a problem and helping the children fix it, or reading a story to three or four children. I can't even tell you all the things that I do in an hour. I move contstantly, and I just keep facilitating a healthy, happy classroom." Ms. Harris who is also a teacher at the preschool ex- plained, "Sometimes we actually get in there with the children and play. A lot of times when the children are creating things in the kitchen, they want to give us a cup of tea. Sometimes we get on the floor with them, and we build, or sometimes they'll ask us to come and see some- thing, and they'll want us to participate. We'll come in if there is a problem where we actually think someone is going to get hurt, but we try not to interfere and let them work it out on their own." ; Interaction with other children and creative play with educationai toys are two important building biocks childhood education. Choosing the right schoolBy Robert Gluck

Copley News Service

Which is best, a private or pub-lic school education? The answerrests on understanding your child. Both types of schools offer uniquesituations for today's youth. Whatthe education experts stress, how-ever, is direct parental involvementbeginning with a complete under-standing of the needs of each child.

A public school in the UnitedStates is controlled and maintainedby civil authority, acting through airofficial board expending publicmoney, and open to all local chil-dren. Private schools are indepen-dently financed schools.

In this*area there are both publicand private schools that are contrib-uting to the positive education ofyoung people. Sometimes negativereferences are made toward one orthe other entities with the mediaseemingly blaming "education" forsome or all of society's ills. Listen-ers often translate this into blamingthe public schools.

"It's sort of unfair criticism tosay public schools are no good,"said Paul Krempasky, coordinatorof field placements for the graduateschool of education at Rutgers Uni-versity in New Brunswick. Mr.Krempasky holds degrees in educa-tion, and works finding studentteaching roles for graduate-levelteachers-to-be.

"There are quality public

schools and there are public schoolsthat are not held in such high es-teem," he continued. "What itcomes down to is what you're look-ing for, what you want, for yourchild."

According to Mr. Krempasky, society needs to take a close look atseveral aspects of education."Abandoning public schools in fa-vor of private schools can weakenthe public school system," he said."And sometimes in the less affluentareas like the inner cities studentsmay not have complete access to in-formation and technology whereaschildren in a private school or moreaffluent area will."

What Mr. Krempasky's gradu-ate school tells its trainees who willeventually become teachers is this:"As long as parents are involved, students will do better. Anytimethere's a problem in society peopleseemto point to education, schools. It's unfair to a point. When thereare successes not much credit isgiven to the schools."

Rich Vespucci is a spokesper-son for the New Jersey Departmentof Education, the part of state gov-ernment that regulates publicschools. "Be your own judge. Don'ttake everyone else's opinions.Know your own child. And over-come your own personal baggageyou might be carrying around basedon your educational background,"Mr. Vespucci said. "Parents mustlook at what best fits their child'sneeds."

"There are not automatic posi-tives or negatives involved. Schoolsrun the gamut," Mr. Vespucciadded. "The cost of a schooldoesn't necessarily equate to better.Go into a school and see what'sgoing on, then compare and con-trast."

What are some things the ex-perts agree on that parents shouldlook for when deciding on aschool? Messrs. Krempasky andVespucci recommend the follow-ing: safe, clean, learning environ-ments with supportive teachers;kind, caring, informed professionals(teaching and in the administrativedepartments); specific programs forparental involvement, tuition mon-eys going toward those things thatmost benefit students; a curriculumthat encourages a life-long learningprocess, subjects taught in waysthat are fun; programs that allowstudents to advance- at their" ownpace; and access to technology, such as computers and the Internet.

•Now, as opposed to when ourparents and grandparents went toschool, education is everywhere andit's a life-long proposition. Thoseindividuals who remain prosperousand successful are continually en-hancing their skills, learning newthings, and enjoying the process.

"Kids today will have a differ-ent experience," concluded Mr.Vespucci. "They'll be in and out ofschool all their lives. Most impor-tantly, at this stage of the game, pa-rental involvement is essential."

Ice cream socials are still in vogueIce cream socials first made the

American scene in the late 1800s(primarily as fund-raisers), when theice cream was hand-cranked andusually vanilla. Nowadays, hand-cranked freezers are being replacedby the electric variety, creamy home-made vanilla has been joined by ahost of other flavors, and purchasedice cream is a popular option.

Socials today don't necessarilybring in money, but they still bringpeople together over bowls — andmore bowls — of ice cream. Tradi-tion and the fun of getting togetherhave kept some events going foryears.

"Our church is known for its 'eat-ing' socials," says Wanda Stephens, amember of Rock Mountain LakesBaptist Church in McCalla, Ala.,(near Birmingham), "and one reasonwe have them is to draw folks in andspark their interest in attending serv-ices. The food is wonderful. We havemany good cooks in our congrega-tion, and there seems to be an unspo-ken competition to see who cancreate the most special ice creamflavor."

. For the church's ice cream "sup-pers," the church hall is lined with ta-bles filled with homemade ice creamin fresh blueberry, grape, peach, but-ter pecan, cherry cobbler, and otherflavors, as well as: an array of home-baked desserts.

• About 10 years ago in the St.Louis suburb of Webster Groves, theparents' organization of Holy Re-deemer Catholic School began hold-ing an ice cream-social on the eve ofthe first day of school to help soothefirst-day jitters and encourage parentsto join their group. Across the Mis-sissippi River in tiny Ruma, 111.,members of St. Patrick CatholicChurch serve up more than 150 gal-lons of vanilla ice cream topped withfresh strawberries at the May Straw-berry Festival, now in its 36th year.

The granddaddy of all socials hasto be near Smolan, Kansas, (popula-tion 190), where the annual ice creamevent held by the Salemsborg Luther-an Church goes back to the early1880s. By the turn of the century, ithad become the social event of theyear, drawing people from all overthe state, according to local teacherand historian Tom Holmquist. Photostaken around that time show scoresof wagons and buggies parked nearthis country church, while a row of20-gallon ice cream freezers, hookedby belts and pulleys to a single steamengine, churn away.

Today, the steam engine is goneand the crowds are down to 175 orso, but the ice cream still is home-made. The vanilla is the rich, old-fashioned kind, and the most popularflavors are fresh peach and freshstrawberry.

Around the country, other ice-cream socials also have become tra-ditions.

® In Greensboro, N.C., the annualJuly 4th social at the Rehobeth Unit-ed Methodist Church has been draw-ing crowds for homemade sherbetand ice cream (15 to 20 differentflavors), as well as baked goods, since 1972. (The butter pecan, made, with pecans toasted in melted butter,-is said to be so rich that it remainssoft even when frozen.)

• At Bethany Early ChildhoodLearni ig Center in Highland Park, aChief go suburb, proceeds of the an-nual spring ice cream social and bakesale fund student scholarships andschool improvements. Vanilla icecream donated by a local supermar-ket is served, and everyone makes hisor her own sundae with homemadehot fudge sauce, sprinkles, nuts, andwhipped cream, among other offer-ings. Now in its 26th year, the eventdraws past and present Bethany fami-lies and residents from surroundingcommunities.

Whether they're large events orsmall get-togethers, whether the icecream is homemade or purchased, icecream socials remain a great way tobring people together in the summer, and it's easy to host a social in yourown backyard. Buy half-gallons ofseveral favorite flavors, including achocolate variety for the kids and oneor two of the new low-fat or fat-freeice cream- options. Plan on servingfive to six people from each half-gal-lon (not counting seconds).

Complement the ice cream witheasy, versatile Five-Way SundaeSauce. It's simple: combine pur-chased chocolate syrup and caramelsundae syrup with whipping cream, bring to a boil, then simmer. Removefrom the heat and stir in one of five"add-ins" to create a personalizedtopping flavored with almond, coco-nut, peppermint, peanut or coffee.Make all five variations, if you'dlike, and serve warm or at room tem-perature.

Set out a variety of garnishes —such as brownie chunks, choppedcandy bars, toasted nuts, and whip-ped cream — and make sundaes "toorder" for guests, or invite them tomake their own (with plenty of

scoops and room to spread out). En-joy, and be cool.

Five-Way SundaeYield: about 3/4 cup

1/4 cup chocolate syrup1/4 cup caramel sundae syrup1/4 cup whipping creamAdd-ins:1/4 teaspoon coconut, almond or pep-permint extract, OR2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter,OR1 teaspoon coffee powder dissolvedin 1 teaspoon hot water

In small saucepan, stir togethersyrups and whipping cream. Bring toa boil; reduce heat and simmer 5minutes, stirring occasionally. Re-move from heat and stir in one of theadd-ins. Serve warm or at room tem-perature.

Sundae Suggestions:• Coconut Delight — Drizzle scoopsof chocolate, vanilla, and butter al-mond ice cream with coconut-flavor-ed Five-Way Sundae Sauce. Garnishwith toasted coconut, toasted al-monds, chopped chocolate-coveredcoconut candy bar, and whippedcream.

• Totally Almonds — Drizzle

scoops of chocolate chunk, praline, and strawberry |ice cream with al-mond-flavored Five-Way SundaeSauce. Garnish with chopped toastedalmonds, brownie chunks, chocolatecurls or sprinkles, and whippedcream.

• Purely Peppermint •— Drizzlescoops of chocolate fudge, vanilla, and peppermint ice cream with mint-flavored Five-Way Sundae Sauce.Garnish with peppermint pattyhalves, mint leaves, and whipped

• Peanut Butter Blast — Drizzlescoops of vanilla ice cream with pea-nut butter-flavored Five-Way SundaeSauce. Garnish with chopped pea-nuts, chopped peanut butter cup can-dies, and whipped cream.

• Coffee Fantasy — Drizzlescoops of coffee, chocolate chip, andvanilla fudge swirl ice cream withcoffee-flavored Five-Way SundaeSauce. Planning senior year. By Pricilla ListerCopley News Service

"Senior year is a lot more stress-ful now than when I was in highschool," said Kathy McCoy, a re-searcher -and therapist in Los An-geles.

"The stress for seniors comesfrom uncertainty about what's goingto happen," added Dr. McCoy, a for-mer features editor at Teen magazineand columnist at Seventeen maga-zine.

High school seniors, no matterwhat the era, have probably alwaysbeen uncertain about what the futurewill hold. But in Dr. McCoy's era,the '60s, for example, "we were un-certain but fairly optimistic — theeconomy was very strong. Thesedays, who knows?"

"Kids are seeing their parentsdownsized out of jobs, they're seeingthat college degrees may or may notmake a difference, college is moreexpensive than it ever was, so there's

\a. lot of ambivalence about college,"she said. ,

Dr. McCoy has written 11 booksto help teens cope with today's manystresses. Her latest book is "LifeHappens: A Guidebook for Teen-agers" (Berkeley/Perigee).

She offers some valuable adviceto teens on making the most of theirsenior year in high school whilelooking ahead to the future.

"Whether students are pointed tocollege or the job market, it's impor-tant they have a plan," she said. "Beprepared. Look upon both college ad-missions and job hunting as a job initself."

She said many see senior year inhigh school as a time of letting theirhair down, getting "senioritis."

"But that's not true anymore,"said Dr. McCoy.

Seniors today have a lot of workto do in their last year of high school. Those heading for college may takeon many responsibilities just to makethemselves better candidates for ad-mission. These may include commu-nity service, getting perfect grades, taking advanced-placement classes, even working part time.

"Basically they should do a cal-endar for themselves ... do a calendarof-what one needs to do each monthso deadlines don't sneak up onthem," she advised.

For those seniors bound for col-lege, her advice it to be prepared wellin advance. Find out applicationdates and requirements for all col-leges to be applied to, because theyvary a great deal.

"Decide who's going to writeyour recommendations and ask themearly. Counselors hate it when, on theday before Christmas vacation starts, you tell them you need a letter beforeNew Year's."

Snow will be heresooner than you think!

And don't put off college applica-tion essays until the last moment. ..

"A lot of colleges require essays. If you get a jump-start on those, youwill be a lot less stressed comeChristmastime or the end of the se-mester, when you're dealing with fi-nals. Plan time in advance for yourcollege application process. Kidswho do the best on their applications;are the ones who had a plan, a cal-endar."

Dr. McCoy should know becauseshe also is a California representativeand interviewer of students for ad-mission to her alma mater, North-western University in Evanston, 111.

When it comes to taking thoseScholastic Aptitude Tests, seniorsshould also plan ahead, said Dr.McCoy. If you want the chance totake SATs over again.to better your-score, better take the test early thefirst time, even during junior year. And some colleges have applicationdeadlines before that final SAT testdate in December, so seniors in thatcase must take the October SAT.

Finances for college need a lot oflead time, too. "It can mean sittingdown with your parents and talking, about what seems possible," said Dr.McCoy.

Whether a student needs to seekfinancial aid, work/study programs orcommunity college options, he needsa plan. Likewise, seniors not plan-ning on college need to plan for getJ

ting a job."Don't amble out in May or June

and see if anyone has any jobs," saidDr. McCoy.1 , Those who are not sure what theywant to do should talk to a school orvocational counselor or a teacher.

"Ask someone teaching in an areayou think you'd like to pursue to putyou in touch with people in thatfield," suggested Dr. McCoy. Askwhat it takes to achieve in the field, what kinds of preparation or experi-ence are best.

"Students shouldn't be shy about";'writing or contacting someone who is * •doing what they'd like to do, whetherthat job requires college or not. Get;.some informal mentoring. Most peo-ple will probably be flattered to beasked for advice."

Many high schools have careerdays where professionals from a vari- Jety of fields speak. These speakers^*might be good resources for some ad-ijvice. -X*

"Some students can also avaip;themselves of excellent regional oc-:;cupational programs that are usually Joffered through the high school dis*- Jtrict," suggested Dr. McCoy. I }

"They're excellent because they jfgive really specific job skills. I've 3seen in my "area "everything from bel- jjing a florist to desktop publishing. ; %

"These courses are earmarked for Jthe job market in any given area, and ;they don't cost anything." ; •;

Community college might be an;- jother good alternative, whether tejprepare a student for a four-year col̂ >lege, meanwhile saving money, or to >get training in a specific skill for the <job market. • *

Regardless of which path a senior;takes out of high school, "it's projected all of us will have five to six ca-reers in a lifetime. People today are;changing careers all the time," saidDr. McCoy.
