Sermon: “A Recipe for Resistance”

Date: August 19, 2018

Introducing Kevin T. Long

Kevin T. Long has been hired as the interim director of music at Fellowship Presbyterian Church. A native of Miami, Florida, Kevin is an accomplished musician who began his musical training at ten-years old. His piano teacher quickly noticed that he had a

natural musical talent, and before long she recommended that he move on to another teacher because she could not match his skill level. Kevin has served as minister of music, organist, and choral director at several churches in Florida and Alabama. His concert performances have taken him to the Bahamas, Jamaica, and cities across the United States. One of the highlights of his performances was a three-piano concert performed with noted musicians Samuel Adolphus (deceased) and Jemuel Anderson at the Bethany S.D.A. Church in Miami, Florida. Kevin attended Oakwood College (now University) and was a bass singer with the world-famous Aeolians. He has also taught music at Greater Miami Academy, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and Collier County Public Schools. In 2001, Kevin accepted an invitation to become the accompanist for the Oakwood College Aeolians and returned to Huntsville. He served in that capacity until 2006. He fulfilled a lifelong dream and opened his own music studio, Allegro Music Academy. The Academy offers piano, voice, and guitar lessons to students of all ages. Kevin lives in Harvest with his wife, Laurel, associate vice president for Human Resources at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and his young adult daughter Kelli Camille. Kevin hopes that through his music, hearts will be touched.

Appreciation for Musician’s Service

Although Sunday, August 1, was the first in-person worship at Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC) in many months, it was the last Sunday that Dennis Baptiste Jr., Director of Music Ministry, would be employed in his position. Dennis resigned to accept a full-time position at a church in south Huntsville. Following the sermon, Reverend Bentley (left) presented Dennis with an appreciation plaque for his work with the music ministry.

Visiting with Former Fellowship Family

Submitted by Haley Bone

The Bone Family--Haley (left), Walter, and Chris--had the opportunity in July 2021 to visit with Dr. Jimmie and Mildred Cal at their home in Montgomery, Alabama. We truly enjoyed each moment of our visit because we had a chance to

reminisce about old times at Fellowship Presbyterian Church. The Cals asked about several members of the congregation. I did not realize that they had been gone so long. While visiting, we made sure that we followed all safety guidelines for COVID-19. The Cals sent their love and prayers and a big hello to the church family. They also said that if you are in Montgomery, they would certainly welcome visits.

Brian C. Evans, a recent music education graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, has been hired as an assistant band director in the Wayne County School District, Waynesboro, Mississippi. In that capacity, Brian is responsible for teaching general music and band classes at Wayne Central, a K-8 school in the district, as well as assisting with the Wayne County High School band program. Brian is the son of Gregory and Debra Evans and the grandson of Dr. Richard and Gloria Evans. “For of Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36

Stillman College held its Fall Opening 145th Convocation on September 2, 2021. The speaker was alumnus Reverend Gregory J. Bentley, who serves as pastor of Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Huntsville and is currently also serving as the co-moderator for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, USA. “Be comfortable in your own skin and in your purpose. Stand up to your giants, both real and perceived. As people of faith, we are not people of ‘outlook’ but people of the ‘up look,’” valuable wisdom shared by Reverend Bentley at convocation.

There is no cost for the training, but you will need to pre-register to receive the Zoom link. We look forward to seeing you on October 9! The Prayer of Faith James 5:13-16

“ 13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed

sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”

Self–Care Awareness Month in September is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential. Self-care is often neglected in our everyday lives. We all tend to put others’ needs before our own, and it is crucial to remember that we cannot fill another’s cup from our own empty vessel. While getting a massage or taking a walk are beautiful examples of taking time for our well-being, self-care can be more expansive than that.
