Blue Hose Probables

PC vs. The Field

The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team will take on Bucknell, James Madison and Princeton in the final three games of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. It is the first time that the Blue Hose have taken on any of the teams involved in the field.

Miller’s 10-Course Meal

On Nov. 20, redshirt-junior Pierre Miller continued to feed the ball to his teammates. Miller established a PC Division I school record with 10 assists in the game. He recorded four assists in the first half and six in the final 20 minutes of action. Miller’s school-record assist came with 2:40 left on a three-point bucket by Josh Johnson. The shot gave PC a 64-60 lead.

Troyli And Trouble

Redshirt-sophomore Jake Troyli put together his second double-double of his career in the 67-66 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 20. Troyli scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. It was the second time of his young career that he had accounted for a double-double. The last time Troyli etched a double-double in the ledger was in the win over VMI on Jan. 9, 2010. That game, Troyli accounted for 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Coleman’s Way

Presbyterian College Four Like To Score

Two years ago, Al’Lonzo Coleman, Josh Johnson and Pierre Miller accounted for nearly 60 percent of the team’s scoring. After the three redshirted last year, things have changed a little bit. During the last two games, Coleman, Johnson, Jake Troyli and Khalid Mutakkabir have reached double figures. In the near-upset of #3 Kansas State, Coleman had 15 points while Johnson had 14. Mutakkabir added 13 and Troyli had 12. In the win over the Colonels, the four once again reached double figures. Coleman poured in 18 points while Troyli had 16. Johnson tallied 14 and Mutakabbir notched 10.

Lighting It Up

For the second straight game, head coach Gregg Nibert’s team netted over 50 percent of its shots. In the win over EKU, the Blue Hose drained 27-of-46 from the field for a staggering 58.7 percent. For good measure, the team connected on eight-of-14 from behind the arc for 57.1 percent.

Blue Hose Playing Lights Out

The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team is shooting lights out from the field over the last two games. After hitting on 45.8 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes of play against EKU, the team hit nearly 75 percent of its shots in the final half. The Blue Hose drilled 16-of-22 shots from the floor for 72.7 percent, helping the team win 67-66.

Miller’s A 40-Minute Man

Although Khalid Mutakabbir led the conference in minutes played a year ago with a PC Division-I school record 1,090 minutes, he may have some competition this year from his own teammate. Through three games, redshirt-junior Pierre Miller has played all but five minutes while Mutakabbir has been on the bench for eight of the 120 minutes the Blue Hose have played. In the win over EKU, Miller was the first PC player this season to have played the entire game.

Lending A Helping Hand

The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team is always looking out for each other – and it was never more evident than in the win over Eastern Kentucky. The 23 assists was the second most in a game for PC’s Division I history. It was also the most assists that the Blue Hose have ever dished out against a Division I opponent. PC’s Division I school record came when the team accounted for 28 assists in the win over Carver Bible College.

More Than Doubling It Up

For the first time this season, the Blue Hose dished out more assists than turnovers in a game during the win over the Colonels. The team did so in a major way. While the team committed 11 turnovers, PC dished out a season-high and a near-record setting effort of 23 assists. Even with the 11 turnovers, the Blue Hose defense clamped down, allowing just nine points off their miscues.

Dominating The Paint

With a tremendous inside game this year, the Blue Hose showed how dominant they could be inside the paint with the win over Eastern Kentucky. The team outscored the Colonels 34-14 in the paint.

All The Small Things

In the win over EKU, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team did all the small things right, helping add up for the win. The team outscored the Colonels 13-9 in points off turnovers and 9-6 in second-chance points.

Looking Back At 67-66

On Jan. 5, 2009, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team played in a game that ended with a 67-66 score. That day, the Blue Hose won a double-overtime thriller over the Flames of Liberty. That was one for the record books – as Pierre Miller scored a career-high 22 points. That game, Josh Johnson poured in 17 while Al’Lonzo Coleman scored 12 and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The one note that sticks out – Miller and Johnson played all 50 minutes while Coleman played 45 in the double-overtime contest. What They Are Saying

During the Presbyterian College-Kansas State game on Thursday, Nov. 18, the commentators said multiple times that redshirt-junior Al’Lonzo Coleman was “very impressive.” They also stated he would be one of the “more accomplished” players that the third-ranked Wildcats would face this season.

Total Team Effort

During the near-upset of No. 3 Kansas State, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team had nine student-athletes – all of the available players – play in the game. Six players recorded points in the ledger while seven posted some form of a positive statistic.

Presbyterian College

Starters vs. Starters

The Presbyterian College-Kansas State game was an interesting contest. Despite being within three with just a few minutes to play and falling, there are several positive statistics to take from the game. One of the biggest notes that jumps out is the comparison of the starters. The Blue Hose outscored the Wildcats’ starting five by a combined 62-44.

Second-Half Surge

After trailing by 14 points at the intermission and being down by 15 with 16:27 to play, head coach Gregg Nibert’s team got hot in the second half. The squad outscored the No. 3 Wildcats 37-32 in the final 20 minutes of the game. During the superb second-half run, the Blue Hose canned 14-of-23 shots from the field for 60.9 percent. That same time, PC held Kansas State to 34.4 percent on 11-of-32 shooting from the floor.

Never Give Up

The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team never gives up. Since the move to Division I, observers can say that the Blue Hose are one of the squads that has fight in them every single minute of every game. Going against the toughest opponent that PC has ever faced, head coach Gregg Nibert’s team did not back down. The Blue Hose gave the Wildcats a scare, cutting the 15-point second-half deficit to three with just over three minutes to play.

Presbyterian College WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE?

“A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose.” Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, “What’s In A Nickname” delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia ... (quoting from Walter Johnson’s letter) ‘It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.” ... in later years “Stocking” became abbreviated to “the Hose,” particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950’s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled “The Spirt of PC.” The piece by Hammet articulated that, “Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson’s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase “Blue Stocking Presbyterian” goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination’s history.” Nevertheless, PC’s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954.

JUST PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE, PLEASE The Presbyterian College athletics department would prefer that media reference the institution as Presbyterian College upon first reference. After that, PC or Blue Hose are suitable. The department does not want to be referred to as “Presby,” or just “Presbyterian.”

Presbyterian College

The 2010-11 season will be head coach Gregg Nibert’s 22nd in charge of the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team. The winningest coach in the program’s history, Nibert has led the Blue Hose to 349 wins during his 21 years at the helm of the team. Overall, PC has compiled a record of 349-274 during his tenure. Last season, Nibert took the youngest team in the nation into some of the most difficult places to play as he redshirted three juniors which comprised nearly 60 percent of the team’s offense during the 2008-09 season. The Blue Hose put together a solid season that saw them be in every league game. He also helped guide PC to a win in the BracketBusters tournament over Jacksonville State, helping the Big South go 2-2 in the field. On Jan. 9, Nibert’s team overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat VMI in overtime, 89-75. The win also marked the highest point total in PC’s Division I history over a Division I opponent. In his first season in the Big South Conference, Nibert guided the Blue Hose to a .500 record, finishing the year 9-9 in conference play. The squad put together some tremendous wins, including victories over UC Davis, San Jose State and Army in non-conference play. During the Big South portion of the schedule, Nibert’s team began its history in the league by posting wins at Coastal Carolina and High Point. The squad was on TV three times, including the Nov. 10 season-opener at Duke, which was televised by ESPNU. The game marked the first nationally televised contest for any

Blue Hose team in school history. Al’Lonzo Coleman was recognized as a second-team all-conference selection for his tremendous effort while also garnering a place on the all-academic team. Nibert is the first men’s basketball coach in Presbyterian College history to reach the 300-win plateau, an honor he reached during the 2005-06 season after becoming the first to accomplish 200 wins at PC in the 2000-01 season. Chase Holmes picked up the Freshman of the Week award aver scoring a career-high 24 points en route to a victory over VMI in which PC held the Keydets to 38 points below their NCAA-leading points per game average. During his 20-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has compiled six 20-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings 14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice (1992-93 & 1996-97) and the Food Lion SAC Tournament title once (1995-96). He has also been named the SAC Coach-of-the-Year twice for his efforts (1993 and 1997). Nibert is also the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead the institution to two different postseason tournaments; guiding the Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2003, and 2006. Nibert is also the only coach in the history of the SAC to coach a squad to the “Sweet 16” of the Division II Tournament. Even more impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from Presbyterian during his tenure. Nibert led PC to its first ever win at the NCAA Division I level on Dec. 1, 2007 when the Blue Hose defeated Big South Conference foe Radford, 62-60, at the Templeton Center. Overall, PC finished its first NCAA Division I season with five victories. The Blue Hose won all five of their games at home to enter the 2008-09 campaign in the midst of a 12-game home winning streak, which places them tied for the 14th longest active home winning streak in all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. One year earlier in their final year in NCAA Division II in the 2006-07 season, the Blue Hose posted a 20-9 record to finish with two consecutive 20-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play in second with a 12-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate. In the 2005-06 campaign, PC compiled a 25-10 overall record including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the finals of the 2006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. In the 2004-05 season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an 18-11 overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program record-tying 27 wins against nine losses in the 2002-03

program’s second SAC regular season title along with its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Blue Hose received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 15 in the country. His 1995-96 team won the program’s first-ever SAC Tournament title and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 1993, Nibert led the Blue Hose team which captured the SAC regular season championship and won a school record 27 games to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The national tournament appearance was the first-ever for Presbyterian College. For his efforts, Nibert was named the Coach of the Year for the state of South Carolina, the South Atlantic Conference and NAIA District 26. Well respected among fellow coaches, Nibert has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 30 years and has also been a NABC Division II Basketball Congressman. Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp of Champions Team Camp is in its 21st year and has attracted thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus. Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian’s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a 57-35 ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis’ spot at the helm of Furman’s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant’s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian’s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, 1989. While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (20) and Van (16). Shaun is a junior at PC, and Van is a junior at Clinton High School.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite the return of redshirt-juniors Al’Lonzo Coleman, Josh Johnson and Pierre Miller, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team was unable to defeat Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt Friday evening in the season opener for both teams, falling 88-47. The Blue Hose (0-1) were led by Coleman, a preseason all-conference selection. Coleman, who red-shirted a season ago, poured in a team-high 17 points on eight-of-15 shooting from the floor. He also pulled down a squad-best six boards and for good measure, recorded three thefts. Johnson also reached double figures, netting 11 in the loss. Collectively, PC hit 17-of-53 shots (32.1 percent) from the floor, including four-of-14 from behind the three-point line (28.6 percent). The charity stripe worked well for the Blue Hose, who sank all seven attempts. Trailing 5-0 just 1:30 into the contest, Coleman got things going for the visitors with a lay-up, cutting the deficit to three. Coleman connected on two more buck-ets over the following 80 seconds, putting the score at 10-6 in favor of Vanderbilt. With the margin at 10, Miller drained a deep three-point shot to slice the deficit to seven, 16-9. The Com-modores came back with a three of their own before Coleman hit a short jumper to make it 19-11. Vanderbilt pushed the margin to 13 on multiple occa-sions, but Johnson hit a three ball, cutting the score to 10 with 7:08 to go in the opening half. PC did a solid job of keeping the score within striking distance in the first half. After a Khalid Mutakabbir miss, Coleman cor-ralled the rebound and put it back up with 4:55 to play, making the score 30-20. The teams traded buckets the next two trips down the court, with PC’s two coming from an inside shot by Johnson. However, PC missed its next four shots while the Commodores went on a 10-0 run in a two-minute span for the 42-22 halftime lead. Despite trailing at the break, PC had more points off turnovers and second-chance points than the home squad. The 10-0 run that ended the first stanza was repeated by Vanderbilt to start the second as the score was 54-24 with 16:31 to play. Miller ended the drought with a short runner with just under 16 minutes remaining. Coleman’s three-ball concluded a 7-2 run by head coach Gregg Nibert’s team over a 2:26 span. It helped trim the score from a 30-point deficit to 25 points, but PC could get no closer the rest of the way.

MANHATTAN, Kan. —The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team gave No.3 Kansas State a run for its money as the Blue Hose pulled within four points with 3:38 left in the second half. PC battled back from a 14-point first-half deficit and came as close as three points before ultimately falling 76-67 to the Wildcats. Facing the highest ranked opponent in Division I history, PC shot 50 percent from the field and 60 percent from behind the three point line. The Blue Hose held the Wildcats to a 44.8 field goal percentage and grabbed 25 defensive rebounds to Kansas State’s 17. Al’Lonzo Coleman led PC with 15 points and had a game-high 14 total rebounds while Josh Johnson had 14 points and Khalid Mutakabbir chipped in 13, includ-ing three buckets from behind the three point line. The Blue Hose took an early lead, 6-5, off of a three-point basket by Mutakabbir at the 17:04 mark but Kansas State sank back-to-back field goals to regain the lead. The Wildcats extended their advantage to 10 points with 8:38 remaining in the half, but Miller helped bring PC back within five with consecutive baskets, including his second three pointer of the game. Trailing 30-20 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Coleman hit a jumper to pull PC within eight. The Wildcats, however, responded with two quick baskets to extend their lead to 34-22 and would eventually stretch it to 14 points. Johnson hit his second three pointer of the half with two and a half minutes left and Allen chipped in another three with just over one minute left to keep the deficit at 14 points and the Wildcats headed to the locker room with a 44-30 lead at the end of the first half. Coleman led all players with eight rebounds in the first half, and tied Miller with eight first half points. PC started the second half with two field goals to bring the score to 44-34 before Kansas State found the basket. A three-point play by Troyli at the 16:09 mark kept the Wildcat lead in check, with the home team leading 51-39. The Blue Hose kept clawing back, however, and after a fast break that resulted in a pair of free throws for Johnson the score was 51-43. The PC defense held the Wildcats on an ensuing possession and with 13:30 left in the game a layup from Allen cut the Kansas State lead to only eight points. A pair of missed free throws for the Wildcats gave PC the ball and Coleman’s layup at 12:32 made the score 57-51, and then Mutakabbir hit a big three pointer with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game to cut in the Wildcat’s lead yet again, and the Blue Hose trailed by five, 59-55. The Blue Hose stayed strong and kept chipping away at the lead and back to back three pointers by PC pulled them within three, 63-60, with 7:34 remaining in the game. Kansas State hit a jumper at the seven minute mark, followed by one of two free throws to take a 66-60 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes until Troyli hit a jumper at the 3:38 mark to pull PC back within four points at 69-65. Johnson then corralled a rebound off a missed three-point attempt by Jacob Pullen. However, PC was whistled for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to the home squad. The Wildcats went up by six on a second-chance basket with 2:28 to play. On the next possession for the Blue Hose, Coleman was whistled for his fifth foul. A three-point shot by KSU stretched the lead to nine and the Wildcats pushed it to 11 before Troyli’s 15-foot jumper with 18 seconds left accounted for the final points of the contest.

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team secured its first win of the 2010-2011 season in dramatic fashion, winning a close contest on the road over Eastern Kentucky 67-66 in the final minutes. The Blue Hose battled in the final seconds, ultimately grabbing the victory. Al’Lonzo Coleman led all scorers with 18 points, while Jake Troyli was close behind with 16. Josh Johnson had 14 points, including four baskets from behind the three point line. The Blue Hose shot 58.7 percent from the field, going 27-46 for the game. The win advances PC to 1-2 on the season, while Eastern Kentucky moves to 2-3. Eastern Kentucky hit the first basket of the game, but Johnson’s three at the 17:54 mark was soon followed by a jumper from Troyli to give PC its first lead of the game. Johnson’s second three of the game gave the Blue Hose an 8-3 margin with 16:37 remaining. The team traded baskets over the next four minutes and after Coleman sank a lay-up off an inbounds pass, the Colonels answered with a basket at 13:41 to make the score 12-8 in favor of PC. Eastern Kentucky then cut into PC’s lead with a pair of baskets, and a three pointer at the 8:52 mark gave the Colonels their first lead of the game, 18-16. The Blue Hose soon regained the advantage, however, on a three pointer from Troyli, and after a pair of EKU free throws Mutakabbir’s first basket of the game put PC up 22-20 with 6:34 left in the half. The score remained the same until Eastern Kentucky hit one of two free throws at the 3:15 mark, but Mutak-abbir’s jumper on the ensuing possession kept the PC lead, 24-21. After two more free throws for the Colonels with just under two minutes remaining, the Blue Hose sank two more baskets in the half to take a 28-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. PC opened the scoring in the second half with a basket from Coleman at 19:09, and a three pointer by the Colonels make the score 30-26. Eastern Kentucky then closed the game to one point after a three point play, but Allen hit a trey at the 15:57 mark to give PC a 35-31 advantage. EKU fought back to tie the game 37-37 with 15:20 remaining, and despite help from a Johnson three pointer, the Colonels again tied the game at 42-42. The home team then took the lead off a three pointer at 12:42 to go up 45-42. With just under six minutes remaining in the game, Troyli sank a basket and then a defensive stop resulted in a fast break for Miller to give PC a 55-52 lead. Both teams continued to battle back and forth until a clutch three pointer by Johnson put the Blue Hose on top 64-60 with 2:26 left in the game. The home team pulled within two points with a basket at 2:09, and Coleman’s one free throw was answered by a pair of free throws for the Colonels to make PC’s lead only one point with 1:20 remaining. Troyli’s jumper with 52 seconds on the clock was again answered by Eastern Kentucky, which sank a basket with 44 seconds remaining to keep PC’s lead at one, 67-66. The Colonels had a shot when a foul sent them to the line with just over 10 seconds left, but missing the front end of the one-and-one gave PC the ball back and the Blue Hose held on for the victory in the final seconds. For the game, Pierre Miller established a PC Division I school record with 10 assists, helping head coach Gregg Nibert secure his 350th career victory.
