Cow Splat! Daisy Takes An Unexpected

Dip

3:28pm UK, Thursday May 14, 2009

An intrepid cow has made a big splash with one

Buckinghamshire family, after breaking in to their back

garden and testing out the swimming pool.Ruth Scott, who runs a travel agency, was working from home when

the family noticed a small herd of cows roaming around the

flowerbeds. But surprise quickly turned to shock when one of the

beasts fell into the pool.

Mrs Scott, of Milton Keynes, said: "My son-in-law Mark was in the

shower when his wife Zoe called out that there were cows in the

garden. "The next thing we realised, one was in the swimming pool.

It started to swim down to the deep end, which was very scary."

Mrs Scott called the fire brigade and the farmer who owns the

cows, while Mark tried to free the struggling cow which was trying

to climb over the side. After much splashing around, it eventually

found its way back to the shallow end.

Mrs Scott said: "It looked like it was going to hit its head, but it

righted itself, then casually walked up the steps. The farmer and fire

brigade arrived just then, as it made its way out. We felt slightly

ridiculous.“

The cow is now safely back on dry land in its field next door.

Puppy Saved In Dramatic Toilet Rescue

11:34am UK, Monday June 15, 2009

A week-old cocker spaniel was the subject of an emergency

rescue after being accidentally flushed down his owner's toilet.

The tiny pooch was trapped in a waste pipe for almost four hours

after four-year-old Daniel Blair decided he "needed a wash" in the

loo and pulled the chain.

Frantic attempts to find the flushed puppy began, but all efforts by

the fire brigade and the RSPCA at the house in Northolt,

Middlesex, failed.

The 'plumb' job landed to drain experts Dyno-Rod, who used

specialist camera gear to locate the crying pet in a pipe 20 yards

away from the Blairs' home

Neighbours were warned not to flush their toilets to prevent him

from being pushed into the main sewer and an engineer from the

Will Craig, 22, from Harrow in Middlesex, said he was initially

reluctant to nudge the pup towards a manhole cover, "because I was

scared of hurting (him)"."But the RSPCA said I was his only

hope," he told the Daily Mirror. "Eventually I pushed him far

enough for the firemen to grab."

Squirrels Start Fire At MP's Home

19:33, UK, Thursday 08 January 2009

Squirrels have been blamed for setting a former attorney

general's house on fire.

The rodents are believed to have gnawed their way through cables,

sparking the blaze at the property belonging to former MP Lord

Mayhew on Wednesday afternoon.Firefighters battled the flames for

almost two hours at the two-storey cottage in Goudhurst, near

Cranbrook, Kent.

Lord Mayhew told the Kent Messenger: "The fire broke out in a

void behind an airing cupboard and the most probable cause was

squirrels chewing through cables.

Banker Rescues Ducklings Left High And

Dry 3:46pm UK, Wednesday May 20, 2009

A quick-thinking banker has endeared himself to the people of

Washington State by rescuing a family of ducks stranded on the

second floor of a building.

The mother duck built her nest outside Joel Armstrong's

window in the centre of Spokan city, near the river and, for the

next 35 days, Mr Armstrong watched events unfold with

interest.

But he soon discovered he was in for another surprise when he

realised the duck needed to take her babies to fresh water.

Realising what was wrong, Mr Armstrong ran downstairs and took

up his position on the pavement below, next to the mother duck who

was quacking encouragement to her babies.

The banker kept his eyes on the ducklings while chatting

reassuringly to their mum. Then the ducklings moved, two jumping

right into his hands. Gradually, the other ducklings followed and

each was caught safely and passed over to mother duck.
