PREPARING THE WAYFOR CHRIST'S COMING

Have you ever served in a weddingceremony or been involved in planningand giving a banquet or party? If you

have, think back upon your experiences. Whatone thing, more than any other, determined thesuccess-or failure-of that big event? If yousaid "PREPARATION," you are right!

No important event, like a wedding, can besuccessful without proper preparation. Coronations of kings and inaugural ceremonies forpresidents require much preparation. Mr.Herbert W. Armstrong's campaigns andmeetings with heads of states require manyhours-sometimes weeks-of preparation.

God knows the importance of preparation. He saw to it that the beginning of Christ'sministry was prepared for sufficiently. Thislesson will explain John the Baptist's role inpreparing for Christ's first coming, and howGod is preparing for Christ's second comingand what your part is in that! Finally, thislesson will explain how Jesus Christ qualifiedto replace Satan as world ruler before Hispublic ministry began, and how He began toprepare the foundational members of a team toassist Him in preaching the gospel to the worldand to help rule the nations in the Millennium(Matt. 28:19; 19:28).

GOD CHOOSES ONE TO PREPARETHE WAY

Sometimes when God has a specific purposeHe wants someone to fulfill, He chooses theperson before birth. God chose Samuel andJeremiah before they were born. And it was thesame with John the Baptist.

The events that led to the birth of John theBaptist are found in Luke chapter 1. John'sfather, Zacharias, was a priest. He and his wifeElisabeth had wanted a child for some time, but Elisabeth was unable to have children. Oneday, while Zacharias was fulfilling his duties asa priest in the Temple, an angel of Godappeared to him. The angel told him thatElisabeth would have a son and they were toname him John.

Notice in Luke 1:6 what God had to sayabout Zacharias and Elisabeth: "And theywere before God, walk-mg in the and ordi-nances of the Lord ." Godcarefully chose the parents of John the Baptist, the one who would prepare the way for Christ.God knew that John would receive the propertraining necessary to fulfill His purpose fromparents who were obedient to God's commandments.

Zacharias asked the angel how he could besure that he and his wife would indeed have ason. He wondered if it was all just a dream. The angel replied that Zacharias would beunable to speak until John's circumcision eightdays after his birth.

JOHN THE BAPTIST'S MINISTRY

Luke records in chapter 3 that John cameinto the area around the Jordan Riverpreaching "the baptism of repentance for theremission [pardon or forgiveness] of sins "(verse 3). John told the people that they shouldbe immersed (baptized) in water as an outwardsign which would show the serious commitmentthey were making to live differently-to live inobedience to God 's laws.

He taught the people that they shouldindividually "bring forth therefore fruitsworthy of [as proof of] repentance." He addedthat the y should not expect to receive specialspiritual treatment from God because theirancestor (Abraham) was a righteous man(verse 8). Rather, they would have to berighteous, too!

Many people did more than just listen to John! They realized that repentance and bringing forth

__________ for the Lord."

John the Baptist was to prepare the way forJesus Christ's ministry by turning the people'sattention back to God and the things of God.He was to lead the people to repent-to changethe direction of their lives-so that they wouldbegin to live by God 's Law-the way of " give."Then when Christ began to preach in public,He would have a group of people from which afew could be chosen for special training.

Christ will soon replace all human rulers when Hereturns as King of kings over all the earth.

WHAT JOHN WAS TO DO

On the day of John's circumcision, Elisabeth's relatives said the boy should be namedafter his father. Elisabeth said no. So theyasked Zacharias. Still unable to speak, hewrote, "His name is John." At that verymoment, Zacharias was able to speak again. Both Zacharias and Elisabeth insisted heshould be named John in accordance withGod 's command to do so. Immediately afterthis , Zacharias was inspired by God 's Spirit topronounce a prophecy. In it he described whatJohn would do. Notice Luke I :76-78: "Andthou, child, shalt be called the of theHighest: for thou shalt_____ the face of the to

To of salvationunto His people by the remission of their sins,Through the tender mercy of our God."

The angel Gabriel also described John'scommission when he announced his future

good fruits meant doing something. "What shallwe do then?" they asked.

John 's reply is in verses 11-14: "Heanswereth and saith unto them, He that hathtwo coats, let him [give] to himthat hath none; and he that hath meat [food],let him . Then came alsopublicans [tax collectors] to be baptized, andsaid unto him, Master, what shall we do? Andhe said unto them, [collect]

than that which is[commanded] you . And the

soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, Andwhat shall we do? And he said unto them, Do_____ [intimidate or extort from] to

any falsely; and be your_____." John the Baptist preachedGod's way of life-the way of "give"-to thepeople. He showed that God's way of living issummarized by His Ten Commandments. Inthe examples just quoted, he told the peoplethey should not kill, steal, or lie (the Sixth,Eighth and Ninth Commandments).

John also taught about the soon-comingGovernment of God. Notice it in Matthew3:1-2: " In those days came theBaptist, in the wilderness ofJudea, and saying, ye: for the______________ IS _

"Since God's Government was going to be

reestablished on this earth, Jesus came thisfirst time in order to qualify to replace Satan asthis earth's ruler. Then after He had qualifiedto replace Satan as ruler on earth, He wouldneed competent, loyal persons to help Him rulewhen He returned to earth the secondtime-persons He could teach and train now tobecome His future assistants.

John preached the message of repentance forthe remission of sins. Some began to changethe way they had been living. Christ then calledthem, worked with them during their lifetime, and He will make them assistant rulers in Hissoon-coming Kingdom. This group of future

rulers are members of God 's Churchregardless of whether they are presently alive,or dead in their graves awaiting the resurrection.

The angel Gabriel said that John would"turn the hearts of the fathers to the children"(Luke 1:17). Marriage and family relationswas a subject that John undoubtedly emphasized heavily. Mark records that John theBaptist had told King Herod (Antipas) that hewas sinning by living with his half-brotherPhilip's wife. Herod's wife and Philip wereboth still alive (Mark 6:18). John did not justsuggest to Herod and Herodias that it was nota good thing to do. Rather, he boldly statedthat it was against God's law! His boldness inproclaiming God's way led to his imprisonmentand eventual death.

Throughout his ministry John the Baptistemphasized that he was only preparing the wayfor One to come; One much greater than he.Notice this in Mark 1:7-8 : "And Johnpreached, saying, There cometh

By emphasizing strong marriages and close familyrelationships, God's Church is preparing us to

become a part of God 's family.

PREPARING FOR THE SECOND COMING

Does John the Baptist's work seem familiarto you? It should! In many ways it is similar tothe Work God's Church is doing today. Just asGod prepared the way for Christ's first comingby sending John the Baptist, so He is preparingthe way for Christ's second coming through thepreaching of Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong andthe Work of the Worldwide Church of God.

The third chapter of the book of Malachispeaks of this preparation before Christ'ssecond coming. Notice verses 1 and 2: "Behold,I will send my , and he shall_____ the before me: and theLord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to histemple [the Church-see I Corinthians 3:16],even the messenger [Christ] of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the___ of his ? and who shallstand when he appeareth? for he is like arefiner's fire, and like fullers' soap."

John the Baptist was only a type of thefulfillment of this prophecy. The main fulfillment occurs shortly before Christ's secondcoming. We know this because Christ did notjudge those who did not fear Him (verses 3-5)at His first coming. But He will do that at Hissecond coming!

Malachi tells more about this end-timepreparation in chapter 4, verses 5-6: "Behold, Iwill send you the prophet

the coming of the great anddreadful : And___ shall the heart of the

________ the , and

the heart of the children to their fathers, lest Icome and smite the earth with a curse [utterdestruction]." Obviously, God does not meanthe human prophet, Elijah the Tishbite, will dothis. That Elijah died long ago. Rather, as Johnthe Baptist came in the spirit and power ofElijah, so Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong has alsocome in the same spirit and power of Elijah.

Mr. Armstrong, with the support of God'sChurch, is preparing the way for Christ'ssecond coming. He is telling people to repent,to change from the carnal "get" way of life toGod's "give" way of life. He is proclaiming tothe world that God's Government (Kingdom)will soon be reestablished on this earth. He isemphasizing the importance of strong marriages and strong families so that people canreceive the training necessary to fulfill God'spurpose for them, which is to become a part ofHis Family. Through God's Church, Hispeople are receiving the instruction andtraining necessary to assist Christ in administering God's Government on earth when Hereturns. Mr. Armstrong, backed by theChurch, is clearly preparing the way for theglorified Christ, just as John the Baptist did forJesus and His message.

But what does the preparation for Christ'sreturn have to do with you? Plenty! You have abasic knowledge of some very important things. You know about the weekly Sabbath and theHoly Days. You probably realize that Christwill return to this earth soon; that He will setup God's Kingdom (Government) on thisearth; that your parents talk of somedaybecoming immortal sons of God-a part ofGod's Family-ruling as kings with Christ.

This knowledge is a tremendous advantageGod gives you over all other young people onthe face of this earth! You have this knowledgebecause either one or both of your parents aremembers of God's Church. You are not cut offfrom God as the children in the world. In a fewyears, God will also call you to conversion tobegin training you intensively for rulership

In the meantime, you can also have a part inhelping to prepare the way for Christ's returnto rule the earth. Support God's Apostle.Support God's Church and attend services withyour parents. And do take an active part in theactivities provided for the youth in God'sChurch!

JESUS BAPTIZED BY JOHN

During John the Baptist's ministry andshortly before the beginning of Christ'sministry, Jesus came to John near the JordanRiver to be baptized by him. John tried toprevent it, saying, "Why do You want to bebaptized by me when I am the one who needsto be baptized by You?"

Jesus' reply is found in Matthew 3:15:"Suffer [permit] it to be so now: for thus itbecometh us [it is proper or right for us] to

all ." Johnknew that Christ had not sinned and thereforedid not need to be baptized. But Christ insistedon baptism because He knew that it was properfor Him to do so to perform fully ("fulfill") allthat is right in God's sight to do. Therefore hewas baptized as an example for all who wouldbecome Christians. By doing so, Christ alsoaffirmed His commitment to God the Fatherthat He would accomplish His purpose.

John baptized Jesus by totally immersingHim in the waters of the river Jordan. Thenafter Jesus was baptized, God gave a specialsign to show that He was indeed the Son ofGod. The Holy Spirit of God descended like adove upon Jesus Christ and a voice came out ofheaven saying, "This is my beloved Son, inwhom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17).

John the Baptist's reaction to this ismentioned in the Gospel of John. Notice verses32-34 of chapter 1: "And John [the Baptist]

GREATEST BATTLE IN HISTORY

Jesus Christ came to this earth for manyreasons. Many of you realize that He came todie for us-to pay the penalty of death our sinshave brought upon us. Perhaps you also knowthat He came to start His Church for thetraining of His future assistant rulers. But doyou understand that Christ came to qu alify torepl ace Satan as the ruler of this world ?

After His baptism, Jesus was led by theHoly Spirit into the Judean wilderness whereGod intended that He should be tried andtested. Jesus Christ had to prove th at He wouldrule according to the law of God-that Hewould never reject God's government as Satanhad. So, while God did not tempt Jesus, He didallow Christ to enter into the greatest spiritualbattle of all time-a battle with Satan forworld rulership.

Satan welcomed the opportunity to temptJesus Christ to disobey God. He was confidentthat he could overthrow the human Jesus-justas he had previously overthrown Adam andEve. He would show God the impossibility ofHis plan to make sons of God out of humanbeings. Satan was determined to destroy God'splan.

Jesus did not underestimate the power of Hisopponent! He knew that as a human being Hewas no match for Satan. He knew that thest rength and power to overcome Satan mustcome from God through His Holy Spirit, sinceonly God had more power th an Satan. So prior

Jesus Christ won the greatest battle in history herein the Judean wilderness!

to th at spiritual battle, Jesus fasted for fortydays and nights-not eating or drinkinganything-in order to be so close to God thatHe could be certain of receiving the spiritualpower and strength He needed to defeatSatan.

The stakes were the highest possible! EitherChrist through God's power qualified toreplace Satan as world ruler by overcominghim , or else Satan would fore ver thwart God'splan to bring many sons into the God Familyby defeating Christ who was sent to be thesavior of mankind.

After Christ had fasted forty days andnights, Satan tempted Him-working on Himto reject God and His way. Satan decided tomount his greatest attack on Christ and winthis battle for world rulership once and forall!

The first phase of Satan's attack during thisbattle for rulership over the entire earth ismentioned in Matthew 4:1-11, beginning withverse 3: "And when the tempter came to him ,he said, If thou be the Son of God, commandthat these stones be made bread." Satanchallenged the fact that Christ was the Son of

7

Page 8: PREPARING THE WAY - Herbert W. Armstrong · God prepared the way for Christ'sfirst coming by sending John the Baptist, so He is preparing the way for Christ'ssecond coming through

God ("if thou be the Son of God"). Satansubtly tried to get Christ to doubt it justenough to want to prove that He was in factGod's Son. If Satan could get Jesus to obeyhim in anything, he knew Christ would bedisqualified to replace him as earth's ruler. Byobedience to any of Satan's commands orsuggestions, Jesus would have proven Himselfsubject to Satan.

Notice also how Satan used Christ's physicalcondition to try to overthrow Him. Christ wasobviously extremely hungry and thirsty afterfasting forty days and nights. In His weakenedphysical condition the desire for food and drinkmust have been enormous! Satan tried to getChrist's mind onto physical things in order tooverthrow Him. Satan may have remindedJesus that God had not commanded Him tofast, so it was not disobeying God to stop thefast when He so chose. The decision wasChrist's, Satan might have added. The decisionwas truly Christ's, but the suggestion wasdefinitely Satan's! Christ's mind was not onphysical things, however. His fasting hadfocused His mind on the spiritual things ofGod!

Matthew 4:4 contains Jesus' answer toSatan: "But He answered and said, It iswritten, shall not by breadalone, but _

that proceedeth out of the mouth___." Jesus Christ explained that life doesnot consist of just physical things, but also ofthe spiritual things of God-what God saysand wants us to do. And He showed by Hisstatement that the spiritual things, obeyingGod's Word, were the most important toHim.

Satan then decided to take Jesus toJerusalem and set Him on a pinnacle (highpoint) of the Temple. "If thou be the Son ofGod," Satan again said, "cast thyself down: forit is written, he shall give his angels chargeconcerning thee: and in their hands they shallbear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thyfoot against a stone" (Matthew 4:5-6). Satan

8

was quoting from Psalm 91 in which Goddescribes what He will do for those who obeyand trust in Him. Satan quoted the scripturecorrectly, but he misapplied it.

Satan again challenged Christ with "if youare the Son of God" in order to get Jesus to acton emotion to prove to Satan that He reallywas God's Son. By so doing He would haveobeyed Satan-thus losing the opportunity toreplace Satan as world ruler. But He didn't losethis battle. He won it!

During this temptation, Satan may have alsomentioned to Jesus that since His life had sucha spiritual direction toward God, surely Psalm91 applied to Him more than any other human. And didn't He, Christ, want to be sure Godwould keep this promise to Him before Heallowed Himself to be crucified? After all, howsure could He be that God was going to keepHis promise and resurrect Him after Hiscrucifixion if God could not or would not keepthis promise?

Satan may have reminded Jesus that He washuman and could not by Himself defeat Satan. How sure was He that God was present to helpHim? Was He afraid to jump because He justmight find out God wasn't there to help Him?Satan undoubtedly had much more to say thanthe one sentence recorded in the Bible in tryingto get Christ to obey him.

After Satan had finished talking, Christresponded, "It is written, Thou shalt ______ the Lord thy "(Matthew4:7). Jesus Christ realized Satan was trying toget Him to act rashly and emotionally. Herecognized Satan's attempts to put doubt inHis mind about God and His promises and Hisown relationship with the Father. Jesusunderstood that He should not tempt God bydoing some act with the purpose of getting Godto react in a specific way-just to see if Godwould.

Unsuccessful with the first two temptations,Satan tried a third one. He took Christ to thetop of a high mountain and showed Him all thekingdoms of the world and their glory

Page 9: PREPARING THE WAY - Herbert W. Armstrong · God prepared the way for Christ'sfirst coming by sending John the Baptist, so He is preparing the way for Christ'ssecond coming through

(magnificence). "All these things will I giveYou," Satan offered, "if You will fall downand worship me."

Satan may have added that Jesus would onlyhave to worship him this one time. "You couldbe king over all the earth now, instead ofhaving to wait 2,000 years," Satan might havesaid. "And wouldn't it be much easier to getrulership (which the Father wants you to have, anyway) by doing it my way than to do it God'sway, which means you are going to have to becrucified ?"

Jesus Christ did not argue about Satan'sclaim to the kingdoms of this world. II Corinthians 4:4 states that Satan is the god of thisworld. The kingdoms of this world were his togive. But notice Christ's reply to Satan's offerin Matthew 4:10: "Get thee hence, Satan: for itis written, Thou shalt the Lordthy , and shaltthou "

The battle ended! Jesus Christ was the victorand He had qualified to replace Satan as rulerof the earth!

Satan now left Jesus alone. Immediately,God's angels came to serve Him food anddrink. But as Luke adds, Satan departed onlyfor a while (Luke 4:13). Satan doesn't give up

easily. He is determined, even yet, to thwartGod's plan-if he can!

CHRIST PREPARES A TEAM

After Christ qualified to replace Satan asworld ruler, He began to choose a team ofpeople whom He would train to help Him rulein the future. This team began with the twelvedisciples who became apostles. Christ expandedthat group to include many others. All of thesecompose the whole Church of God to this veryday.

A disciple is a student or learner. The twelvedisciples followed Jesus Christ and learnedGod's way from His teaching and from theirexperiences with Him. Jesus taught them God'sway of life by both His words and His example. He wanted them to learn to rule and governwith Him in God's Kingdom. He also told themto teach all nations what He had taught them(Matthew 28:19-20).

Among the first disciples Christ called wereAndrew and his brother, Simon. Andrew was adisciple of John the Baptist. One day he and acompanion were with John when Jesus walkedby them. "Behold the Lamb of God!" said Johnthe Baptist (John 1:36). Andrew and hiscompanion knew that John had always said he

was preparing the way for the Christ-thepromised Messiah. "This must be Jesus ofNazareth, the Messiah," Andrew may havemused to himself.

Andrew and his friend immediately left Johnand followed Christ. Realizing someone wasfollowing Him, Jesus turned and asked whatthey were looking for. They asked Him whereHe lived, because they wanted to talk toHim.

Christ invited Andrew and the other discipleof John to His home. This was about fouro'clock in the afternoon. Jesus explained manythings to them during the remainder of theday.

Thrilled about finding the Messiah, Andrewleft to find his brother, Simon. Excitedly hetold him, "We have found the Messiah!"Andrew began to tell him about his conversation with Jesus that afternoon and urgedSimon to go with him to Christ's house tosee for himself that Jesus was indeed theChrist!

Together they left and soon arrived at Jesus'house. Notice what Jesus said to Simon Peter:"And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art

the son of Jona: thou shalt_______________, which is

by interpretation, A [Peter;Petros]" (John 1:42). When He called Simonto be a disciple, Jesus gave him the title ofPeter. The importance of this will be discussed in detail in a later lesson. Just realizefor now that it involves Simon being the chiefapostle.

The next day Jesus called Philip to be Hisdisciple. Philip was from the same city asAndrew and Simon Peter and may havealready known them.

Philip realized that Jesus of Nazareth mustbe the Messiah because the description writtenin the Law and Prophets (books of the OldTestament) fit Jesus perfectly. Philip quicklyfound his friend Nathanael to tell him thenews. "We have found him," he excitedlybegan, "of whom Moses in the law, and the

10

prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the sonof Joseph" (John 1:45).

Now Nathanael (also called Bartholomew)was cautious about Philip's claim. "Where inthe Scriptures does it say that any prophet willcome from Nazareth-much less the Messiah?" he questioned. "The Christ is to be bornin Bethlehem according to the Scriptures," hemay have added.

Philip invited him to come and see Jesus forhimself. Philip knew Nathanael would beconvinced if he talked with Christ.

As they approached Jesus, He said ofNathanael, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, In

whom is no guile [deceit]!" (John 1:47.)"How do You know me?" asked Nathanael,

quite surprised.Jesus replied, "Before Philip called you,

when you were under the fig tree, I saw you!""How could He have possibly known where I

was?" Nathanael wondered. "God must haverevealed it to Him!"

"Rabbi," Nathanael said, "You are the Sonof God; You are the King of Israel!"

"Do you believe just because I told you thatI saw you under the fig tree?" Christ asked."You will see much greater things than that,Nathanael! You will see heaven open and theangels of God ascending and descending uponthe Son of Man!"

Nathanael became the fifth disciple. These fivewere the first of the disciples Jesus would call.

CHRIST'S FIRST MIRACLE

On the following day, Jesus, His mother andthe disciples were invited to a wedding in Canaof Galilee (John 2: 1-11). It was a largecelebration with much food and wine, but theservants ran out of wine to serve to the guests.Mary, Jesus' mother, told Him about theproblem, hoping He would help.

"Why do you want me to help?" Jesusasked. "It is not the right time for me to dosomething that will draw a lot of attention."

Mary did not know what Jesus was going todo, but she was confident that He would help.

Page 11: PREPARING THE WAY - Herbert W. Armstrong · God prepared the way for Christ'sfirst coming by sending John the Baptist, so He is preparing the way for Christ'ssecond coming through

"Whatever He tells you to do, do it," she toldthe servants.

Christ ordered six waterpots, each holdingabout twenty gallons, to be filled with water. Then He told the servants to begin filling theguests' cups! What was water moments beforehad now become wine! Most people at thewedding feast had no idea where the wine hadcome from. (Only the servants and disciples ofJesus knew.) The host of the feast evencommented to the bridegroom that this winewas far better than that served at the beginningof the feast!

This was the beginning of the miraclesChrist performed. It also showed God's greatpower and glory. It also helped to deepen andstrengthen the disciples' belief that Jesus wasthe Christ.

In this lesson you have seen how God usedJohn the Baptist to prepare the way forChrist's first coming and how God is preparingthe way for Christ's second coming throughMr. Herbert W. Armstrong and the Worldwide Church of God.

You have seen how Jesus qualified to replaceSatan as world ruler and how He then began aprogram to train future assistant rulers bycalling His disciples.

In the next lesson you will learn aboutChrist's early ministry-what He taught, where He went, what He did-and what it allhas to do with you! Don't miss it!
