FOR SAFE BATTERY USE: Keep the batteries out of children’s reach.

Any battery may leak battery acid if mixed with a different battery type, if inserted incorrectly (put in backwards) or if all batteries are not replaced or recharged at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries.

Any battery may leak battery acid or explode if disposed of in fire or an attempt is made to charge a battery not intended to be recharged. Never recharge a cell of one type in a recharger made for a cell of another type.

Please Read to Enjoy Our Product• Please have patience. This product requires a little time but the results are wonderful. You should start using it at the begining of your third trimester.• What you will hear through our Prenatal Heart Listener® will be the natural sounds of your baby. Your doctor uses Doppler ultrasound equipment which produces artificial noise by turning movement into sound. Our Prenatal Heart Listener® amplifies the actual sounds of your baby.• The best time to listen is 3 to 4 hours after eating and when you are relaxed. • The Prenatal Heart Listener® must be used in a very quiet room.• Placing the volume control at a low to moderate level will produce the best results and avoid static.• You might not hear your baby's sounds immediately so don't be disapointed. The more you use the Prenatal Heart Listener®, the better you will become at finding the sounds. Your baby's position will also greatly affect your success. The best position is with your baby's back to your belly button. Your success will also depend on how relaxed you are. You may have to try several times before you will hear your baby's sounds, particularly the heartbeat. • Your baby's heartbeat does not sound like your own. A fetal heart beats from 120-180 times per minute. It will sound like a soft, rapidly beating drum.• You will also hear kick, hiccups, and nutrients passing through the placenta. Kicks sound like uneven thumps, hiccups like two rapid drum beats, and the nutrients like a whooshing sound.

• Our Prenatal Heart Listener® does not use any AC current, ultrasound, or radio waves.

IntroductionThank you for purchasing our Graco® Prenatal Heart Listener®. Please read the following material carefully to maximize your enjoyment of this product.It is important to understand that many factors affect what you will hear with your Prenatal Heart Listener®. The position of your baby, your baby’s weight, your weight, your stage of pregnancy, and where you place the Prenatal Heart Listener® will all affect what you will hear.For example, when listening for the fetal heartbeat, the sound will be loudest in the third trimester and if your baby is positioned with her back to your belly button. Your baby may naturally shift position, thereby creating the situation where you will hear your baby one moment but not the next. However, once you’ve passed the second trimester, your baby will be growing very rapidly and you will hear the heartbeat and all the other sounds on a much more regular basis.Don’t worry! It’s quite normal that there will be times you will not be able to hear your baby’s sounds due to your baby’s position or stage of development. This is especially true of the heartbeat which is highly dependent on your baby’s position.

Identifying the Fetal Sounds You Will HearYou will hear kicks, hiccups, nutrients passing through the placenta, and, of course, the heartbeat. Each one is distinctive and being able to identify them will significantly enhance your experience.The best way to describe each sound is as follows: Heartbeat: A very soft rapidly beating drum Kicks: A series of uneven thumps Hiccups: Two rapid, soft drumbeats Nutrients: A whooshing sound

A fetal heart beats from 120 to 180 times a minute while the heart of a pregnant woman beats approximately 100 times a minute. Knowing this should help prevent you from confusing your own heartbeat with that of your baby’s.

When You Will Hear These SoundsThe fetal heartbeat, kicks and hiccups may be heard from the beginning of your third trimester. You will need to listen very carefully for your baby’s heartbeat as it may be extremely difficult to hear it over the beating of your own heart. The sound of your own bowels may also interfere with your ability to hear the heartbeat. While the Prenatal Heart Listener® is specially designed to tune out these sounds, they can still get in the way. This is why the best time to listen is 3 to 4 hours after a meal and when you are relaxed and have a slower heartbeat.

Remember, as your baby grows and gets stronger, so do the sounds she creates. You will also become more familiar with the sounds so they will be easier to identify.

Prenatal Heart Listener® vs. DopplerYou will notice that the sounds you hear through the Prenatal Heart Listener® are different from those you hear at your doctor's office. This is because your doctor probably uses Doppler ultrasound equipment which creates electronic noise based on movement. The Prenatal Heart Listener®, however, is designed to amplify the sounds naturally by using the absolutely safe Bell stethoscope method of amplification. Again, the heartbeat heard through the Prenatal Heart Listener® sounds more like the soft, rapidbeating of a drum, while the Doppler sound is more of a gushing noise. Please keep in mind that it will take a little practice to pick up this faint sound so listen very carefully.

Record Your Baby’s Sounds & Your Own HeartbeatWith our recording cable and your own recorder you can record your baby’s sounds. We also encourage you to record your own heartbeat prior to your baby being born. You will then be able to play it back to your newborn after birth which may have a calming and soothing effect.

Insert the headset plug into either jack on the unit and put the headset on.

Remove the battery cover and install a new 9-volt (6LR61) battery (not included). We recommend using a new battery as an old one will severely interfere with the performance of your Prenatal Heart Listener®. Be sure to match positive (+) to positive (+) and negative (-) to negative (-).

Replace the battery cover.

Turn the Prenatal Heart Listener® on by turning the Power/Volumecontrol wheel to the right until you hear a click. The red power indicatoron the front will light up to indicate the unit is in the ON position.

Hold the listening cone to your stomach or lower back. Use the Prenatal Heart Listener® on bare skin in a quiet room.

Be sure the foam cover is in place on the listening cone.

Adjust the volume to optimize the listening level and amplification.Begin with a low to moderate level to avoid static.

Before moving the Prenatal HeartListener®, turn the volume level down to the lowest position to avoid the sound of the cone moving against your skin

Start by placing the listening cone two inches below and several inches to the right of your belly button. Gently move the unit one inch at a time to different places until you find the best position for listening to your baby’s sounds.

When you are finished, turn the Power/Volume control wheel all the way to the left until you hear a click to turn the Prenatal Heart Listener® off. The red power indicator light will turn off.

4 Adjust the recording level on your recorder if necessary.

Hold the Prenatal Heart Listener® very still and begin recording. Remember, the sound of your heartbeat can have a very calming and soothing effect on your baby. You may want to record your own heartbeat before your baby is born. You will then be able to play back your recorded heartbeat to your baby after birth. We recommend a 30-minute recording.

NOTE: You will need to reduce the volume when you record your own heartbeat since it is much louder than that of your unborn baby’s.

Plug the straight end into the microphone jack on your computer. This is indicated by a picture of a microphone near the jack or the jack is color coded pink on the back of your computer.

Plug the L-shaped end of the recording cable into either jack on thePrenatal Heart Listener®.

If a sound recorder is available on your computer, you can use it to record your baby’s sounds.

Refer to your computer’s User manual for detailed instructions on accessing and using your sound recording software.

Tips for Using the Prenatal Heart Listener®• The Prenatal Heart Listener® has powerful amplification capabilitiesrequired to pick up the quiet sounds produced by your baby. To protect your ears and prevent feedback (squealing sounds), do not turn on the unit unless the listening cone is pressed against your body.• There are many different sounds being produced by your baby and yourbody. Increasing the volume also increases these sounds. Keeping the volume at a moderate level usually produces the best results; therefore, adjust the volume carefully.• Your baby's heartbeat is a very low volume sound and is very difficult to detect until the third trimester. Patience and very careful listening are required to locate the best position to hear the heartbeat. It is perfectly normal to hear it on some days and not others due to your baby's position and movements. It is also normal that you will hear it one moment and not the next. Don't worry! It is very natural for your baby to shift her position.

1. You can not hear your unborn baby with your Prenatal Heart Listener®.a. It may be too early in your pregnancy to hear your baby. Wait untilyou are in your third trimester when the fetal heartbeat starts becoming louder.

b. It is quite normal not to hear your baby due to her position. Try again later. The best time to listen is 3 to 4 hours after a meal and when you are relaxed. You may also want to try placing the Prenatal Heart Listener® against your lower back as this may help minimize interference from your own body’s sounds.

c. Unit is not on. Turn unit on by turning the Power/Volume controlwheel to the right until you hear a click and the red power indicatorlights up.

d. Volume control is turned down. Increase the volume by turning thePower/Volume control wheel to the right.

e. The headset is not connected to the monitor. Make sure the headset is securely plugged into either jack on the monitor.

2. There is feedback (squealing noises) when you use your PrenatalHeart Listener®.a. The volume is too high. Turn the volume down by turning the wheelto the left.

b. Lower the volume before moving the Prenatal Heart Listener® against your skin.

3. You cannot record from your Prenatal Heart Listener®.a. The recording cable is not plugged in correctly. Make sure the L- shaped end of the recording cable is securely plugged into either jack on the Prenatal Heart Listener® and the straight end into the line input of your recorder.

b. The recorder is not working. Make sure the recorder works. Replacebatteries if necessary.

c. The volume control is turned down on your recorder. Increase the volume.

4. There is too much background noise and it makes a scratching sound when you move it. Turn the volume down BEFORE you move the Prenatal HeartListener® from one spot to the next and don’t turn it up again until you are no longer moving it against your stomach.

f. Battery is low. Red power indicator light will dim. Insert a new 9-volt (6LR61) alkaline battery.

g. Battery is not inserted properly. Open the battery compartment and check to see that positive (+) is matched with positive (+) and negative (-) is matched with negative (-).

h. Foam cover is not in place on the listening cone. Make sure thefoam cover is on the listening cone.

i. There is foreign matter in the listening cone. Remove the foamcover and make sure there is nothing in the listening cone.

Care and Maintenance• To clean your Prenatal Heart Listener®, wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not submerge in water or any other liquid.• Store in a cool dry place.• Keep out of the reach of children when not in use.• Do not disassemble the Prenatal Heart Listener®.• Only use a 9-volt (6LR61) alkaline battery.• During long periods of non-use, remove battery from the compartment.• Please dispose of batteries properly and safely. • Do not use or place open flames such as lighted candles on or near the unit. • The Prenatal Heart Listener® should be used in normal room temperature. Do not use in extreme heat or cold.

Es importante entender que muchos factores afectan lo que escuchará con su Prenatal Heart Listener®. La posición de su bebé, el peso de su bebé, su peso, la etapa del embarazo y dónde pone el Prenatal Heart Listener® todos afectarán lo que escuchará.

Enchufe el auricular en uno de los enchufes de la unidad y póngaselo.

Saque la tapa de la pila e instale una pila nueva de 9 voltios (6LR61). (no se incluye). Le recomendamos que use una pila nueva ya que una vieja podría interferir con el rendimiento de su Prenatal Heart Listener®. Asegúrese de poner el símbolo positivo (+) con el positivo (+) y el negativo (-) con el negativo (-).

Encienda el Prenatal Heart Listener® girando la perilla de control de encendido/volumen (power/volume) hacia la derecha hasta que escuche un sonido. El indicador de encendido rojo del frente se iluminará para indicar que la unidad está en la posición ENCENDIDA (ON).

Ponga el cono para escuchar sobre su estómago o parte baja de la espalda. Use el Prenatal Heart Listener® sobre la piel desnuda en una sala con mucho silencio.

Asegúrese de que la tapa de espuma esté en su lugar en el cono para escuchar.

Antes de mover el Prenatal Heart Listener®, ponga el volumen lo más bajo posible para evitar el sonido del cono que se mueve sobre su piel.

Sostenga el Prenatal Heart Listener® sin que se mueva y comience a grabar. Recuerde, el sonido de los latidos de sucorazón puede tener un efecto tranquilizador y calmar a su bebé. Le convendría grabar su propio latido antes de que nazca el bebé. Entonces podrá reproducir el latido de su corazón grabado a su bebé después del nacimiento. Recomendamos una grabación de 30 minutos.

NOTA:Usted necesitará reducir el volumen cuando graba su propio latido del corazón ya que es mucho más fuerte que el de su bebé que no ha nacido.

Ajuste el nivel de grabación del grabador si fuera necesario.

Enchufe el extremo derecho al enchufe del micrófono de su computadora. La imagen de un micrófono cerca del enchufe lo indica o el enchufe tiene color rosado en la parte trasera de su computadora.

Sugerencias para el uso del Prenatal Heart Listener®• El Prenatal Heart Listener® incluye un poderoso amplificador que es necesario para escuchar los sonidos suaves que produce su bebé. Para proteger sus oídos y prevenir la realimentación (chillidos), no encienda la unidad a menos que el cono del auricular esté contra su cuerpo.• Hay muchos sonidos diferentes que produce su bebé y su cuerpo. Aumentar el volumen también aumenta estos sonidos. Mantener el volumen a un nivel moderado generalmente produce los mejores resultados; por lo tanto, ajuste el volumen cuidadosamente.• El latido del corazón de su bebé es un sonido con muy bajo volumen y es difícil de detectar hasta el tercer trimestre. Paciencia y escuchar con mucha atención son necesarios para encontrar la mejor posición para escuchar el latido del corazón. Es perfectamente normal escucharlo algunos días y no en otros debido a la posición y los movimientos de su bebé. También es normal que lo escuche en un momento y no en el siguiente. ¡No se preocupe! Es muy natural que su bebé cambie su posición.

1. No puede escuchar al bebé que no ha nacido con su Prenatal Heart Listener®.a. Podría ser demasiado temprano en su embarazo para escuchar a su bebé. Espere hasta llegar al tercer trimestre cuando el latido del corazón del bebé que no ha nacido sea más fuerte.

b. Es muy normal no escuchar a su bebé debido a su posición. Pruebe de nuevo más tarde. El mejor momento para escuchar es 3 a 4 horas después de comer y cuando está relajada. También le convendría tratar de poner el Prenatal Heart Listener® contra la parte inferior de la espalda ya que podría ayudar a minimizar la interferencia con los propios sonidos de su cuerpo.

c. La unidad no está encendida. Encienda la unidad girando la perilla de control de encendido/volumen hacia la derecha hasta que escuche un sonido y se encienda la luz roja indicadora.

d. El control del volumen está demasiado bajo. Aumente el volumen girando la perilla de control del encendido/volumen hacia la derecha.

2. Hay realimentación (chillidos) cuando usa el Prenatal Heart Listener®.a. El volumen es demasiado alto. Baje el volumen girando la perilla hacia la izquierda.

b. Baje el volumen antes de mover el Prenatal Heart Listener® contra su piel.

3. No puede grabar desde su Prenatal Heart Listener®.a. El cable de grabación no está enchufado correctamente. Asegúrese de que el extremo con forma de L del cable de grabación está correctamente enchufado en uno de los enchufes del Prenatal Heart Listener® y que el extremo recto en la entrada de la línea de su grabador.

b. El grabador no funciona. Asegúrese de que el grabador funciona. Cambie las pilas si fuera necesario.

c. El control del volumen está demasiado bajo en el grabador. Suba el volumen

f. La pila está descargada. La luz roja indicadora perderá su intensidad. Inserte una nueva pila alcalina de 9 voltios.

g. La pila no está colocada correctamente. Abra el compartimiento de la pila y verifique para estar seguro que el símbolo positivo (+) está conectado al positivo (+) y el negativo (-) al negativo (-).

h. La tapa de espuma no está en su lugar en el cono del auricular. Asegúrese de que la tapa de espuma esté en el cono del auricular.
