Air Pollution and Lung Cancer By Premiere Environmental November 12, 2013 According to a heartbreaking articlepublished today in The Times of India, 20% of terminal lung cancer in Hyderabad, India is caused by high levels of air pollution. The air in the city is dangerously saturated with ozone and carcinogenic agent benzene, and the levels of these compounds spike fatally in the summer months. Experts say the main sources of the pollution are diesel smoke from autorickshaws, power generation, industrial or agricultural emissions, and residential heat and cooking. Residents believe they are safe from the fumes in their homes and in their cars, but officials dispute this. “Air pollution can easily invade indoor spaces,” says Dr. Saikrishna Yendamuri, Head of Thoracic Surgery at the Citizen’s Hospital. “And once it does, without proper ventilation and cleaning systems, it’s a threat no matter where you go.” The population is beginning to see that threat realized–every year, 80,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in India, and of those, 90% end in death. While the pollution may not be as dangerous in the US and other countries, the tragic circumstances in India serve as a warning and a wake up call for the rest of the world, where air pollution is always on the rise. Premiere Environmental is committed to doing all it can for families all around the world looking to protect themselves, who need a quality air cleaning product for an affordable price.
