Burnside started the game strong opening the score line early within the first half. However, the Zuluettes persistent defence and attack saw them score two goals soon after going into the half time break with a one goal lead 2-1. Both teams came out very determined to score after the half time whistle. Burnside showed this determination with plenty of attacking circle penetrations, but Zuluette goal keeper Sam Hogan was on fire making some very impressive saves (even utilising her helmet!!) keeping Burnside out in the second half. It was only the very impressive & persistent North East warriors that were able to slot a couple into the back of the net finishing the game with a 4-1 defeat over the Bulldogs. Alison Stock netting her second double in as many weeks with Leesa McDonald and Jess Campbell also opening their accounts for the year with one each. Great work ladies!

The latest from our PL Zuluettes.

The rundown from the Premier League Men

It was a game of two halves as last year's grand finalists fought for ladder position on Wednesday evening. After a see-sawing 3-3 epic battle earlier in the season, it was the Tigers who asserted their dominance for the first 35mins, raiding the Zulu circle time and time again. Glynn Tamlin and Al Oli-ver found time, space and soon thereafter ball to cause headaches for a Zulu defence that was miss-ing evergreen Ian Wishart through injury. Eventually, an uncharacteristic defensive lapse from Na-than Jennings wrong-footed keeper Dylan Evans giving Matthew Morton the easiest of tap-ins and the Tigers a deserved lead at half-time. It was a different Zulu outfit in the second stanza though, as their midfield of Chris Wells and Brady O'Shea began to click. An early foray forward by Brodie Cameron beat former team mate Michael Wells on the near post to draw the two teams level. With ten minutes to play, Chris Wells worked the baseline and after a long advantage from Levi Stevens, slipped a ball past his younger brother to keep his season tally ticking over. Wil Telfer then showed why he remains a prodigious talent with a length of the field individual effort to put the game beyond doubt before Chris Toonen became the benefactor of some strong midfield play to ice the match at 4-1. In the end, an overly flattering re-sult for the men from North East with the return bout at Seacliff during the last round being one to look forward to by both sides. "It was a cracker of a game!" NORTH EAST defeated SEACLIFF 4-1

GET TO KNOW OUR JUNIOR COACHES.

Full name: Matthew Toonen

Nickname: I've had a few nicknames over the years it started with B2,

now I get Toonenenenen or just Matty.

Time at NEHC: I’ve been at NEHC since it started in 1994.

What teams do you coach? I coach 2 teams, I have been coaching U9's for 4yrs and the M2 Men for 2 years.

What is your role at NEHC? As well as coaching I have taken on the roll of Men’s Coordinator this year.

What team do you play in and what is your playing history: I first started playing hockey when I was 8yrs old. My primary school in Queensland had a senior team, I was too young but they needed a GK. I begged my parents to let me play. I played as a GK until U14's when I was then put out on the field. I was involved in one of the clubs first premierships in 1995 in U16's. From 1998 through to 2011 I played mostly M1M with the occasional PL game. I've been very fortunate of late to play in 4 grand finals in 5 years. Winning 3, in 09, 11 & 13. I've been a playing coach in the M2M for two years. Win-ning the premiership in my first year coaching seniors (2013).

What is your favourite position on the field and why? I would have to say my favourite position on

the field is GK. Trying to save shots being hit as hard as possible is good fun! I have played mostly at

Left Half during my senior years. I like playing there because you can be defending as well as attack-

ing. I love marking the wingers and stopping them from getting possessions.

What is your favourite sport besides hockey? Besides hockey I love most forms of motorsports, es-pecially the two wheeled variety!

What is your job? I am a carpenter at Toonen Carpentry & Constructions which is my own business.

What are some other interesting facts/hobbies/info about yourself? I have been married to my

wife Danielle for 12yrs and we have 3 boys. Jackson 10 plays U11, Lucas 8 plays U9 and Cooper 6

who doesn't want to play yet. When not at work or at hockey I enjoy keeping active with my family

at the BMX track or play ground.

Why do you like North East Hockey Club ? I have been at NEHC for more than half my life, I have great friends still from when I was a junior. The club is very welcoming to new members and are con-stantly striving to keep it really family friendly. To come down to the club on PL game days and see lots of families and friends around is so great.

Full name: Emma Axford

Nickname: Ax

Time at NEHC: I’ve been playing since about

2007.

What teams do you coach? I am currently as-

sistant coaching Minkey and Under 18s.

What is your role at NEHC? I am a player,

coach, manager and volunteer.

What team do you play in and what is your

playing history: At the moment I play Metro 1

Women and sometimes get games in Premier

League.

What is your favourite position on the field and why? Probably right half,

it is where I’m most comfortable but I don’t mind where I play.

What is your favourite sport besides hockey: Hockey is my #1 sport but I

also play Netball.

What are you studying? I am currently studying Pharmaceutical Science at

UniSA.

What are some interesting facts/hobbies/info about yourself?

I have 2 sisters and a brother. I got both my parents and sisters into playing

hockey.

Why do you like North East Hockey Club? I like North East because it’s so

family orientated, I love how everyone knows everyone (mostly).

SPOTTED:

Rob Axford with a vacuum! Rob plays M6M and is available for cleaning ;) The whole Axford family play at the club and are always volunteering.

Page 7: Premier League Home Games! - SportsTG · The rundown from the Premier League Men It was a game of two halves as last year's grand finalists fought for ladder position on Wednesday

Full name: Nathan Jennings

Nickname: Nato

Time at NEHC: I have been involved in the North East Hockey Club for 12

years.

What are your roles at NEHC: I am currently the Umpire Coordinator for

the club plus the U15 boys coach.

What team do you play in and what is your

playing history: I started playing hockey at age 5 and have made my way

through the grades and I now play for the Premier League Men’s team and

have been playing in that team for the past 3-4 years. I have also been a

part of numerous under age state teams but as I have got old have started umpiring national cham-

pionships rather than playing.

What is your favourite position on the field and why? My favourite position on the field would have

to be Halfback. As I am a terrible goal shooter it only seemed logical that I become a defender so I’m

not close to our attacking circle. I also enjoy denying strikers the ball and preventing them from scor-

ing goals.

What is your favourite sport besides hockey? Basketball. I am a huge NBA and LeBron James fan.

What are you studying? I’m currently studying Sport and Recreation Management at UniSA in my

2nd year.

What are some interesting facts/hobbies/info about yourself? Having a life away from Hockey is

important to me so spending time with friends and family is top of the list. I enjoy watching the NBA

on tv, playing video games and trying all the Chicken Parmis Adelaide has to offer.

Why do you like North East Hockey Club? North East has been my second home for almost my

whole life and it’s the sense of belonging and family that keeps me coming back year after year. Also

being a part of the most successful hockey club in South Australia is something to be proud to be

involved in.

in the last few months. I would encourage everyone to give umpiring a go

as it helps develop your understanding of the game.
