SONIA NIETO

Biographical Note: Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, College of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Sonia Nieto has devoted her professional life to issues of equity, diversity, and social justice. She has written extensively on multicultural education, teacher education, and the education of students of diverse backgrounds. A Visiting Scholar at several universities in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, and South Africa, she has also presented her work throughout the United States and Europe. She has written eleven books including most recently Why We Teach Now (2015), and Finding Joy in Teaching Students of Diverse Backgrounds: Culturally Responsive and Socially Just Practices in U.S. Schools (2013), as well as a memoir, Brooklyn Dreams: My Life in Public Education (2015). Her books have been translated into Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. In 2015, she was elected to the National Academy of Education, the first Puerto Rican woman to receive this honor. She is the recipient of many other awards for her scholarship and advocacy, including six honorary doctorates. This collection is an important resource for information on Sonia Nieto’s advocacy efforts for increased bilingual, multicultural and teacher education. This collection consists of her various academic presentations and manuscripts. The collection spans from 1950-2016. The documents consist of awards, clippings, correspondence, flyers, manuscripts, photographs, publications, videotapes and writings.
