GreetingsIf you found yourself in the middle of Paris,

how would you say hi to someone?

Page 5: Préliminaire I

GreetingsYou could use the expressions:

Bonjour! (meaning literally « good day »)Salut! (the informal hello)

Page 6: Préliminaire I

You found someone special to say hi to. . . You can add to your greetings different titles.

Bonjour Monsieur (mister)Salut Madame (madam/ mrs)Bonjour Madameoiselle (mrs, but to someone

not yet married)

Page 7: Préliminaire I

So, we’ve gotten through saying hi. . . Their next question may be:

Ça va? (how are you)Comment ça va? (how are you)Comment allez-vous? (how are you)Quoi de neuf? (what’s new)

Page 8: Préliminaire I

In order to answer, you need to use the phraseJe vais. . . .

Ça va

Or just an expression that shows how you are doing.______________________________________________

If you want to say how someone else is doing, use the expression « il va ______ » or « elle va ______ »(he is or she is)

Page 9: Préliminaire I

Let’s put these to useFind a sheet of scrap paper, fold it in to columns.

In the first column, write one way to ask how someone is doing and a greeting.

On the other, list from one to 7.

After and not before the signal, stand up and ask 7 people how they are doing and write (in french) their responses.

CULTURAL NOTELes bises

The French greet one another in many cases by placing one’s cheek next to another person’s cheek and making a kissing sound

Page 18: Préliminaire I

Now that we’ve greeted other people, let’s try to say goodbyeThere are several ways of saying goodbye:

Au revoir (until we see each other again)À bientôt (until next time (soon))À tout à l’heure (if you are going to see the

person in a few hours)À plus tard (if you are going to see the person

later that day)Adieu (if you may never see the person again)Ciao (goodbye)À demain (until tomorrow)

Page 19: Préliminaire I

Turn to the person to your right. Tell them goodbye one way.

Then, turn to the person to your left. Tell them goodbye another way.

Page 20: Préliminaire I

You can now say:HelloAsk how someone is doingSay how you are doingSay goodbye

BUT you haven’t gotten the person’s name yet!!! How rude

(grossier is rude in French, for those who are curious)

Page 21: Préliminaire I

Finding out a person’s nameHow do you find a person’s name in French?

Use: Tu t’appelles comment? (what is your name) Quel est ton nom? (what is your name, very literal) Quel est ton prénom préférée? (what is your

prefered name, its mostly found on applications and official documents)

Comment t’appelles-tu? (what is your name) Comment vous appellez-vous? (what is your

(respect) name)

Page 22: Préliminaire I

Take a clock sheetWhen given the signal, each person needs to

take the clock sheet and find a partner for each number on it.(you will have a one o’clock, two o’clock

partner, etc) This must be done by introducing yourselves to the other members of the class in french and writing one name next to each number.

If you don’t have a partner for a number, go to the front of the room

Page 23: Préliminaire I

HINT- You might want to write this downNumbers from one to twelve in French

Un (uh)Deux (duh)Trois (twa)Quatre (cat ra)Cinq (sank)Six (seece)Sept (set)Huit (wheat)Neuf (nerf)Dix (deece)Onze (oh z)Douze (dooz)
