clAssEsWe offer a variety of childbirth preparation classes that

emphasize birth as a normal, healthy, and uniquely personal

event in the life of a family. From prenatal yoga, babywearing

and everything in between. The Gathering Place unites parents

and enriches their experiences and choices. Our classes are

designed to meet the individual and unique needs of families.

DoUlAsEnsure that you have the kind of support you need - consider

having a doula. The basis of doula care is guidance, which

includes offering information, physical assistance, and

emotional support. Our doulas empower each woman to

have the birth of her choice and to approach motherhood

with confidence.

bREAstFEEDiNgWhatever nursing challenges you may face, we can help with

a variety of issues including positioning, proper latch and

improving milk production. Our lactation clinic offers private

consultations at our offices or in your home.

commUNityWe believe in the strength and connection of community.

Long before we opened, our founders had an idea of

creating a space that was inclusive of all parenting choices.

Our wish is that families experience our center as a

supportive, safe place where they can find the resources they

need throughout the exciting, difficult and vulnerable period

of pregnancy and early parenting.

oUr Space, yoUr gUide.

Our center, The Gathering Place, is a space specifically designed for growing families.

We bring people together during pregnancy, birth and early parenting and provide

tools that empower families by giving them information and confidence. Our programs

are geared towards enriching parents' experiences and choices by providing a wide

array of services and resources all under one roof. Our commitment to families growing

and raising young children extends beyond our center. We believe in the strength

and connection of community and are dedicated to building stronger communities by

fostering more informed, fully engaged parents.

Staying true to being a meeting place for growing families, we have created a guide

that serves as an extension of our space. This directory is a listing of local businesses

who provide mother and baby friendly services to expecting and parenting families. All

companies listed support a family’s right to make informed decisions about pregnancy

and birth options and advocate evidence-based, mother-friendly care. We encourage

you to seek providers who support your personal philosophies. Our directory lists

businesses, providers and people in our community who we believe can aid and

empower families during their time of growth.

your personal pregnancy consultant• A doula is a trained professional who pro-

vides continuous physical, emotional and informational support for families.

• They are on call to answer any questions you have about your pregnancy and birth.

• Will listen and relive all the details of your birth both in the moments right after delivery and in the weeks to follow.

support every step of the way• A doula assists families with preparing

for and carrying out a birthing plan by providing information to help them make informed decisions.

• They are on call for you during your birth month, through your entire labor, birth and first hours of postpartum as well as postpartum follow up.

• In the weeks after the baby is born, the doula is available to talk, answer questions, and to process concerns.

Won’t be the third wheel• A doula does not replace medical person-

nel, such as a midwife or doctor, but supplements their care.

• Doulas can help facilitate positive com-munication between you, your partner and the hospital staff.

• Helps other family or friends support you, and offers them a break without feeling guilty about leaving you alone.

home or hospital, there where you need them • Doulas can aid in a variety of birth set-

tings such as hospital, home or birthing center.

• A Labor and Delivery nurse will be help-ful but they also have administrative tasks, other patients and shift changes.

A doula is there to pay special attention to your needs throughout your birth pro-cess, providing comfort and security.

• A doula is trained to suggest position changes, relaxation methods and comfort measures.

your doula works for you. • A doula works for you, not the hospital and

not your care provider.• Can talk you through your options

every step of the way. She won’t make decisions for you but will help you ask the questions needed to make the best choices for your birth.

• Many families feel overwhelmed or helpless during labor. A doulas presence can help you feel more confident and in control.

happy mom, happy baby, happy doula• Supportive doulas have been shown to

lower cesarean section rate by 21%• Beneficial to babies resulting in shorter

hospital stays, and fewer NICU admissions• Women report feeling empowered dur-

ing birth and indicate greater connected-ness to baby

If you have more questions or would like to hire a doula, The Gathering Place offers information and a pro-gram that can help match you with the doula that is right for you. Call us at 786-953-6417

1. Try to breastfeed within the first hours after birthAccording to the organization Healthy Women, this helps your uterus contract, provides valuable colostrum, and bonding with baby.

2. have a nurse or lactation consultant check how baby latches on while you're still in their careMaternity nurses or a lactation consultant can offer breastfeeding tips, starting with how to position the baby and make sure he or she is latching on correctly.

3. Wait until breastfeeding is well established to introduce baby to a bottle or pacifierThe thrusting motion required to nurse is dif-ferent from that required to suck an artificial nipple. This can be confusing to your baby and cause breastfeeding problems such as sucking and latching difficulty, sore nipples, and poor milk supply. For the best start, de-lay bottle feeding and pacifier for six weeks.

4. Always feed baby on demandWatch for signs of hunger, including: stir-ring or rooting around searching for your nipple, putting his hand in his mouth, sucking motions and lip movements, look-ing increasingly alert, and restlessness.

5. take care of your nipplesIt is important to keep your nipples dry to avoid cracking; letting your natural milk dry on your nipples is known to be soothing and can protect against nipple dryness and cracking. Avoid using lotions

or creams with poten-tial allergens and contact a lactation consultant immediately if you see blisters, cracks or bleeding.

And it is greAt for you!

cArryinG your BABy or toddler...

• Enables better communication between you and your baby (without your baby having to cry!) as you become attuned to your baby’s facial expressions and other gestures.

• Creates confident parents—there’s no better feeling than when your baby is calm and content because you have met all of his or her needs.

• Is convenient — nothing is more awkward than carrying a heavy plastic car seat with one arm!

• Allows you to safely move about with your baby regardless of terrain — you can stroll down uneven sidewalks, narrow lanes, walk up stairs, or climb mountains.

• Is healthy for you—it encourages you to get out and exercise with your little one.

• Makes discreet nursing possible without having to find a place to sit.

• Helps you to interact with your other children while holding your little one close at the same time.

cArried BABies...

• Cry less! 43% less overall and 54% less during evening hours.

• Are healthier! They gain weight faster, have better motor skills, coordination, increased muscle tone, and sense of balance.

• Get a better view of the world! Babies pushed in strollers or lugged around in car seats only get to see the adult world at knee level.

• Become independent faster! Making them confident and less clingy.

• Sleep better! They fall asleep quicker and sleep for longer periods of time.

• Learn more! Not overstimulated, but calm and alert, observing and taking in the world around them.

• Are happier! They feel loved and secure.

1 reAd the MAnuAl.It sounds simple, but most of us do not read manuals for the prod-ucts we buy. While it might be easy to set up your new coffee maker or flat screen TV, installing a car seat is serious busi-ness and the manual is written according to how the car seat is crash tested. Read the warnings and the table of contents first, and then refer to the pages for your specific installation. Some situations might require a phone call to the manufacturer. Do not hesitate to call them if you need assistance. They are happy to help!

2 slide the Belt in the riGht plAce.Car seats have belt paths for either the seat belt or the lower anchor straps to slide through. If the seat is a convertible, it will have two belt paths: One for rear-facing and one for forward-facing. It’s very important to use the appropriate belt path.

3 instAll the seAt tiGht.Once you have pulled the seat belt tight and locked it or pulled the lower anchor strap tight, the car seat should move less than one inch side-to-side or front-to-back when you tug at the belt path. If there is too much movement, start the installation process over or change to another seating position.

4 hArness your child properly.Your child’s harness works just like a race car driver’s harness. It holds them in the car seat and spreads the crash forces over the strongest parts of the body. This helps decrease the risk of injury or death. The harness should fit snug and comfort-able. Try the pinch test up near the collar bone. If you can pinch

the harness webbing between your thumb and index finger, give another tug on the adjuster strap until you can’t pinch any webbing. While there might be room near the belly area, a snug fit up at the collar bone is all you need.

5 check your Work. Most car seats are unknow-ingly installed incorrectly. You might look for a professional to teach your child how to play the piano, tutor them in math, or teach them how to swim. Why not look for a professional that could possibly help save their life? There are dedicated Child Passenger Safety Technicians willing to help. You can find one located near you at safercar.gov

Parents can

easily tell the

story of the

day their ba-

bies were born.

They speak of

the anticipation

and the plan-

ning, the awe

they feel as they

first meet their

little one and the

fear of being home alone with baby. What is

often forgotten and/or ignored is the birth

of the parent and the creation of a family.

Prior to baby, each parent was an individual

and now baby asks for these individuals to

become a dyad and a family. It is important

to embrace that as the child develops, so

does the parent. If a toddler is two, then

that mommy is only a two-year-old mommy,

learning, growing, and changing right along

with her child. This is the salient reason why

it feels shaky and confusing. In parenting you

can never truly know how to respond without

first experiencing the moment and under-

standing the child’s

individuality, tempera-

ment, and development.

Change has a way of

making us feel out of

sorts, and sometimes it

turns on the “danger”

mechanisms of our

neurology asking us to

engage in “fight, flight,

or freeze”. If

parents can

first evaluate

their expecta-

tions and fears,

and discover

the values and

ideals they wish

the family to

carry, while also

understanding

the quick shifts

and turns of a baby’s development, then

the ride can be less bumpy. Multiple studies

show that a baby often leads the parents

into remembering their past, their family, the

values passed on to them. A child will thrive

if the parent can make sense of where they

come from and can then make choices on

what to pass on and what to leave behind.

If these two aspects are clear, then taking a

moment to discover where your child is in

development can make the task of grow-

ing up into a parent a bit easier. Try to take

a couple of minutes every night to remind

yourself of all the things you did right and

that will help to reduce the noise of the

parenting how to’s, do’s and don’ts, and

ease the intrinsic pressure of trying to be the

perfect parent. But most importantly, give

yourself a break, enjoy

the ride, and honor the

journey your child has

just gotten you on.

Page 27: Pregnancy To Parenthood Resource Guide

disposables. One reason is that in cloth they feel the wetness and start to let you know at an early age (the ground work to potty training). In disposables the gel/jelly absorbs the moisture, which is great, however, it is also known to cause health issues such as toxic shock syndrome. Because of the way the disposable is designed, the most mindful parents won’t know their baby has urinated (babies often urinate up to twenty times in 24 hours). The disposable diapered baby, while feeling dry, is actually sitting in her/his waste causing diaper rashes and other health issues.

The cost of diapering is significantly lower with cloth. On average basic disposables are going to cost upwards of an additional $1800.00 per child compared to cloth diapers. Premium or organic disposables will cost even more. Cloth diapers will cost about 1/3 of the cost of disposables.

I have been enjoying cloth diapering and will continue to do so. Esteban is now 8 months old and he looks adorable in the cloth diapers. They come in different designs and patterns and there is nothing more precious than seeing your little one wearing only a cloth diaper. I’ve found that I don’t have leaks, which means no outfits ruined by yellow baby poop! The best benefit that I’ve noticed is, he has NOT gotten a diaper rash. The diaper goes all night without leaking and without irritating his skin.

I have since bought the diaper service and I am now the proud of owner of the only cloth diaper service in South Florida, MotherEarth Diaper Service. I am now educating parents on making healthy choices for their families, the environment and their budgets. If you would

like more information on how to cloth diapering can work for your family, email me at [email protected].

When my husband Michael and I were working on a budget for the arrival of our son Esteban, Michael mentioned cloth diapers. He had been a cloth diaper baby because he was allergic to disposable diapers. I remember being surprised by his request to add cloth diapers to our list for Esteban. So I spent a good portion of my pregnancy researching and learning everything I could about cloth diapering. I learned that using a cloth diaper service is a healthier option for our baby, more convenient than buying disposables, and even more cost-effective. There is also a substantial environmental benefit to using cloth diapers.

My husband and I are busy professionals, and we did not want to clean our own cloth diapers, so I found a diaper service, Mother Earth Diaper Service, which rents us diapers and takes care of cleaning and delivering the diapers.

What I look forward to most is the chance for early potty training for our son. Our national average for potty training is 3 years old, however, worldwide the average is 2 years old. Statistically children who use cloth diapers potty train faster than when using

Who will make financial decisions regarding your child’s inherited assets, what would those assets be used for, and how will your child re-ceive them? Most importantly, what kind of values would you want your children to inherit? If you don’t make these decisions, someone else will make them for you, and your children could end up in the hands of someone you would not have

chosen. Even more, they could end up having to lead a life without your indis-pensable guidance. What most parents don’t know is that planning for their “estate” is not just about finances and personal belong-ings. It’s also about passing on your whole “Family Wealth,” which includes intangible gifts, such as who you are and what’s important to you- your values, insights, stories, and experiences. A Will alone is not equipped to han-dle your whole Family Wealth. Much like a birth plan, having a comprehensive estate plan in place makes for a signifi-cantly more secure and meaningful tran-sition into parenthood. When creating your estate plan, keep in mind that your plan is primarily about providing for your child’s life, not just about preparing for your departure.
