Shared care The doctor and hospital midwife look after mum and baby together. Mum and dad can choose their doctor but do not get to choose their midwife. Mum will normally go to the doctor for her appointments and when baby is ready to be born, mum will see a midwife at hospital. Midwifery led care A midwife leads and provides care during pregnancy. The same midwife or group of midwives will look after mum and baby during pregnancy and labour. A doctor is also available to talk with if mum and dad need to. Public Care

When mum and dad begin their pregnancy journey, it is important they know that there are different health care options to choose from.

Shared careThe doctor and hospital midwife look after mum and baby together. Mum and dad can choose their doctor but do not get to choose their midwife. Mum will normally go to the doctor

Private obstetric careMum and dad can choose and pay for a private obstetrician. The obstetrician

looks after mum and baby during pregnancy, labour and a few weeks

after baby is born. Mum will give birth at the obstetrician’s chosen hospital.

It can be more expensive than Public Care.

Private midwifery careMum and dad can choose and pay for a private midwife to look after mum and baby. The midwife looks after mum and baby during pregnancy, labour and a few weeks after baby is born. Mum will give birth at the

midwife’s chosen hospital. It can be more expensive than Public Care.
