Family andFriends CPRThis American HeartAssociation course isdesigned for parentsand/or babysitters ofinfants and smallchildren. Participantsare instructed in cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) and foreign body airway obstruction(choking) management. A textbook is included.This is not a certification course.

Grandparenting 101Are you a first-time grandparent? If so, you maybe anxious and unsure of all the changes sinceyou were a new parent. Babies haven’t changed…the world around them has. This one-night, two-hour class is designed to refresh and update yourknowledge about safety, car seats, bathing, illness,and so much more. Come join other grandparents-to-be as they get the latest recommendations onbeing supportive of the new family. This class istaught by a registered nurse, internationallycertified Lamaze childbirth educator who is also a proud grandmother.

Prepared ChildbirthEducation for Teen Mothers This one-session program is designed to prepareexpectant teenage mothers for labor andchildbirth. Expectant mothers will receiveinformation on labor and birth; comfort measuresand relaxation methods; pain management;postpartum recovery and preparing to bring their baby home.

The session also includes a tour of the birthing unitand postpartum floor at St. Peter's Hospital. Thiscourse is recommended for expectant teenagemothers (up to the age of 18), and should be takentwo months prior to delivery.

Postpartum Peer SupportGroup St. Peter's Hospital offers a free support groupwhere mothers can share their experiences andoffer support to one another. Mothers are welcometo bring their babies, but childcare is not available.Meetings are held monthly. For dates and times, call 525-1873.

To RegisterIt is recommended to sign up for classes during your fifth month of pregnancy (if possible). Oftenclasses fill up quickly, so by scheduling early, you willmost likely complete these classes within yourseventh month of pregnancy.

But how do expectant parents preparefor this lifetime challenge? St. Peter’s HospitalWomen’s & Children’s Services understands thecommon concerns, and is able to help during thiswonderful time. To ensure a truly special parentingexperience, preparations begin early in pregnancyand continue well after a baby is born. St. Peter’sHospital offers a variety of community educationprograms to help:

• Promote a healthy pregnancy• Prepare for baby’s birth, and • Get a “head start” on the road to parenthood

Whether this is a first pregnancy, or anotheraddition to the family, St. Peter’s Hospital has aneducational program specially designed to meetthose needs.

Maternity Information NightThis one-session program focuses on individuals whoare approximately halfway through their pregnancy.Participants will become familiar with our maternityand newborn services, tour our facility and meet withour team of professionals. This includes the managersof the Labor & Delivery Unit, the Mother-Baby Unit,the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and a lactationconsultant who can answer your questions.

Expectant Parents’ TourThe Expectant Parents’ Tour* is designed to provideparticipants with information on the services andprograms available at St. Peter’s Hospital. Parents-to-be will visit our birthing rooms, the Mother-BabyUnit, and the infant nurseries. This program is openonly to adults. Children may not attend.

Baby and Me SiblingPreparation ClassThis class is designed to assist parents in preparingtheir preschool and elementary-age children for thearrival of a new baby. Participants will explore somecommon changes that occur when a new baby joinsthe family. Children are encouraged to react to thepositive and negative feelings that arise as theyanticipate the birth of their new brother or sister.Children are taught infant safety (e.g., do not pick upbaby without help and permission; do not give orfeed baby small objects). The program includes a tourof the Mother-Baby Unit.

Lamaze Prepared ChildbirthThis program is designed to empower women andtheir partners during their journey toward birth.Participants will receive information on theprocesses of labor and birth, comfort measures,and relaxation methods to use during labor.Additional topics include anesthesia andmedication options for labor, birth and cesareandelivery. A tour of the facility is included. St. Peter’sHospital offers a three-week series or a “marathonSaturday.”

Cesarean Birth ClassThis one-session class helps prepare parentswho expect to have a cesarean birth. The classincludes information on the cesarean birthprocess, anesthesia and pain control optionsavailable, and information on what to expectfollowing a cesarean birth.

VBAC (Vaginal Birth AfterCesarean)This class will provide the knowledge needed tohelp make an informed decision about attemptinga VBAC. The benefits and risks of VBAC will bediscussed, as well as available birthing options andtechniques for optimizing the chances for avaginal birth.

Breastfeeding Your BabyThis class will address breastfeeding, the process of milk production, and the needs of infants andparents. A certified lactation consultant or certifiedlactation counselor will offer suggestions topromote a positive and satisfying breastfeedingexperience for both mother and baby. This class isrecommended at any time during pregnancy forwomen who are anticipating or are undecidedabout breastfeeding. Partners or support personsare encouraged to attend.

CRIB Notes – New ParentsClassGoing home with a new baby is an exciting yetseemingly overwhelming experience. This programis designed to answer frequently asked questionsand offer strategies for making the transition froma couple to a family. Topics covered in class includenewborn characteristics and behaviors, baby’s cues,infant sleeping patterns, introducing pets to thenewest family member, infant care, signs of illness,safety, and items you need to buy to prepare foryour new baby. Also included in the two-eveningclass series is how to properly install a car seat, ledby a certified car seat technician.
