Dance Competition - 13th March 2018
In January 2018, Kingsdale Foundation School entered its after-school dancers
into the Southwark Borough’s internal Dance Competition to find the best groups to represent Southwark in the Annual London Youth Games Dance Competition. Both Key Stages 3 & 4 dancers were judged alongside all other
Southwark schools by way of video submission, showing the students performing a Dance routine. Both Key Stages were picked to represent
Southwark! Kingsdale’s Key Stage 3 dancers were up against 24 other London Borough’s and came 3rd in the competition. They have qualified for the United Dance Organisation’s Secondary School’s Dance Competition in Stoke on
Trent on Tuesday 18th April 2018.
Key Stage 4 dancers also competed and, out of the 22 Borough’s, came 6th. This was a very tough heat, so well done to them also!

C3 Collaborative Project Year 12 and 13 Art, Textiles &
Photography students are taking part in the third instalment of the Collaboration Project. ‘Collaboration Three’ sees 20
students from Kingsdale Foundation School and Bacon’s College collaborating
in pairs to produce an artwork of their choosing. Workshops are being held at The Paper Garden which is an exciting
community project set up by Global Generation as part of the Printworks in Surrey Quays. Students have been
inspired by the work of The Paper Garden, who aim to incorporate the local
community in their projects. The project will culminate with the students curating their own exhibition of their work which
will be held at The Paper Garden on 29th March 2018. The project began on 21st
February and will run for 6 weeks.

Articulation Prize and Conference 2018
The ARTiculation Prize is a nationally acclaimed annual competition
designed to promote both the appreciation and discussion of art. The competition seeks to encourage students aged 16-19 in full-time education
to engage with visual culture and develop their critical thinking and communication skills, regardless of background or experience. Each student is invited to deliver a ten-minute presentation to an interested
audience about a work of art, artefact or architecture of their choice. Maya Howard won the Kingsdale School heat with her passionate and personal take on Matisse’s ‘Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence’ which she presented in
the Regional Final at the Whitechapel Gallery in November and, despite not making it to the Grand Final, she received the Kenneth Clarke Travel
Award. All four of the participants from Kingsdale Foundation School were invited to the Grand Final and to a conference held at Claire College Cambridge where, apart from watching the riveting final, the students
were treated to a university fair with taster lectures in Art History from seven Russell Group university professors and tours around the
Cambridge colleges and chapels.

Careers Talk on IT
7th March 2018
As part of the school’s ongoing Careers programme, a group of Year 12
students were treated to a talk from Mr Ernani Lara who, outside of being a Kingsdale parent, works as a business analyst in an IT consultancy in the
City of London. Drawing on the culmination of over 20 years of experience in the sector, Mr Lara led a presentation that offered expert commentary on what it means to be part of one of the most dynamic fields of employment
today, whilst going some way towards busting a lot of the jargon associated with the profession!
It made for an engaging and informative afternoon, with many of our sixth formers now sure that in any future avenue of employment, Information
Technology will play a critical part. We would very much like to encourage our parent community to get
involved in the Career Talk Series at Kingsdale Foundation School. Please contact Mrs Chaudhary at [email protected], if you are willing to talk about your profession, what makes it worth pursuing its
challenges, the academic route involved and the diversity of opportunities within the chosen career pathway.

Year 12 & 13 Art, Textiles & Photography Trip to
Florence, Italy 1st - 4th March 2018
During the first weekend of March we were enjoyed the brilliant experience of visiting Florence in Italy. It did rain quite a bit, but we still
had loads of fun visiting lots of different galleries and sights. We saw the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, which is the Cathedral in Florence. We visited the Uffizi Gallery, which has the world’s largest collection of
Renaissance art, including Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’. We saw the Ponte Vecchio, which is a medieval bridge that goes over the river, which
has buildings and shops on it. We saw the Palazzo Pitti, or the Pitti Pal-ace, which also has a lot of Renaissance art, as well as massive gardens. We also visited the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, which is where
Michelangelo’s sculpture of ‘David’ is located. The artwork we saw was inspiring, as was all of the food…!

WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATION AT KINGSDALE
1st & 2nd March 2018 Students from all year groups took part in a range of activities to celebrate ‘World Book Day’ at Kingsdale Foundation School. The ‘Blind Date with a Book’ challenge
introduced them to some great books recommended by our teachers, who hand-picked the best novels we have in the library, wrapped and decorated them in coloured paper
and used just a few key words to describe the plot. With lots of enthusiasm, students treated themselves by borrowing these books to read at home over a cold, snowy weekend!
Our ‘Guess the Reader’ challenge got a number of students involved as detectives! The librarians played paparazzi and managed to take some photos whenever they caught
staff reading/discussing their favourite books. Students engaged in this photo exhibition and many guessed the teachers’ names correctly and won prizes!
Some famous book characters were also on display! We’ve got some great names from all over the world and centuries, especially from books that were adapted as films. A few students even opted to read these books and find out more about these famous
characters... Book Quiz was the most popular of all events! Students were challenged with a number
of book quizzes before school, during lunchtime and after school, and they did rise to the challenge. Again, prizes and certificates were won by many! A few other activities to mention- Year 7 Treasure Hunt, mini saga challenge,
Southwark Book Challenge and then there were some book recommendations from our parent community! A big thank you to the parents who sent in the book reviews/ recommendations and we look forward to further such contributions at
[email protected]. We have included one book recommendation in this edition from one of our parents (Mr Matt Collins):
I read this at school and loved it. I even re-created the radio play version with friends as
an English project. Culturally relevant and as the review excerpt below says, inspired
lunacy!

Prize Giving & Awards - 23rd February 2018 On Friday 23rd February 2018, we celebrated the incredibly impressive achievements of our students during the academic year 2016-17 with three
Annual Prize Giving and Award Ceremony events. Two of these were held during the day, celebrating Key Stages 3 & 4 achievement respectively, with a third being held in the evening which welcomed back graduates from the
school and Sixth Form students. These were occasions for us to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of the last academic year and to celebrate all
that makes Kingsdale Foundation School such a special place in which to learn and flourish.
For our evening cere-mony we were honoured to have Chi-Chi Nwanoku OBE, a renowned and
celebrated classical musician, as our Guest of Honour, who spoke to the students about their achievements but also of those that they could aspire to with hard work and dedication. Along with first class musical recitals
from our talented young people, the three events were a highlight of our calendar year which saw over 500 commendations and prizes for academic
excellence and progress being awarded. Our students were well supported by our dedicated staff, their families and friends. It was indeed a pleasure for all to share in their success on these occasions.

the Sixth Form musicians to showcase their skills. A huge Thank You to all the performers for a truly spectacular evening of amazing
musical talent!

Language students in Berlin! On 7th February, 27 German students from Years 8, 9 and 10
went to Berlin for five days. They arrived at their hotel around 2pm and started exploring the city. This
included going up the TV Tower and the DDR Museum. Over the next five
days, they discovered and learned a lot about Berlin’s history and culture, including about WWII, the Cold War
and the Berlin Wall, which they visited, along with the Holocaust Memorial and Checkpoint Charlie.
As well as this they took two German lessons in the Berlitz language centre where they got to practise their speaking
and listening skills in real situations. Although it was very cold, everyone had a great time exploring the city’s culture, history and language.
We are delighted to say that we have been invited to take part in the Dulwich Festival's Children's Art Competition!
The event is marking 100 years of votes for women, 50 years of the NHS, a Royal Wedding and the 25th Birthday of the Dulwich Festival, the 2018 theme is "celebration" which is open to however entrants wish to interpret it!

Girl’s football success
The 2017/18 football season has the potential to make history here at
Kingsdale. Our under 16 girls have secured their place in the Inner London
Cup semi-final which will be played after Easter. They plan to finish their
school careers as London Champions. Our Under 14 girls football team made
it to the third round of the Inner London Cup before coming across a very
well organised Stoke Newington side. Their focus will now be on winning a
regional tournament in the next few weeks. Our under 13 girls football team
have battled their way through to the 7th Round of the English Schools Cup
meaning they finished in the final 8 in the country! This is a fantastic
achievement and they battled hard on their final game against Kesgrave
narrowly missing out on the Semi-finals with a 2-1 loss. The under 12 team
made it through to the London Semi-final after a great first season. I predict
our under 12 team to have a great footballing career ahead of them. I would
like to say a massive congratulations to all involved in the above success. I
look forward to enjoying their continued commitment and accomplishments.
