REGIONAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE By Richard Schauer

Suddenly here we are at the end of yet another year. Certainly 2020 will go down in history as a NOT particularly stellar year. But we have had fun in spite of the challenges, haven’t we?

1941 Packard 110 in the 1942 Movie, Holiday Inn We enjoyed the Mardis Gras, the Gondola ride, Idyllwild, and numerous spontaneously organized combined club tours. Cancellation of the remainder of our 2020 calendar of events is regrettable but wait ‘til you see our events line up for 2021 (see calendar on Page X)! Our club does not rest. We are always thinking of ways to get out, break loose, free our minds and bodies not to mention our Packards. We look to 2021 with great optimism. It is with great pride that I announce the creation of a new membership category for our region of PAC. Effective immediately we now have a Junior Member category. This is one of those ideas where we smack ourselves on the forehead and exclaim “Why didn’t we think of this before?!” We agonize trying to find ways to expose our wonderful cars to young people, to stimulate interest in the next generations toward the Packard motorcar. Junior Member is a fine idea. The rules are simple. Here they are: candidates must be under 18 years of age. They pay no dues. They become honored members of the San Diego Region but do not have to join PAC (indeed they cannot until the age of majority). Candidates may be sons/daughters of members or grandchildren, but may also be children of friends. The sole criteria are an interest in automobiles, and hopefully an interest in the Packard motorcar, an interest that we will fervently cultivate. Junior members will be eligible to attend club events, will be encouraged to ride along, or perhaps even take a turn driving a Packard. They may volunteer to assist at club events, or even sponsor an event (under guidance from a regular member). A junior member should have a sponsor, who would also mentor this young person. I suspect many regular members will be delighted to take such youngers under their wings as well.

This is a win/win scenario for everyone. We already have our first Junior Member, namely Mr. Jacob Findley, age 17, who attends Point Loma High School and participates as an altar boy at St. Agnes parish, and he is sponsored by Tim Pestotnik. We look forward to admitting many more juniors to our club roster, so please submit your candidates right away! Speaking of membership, our 2021 membership renewal drive is in full swing. Please send in your renewal before the Christmas season is upon us, and do not forget to also renew your membership with PAC. We welcome new member Nick and Raisa Pisano of Rancho Santa Fe, who owns a 1931 Model 840 Roadster. Nick and son Victor attended the November 15 Heart of San Diego Tour (see article this issue). Speaking of planning 2020 is not finished yet. Don’t forget to sign up for the December 5 Christmas luncheon at the Lazy-H. This year we will dine outdoors on the patio between the restaurant and the John Wayne room. Let’s finish off the year with one heckuva’ good time! Looking ahead to 2021 the May Western Regions Tour is fast approaching. Catherine Woolsey and Marjo Miller have graciously volunteered to take the leadership role in organizing this very big event. As project leaders they will put together a “to-do” list and will be recruiting volunteers to assist. We will need lots of talented members to step up to help, so mark your calendars. Our thanks go to Catherine and Marjo.

ANNUALPLANNING MEETING

The board, filled with the optimism that the world is back to its normal state of confusion that we were accustomed to poor to COVID, has met and panned a schedule of fun filled events for 2021. Check the schedule on page 20 and see what’s up. We have a new year’s day drive directed by Catherine Woolsey. Check out the flyer. In February there is a wash and shine with burgers, Stay tuned for that. We are pleased to announce that the Mercedes-Benz Club is hard at work planning their time honored bash, Tequila Rose, which we refer to as Borrego Springs. The Borrego Springs Resort and Spa is in work now putting together a package for us. The dates for that are March 26 and 27, 2021.

Heart of San Diego Fall Tour Sunday November 8, 2020

Fresh air, sunshine, lovely people and beautiful cars were the word of the day Sunday, November 15, 2020. I sincerely believe we had the COVID on the run. We were led by Tom Pestotnik driving his 1934 award winning Convertible Coupe

We joined the Mercedes-Benz Club for this tour led by e this stunning 1961, 190SL driven by club President Diana Kruse with her navigator Joanne Barnard.

The tour began at the Speckles Park in Coronado where we were provided with donuts and fresh water to give us the energy needed for the drive. Lady facing camera is Debra Lopez

Nicola Pisano, Richard and Joey Costa Here we have tour Director Tim giving us the directions

Car Clubs participating in the tour were the Mercedes-Benz Club, and the Classic Car Club of America and perhaps others that just showed up. It is believed there were twenty eight cars but that is not an official count. Everyone was welcome. The cars ranged in age from a 1924 Bentley to a late model Mercedes-Benz. One Italian automobile slipped in which was a

Ferrari driven by Nicola Pisano of the Packard Club. The Packard is “in work”. Headed down Orange Ave, passing by the Hotel Del cite of many of our past events, to prepare for bridge crossing.

Nicola’s Ferrari. I know it is not a Packard nor a Mercedes-Benz or a Classic Car by CCCA standards but, we are all inclusive and Nicola is a member of the Packard Club. Besides that it is a “bitchin ride”.

A very nice 300 SEL 6.3, W100, Mercedes-Benz built from 1968 to 1972. It was referred to as a two ton sports sedan. Performance was impressive even by today’s standards. 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, Quarter mile in 14.2 seconds, a top speed of 136.7 mph.

The oldest car on the tour, a 1924 Bentley. It was one of the first production cars with a three litre, engine, 4 valves per cylinder, dry-sump lubrication and an overhead camshaft. The four valve SOHC Hemi design, with a bevel-geared shaft drive for the camshaft, was based on the pre-war 1914 Mercedes Daimler M93654 racing engine. This model won the French Le Mans in 1924 and in 1927. When tuned for racing this Bentley was good for 100mph.

Driving down Orange avenue in Coronado and proceeding down the Coronado Strand to the Coronado Cays and back to Coronado to cross the bay bridge, we gave Balboa Park folks a view of our fine automobiles. From Balboa we wound our way through Point Loma to the Fort

Rosecrans National Cemetery where we stopped for a bit to honor the fallen warriors and admire the beautiful scenery. Since it was lunch time the convey dropped down the point to shelter island for a picnic on the bay. We were treated by an unscheduled airshow at shelter island. Who it was, I have no idea nor the type aircraft? Maybe T-34 Navy trainers?

NEW YEAR’S DAY DRIVE

It has been rumored, without any supporting evidence, that Ward Packard usually went for a drive on New Year’s Day, especially if he was in Florida. We are going to honor that tradition by having a new year’s day drive. We will be joining the Classic Car Club of America and the Packard club for this tour along the tree lined roads of San Diego County.

Mr. and Misses James Ward Packard Ladies in for a ride at Daytona Beach

We are joining the San Diego/Palm Springs Region Classic Car Club for a driving tour to the Sublime Ale House in San Marcos. We’ll start with a leisurely tour through the back roads of Escondido, Vista and San Marcos, and end with a great lunch at the Ale House. We will travel old tree lined roads our club has never driven before. So shine up your ride (or not) and let’s get going. Guaranteed a scenic drive. Date: Friday January 1, 2021 Place: Westfield North County Mall I-15 and Via Rancho Pkwy, Macaroni Grill lot. Time: 10:00 a.m. Cost: No host lunch with a great menu RSVP: Catherine Woolsey at (760) 525-1931 or [email protected]

These guys are not invited so keep an eye out for them,

WHAT A YEAR S. Ross

As the year of 2020 comes to an end it marks of the one hundred thirty fourth anniversary of the automobile, the sixty fifth for the invention of polio vaccine, “ The Bomb” celebrates its seventy fifth, and Penicillin is ninety two. Not to be outdone 2020 gave us COVID-19, the World Pandemic to end all pandemics, and our Countries fifty nineth, ever entertaining and tumultuous Presidential election. 2021 will be hard pressed to give the world a jolt, in fact it may be lucky to handle what 2020 passed on. Now let us take a look at what our Packard World was like. For the most part it was a good year for the Packard people. Yes some of our fun may have been curtailed a bit but we found a way to meet the challenge and have some damn fun any way! We didn’t have a bunch of car shows to go to and run the chance of being disappointed after all that polishing and wiping. Many of our second favorite Ladies, you know who I mean, finally got that extra attention needed to be faithful and dependable, Buttercup being one of them. I am sure there is no need to tell anyone what we did for fun, you have already read about it in your Predictor, and if you forgot you can always go back and read about it. As your editor, I sincerely thank all of you kind people who kept the wheels rolling, giving me something to put in your Predictor. No activity equals nothing to write about, without making stuff up. There is another term for that but I forgot what it was. I thank Brian Wagner for his articles, and Richard Schauer for his selected shorts. The treasurer wanted to let everyone know we are in an outstanding financial condition, thanks to the tireless efforts of our Projects Director Mr. Paul Santy and his crew, Richard Schauer, Mark Ballerini and Karl Ramsing . I spoke with the editor about his insane idea of giving away money for finding a photo of an old car and knowing the name of a car. The hidden ,whatever it is, is far too easy to find and knowing the name of a car, Please!, even the Ladies know that. In spite of this foolishness your club is in really, really good shape.

Let’s kick 2020 out the door and show 2021 what we can do for him or her? Oh well, standby for a fun filled Packard Year.

1938 Packard 6-Cylinder Engine and 3-Speed Transmission for Sale.

The engine was in running condition when it was removed from the car. It developed a knock which is probably a loose connecting rod. The engine has well under 10K miles on it since being overhauled about 4 years ago. The cylinder head was resurfaced and the cylinders were bored. Then, all new valves & guides and new pistons & rings were installed. The engine rebuild work was performed by Kenyon Machine Shop. The flywheel was resurfaced, and a new clutch & pressure plate and a new throw out bearing were also installed.
