Greetings from Portugal! Our tour has taken us
from Nice and Monaco to Lourdes. We were
fortunate to leave Nice when we did as torrential
rains drenched the area later that day. Lourdes
was a slice of heaven, with candlelight
procession, International mass and a totally
prayerful atmosphere. Spain has been most
interesting with tours of Madrid, Avila and
Salamanca. Today, Thursday, we are en route
to Fatima. Know you are held in prayer. With
best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving and the gift
of gratitude.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY OCTOBER 18TH Every Christian shares in the mission of the Church and should become involved in today’s
missionary work. Each Christian community must “pray that the Lord’s message may spread
quickly, and be received with honour” (2 Thessalonians 3.1) Parishes should take seriously
their responsibility of all believers to spread the Gospel and consider inviting their communities
to fast and pray this week for the missionary work of the people of God.
A growing understanding of the Church’s mission will also encourage responsible giving to the
national collection for World Mission Day (from which some of our Canadian dioceses still
benefit).

PARISH ARISE PROGRAM
As 60 members of the Parish prepare for the final session of this Gospel
Reflection Prayer (to which all parishioners are invited), we asked that you
join us by praying for the spiritual fruitfulness of our gatherings.

Once again we will be hosting a Pasta and Meatball Supper on the first Tuesday of each month at the Grand
Gardens Dennis Street. The cost per meal is $9.99 for Adults and Children $5.99.
Proceeds from the Supper is designated for the Journey. Hope to see you there.
Catholic Women’s League A very interesting and informative presentation on Alzheimer’s Disease was given by Janice
Seppala. Thank you to the ladies who attended and to Fr. Ignatius for his support along with a
dessert supplied by Anne and Dale.
On Monday October 19th Sr. Roberta Low is facilitating an afternoon of Spiritual Reflection,
beginning at noon at St. Ambrose Parish in Thessalon.
All members will have received a Nominations Form to be filled out and returned to the
Church by Oct. 27th. We look forward to your input for this very important time of our
election process.
Membership dues can be paid anytime now for 2016. A reminder that they will be $25.00 . You
may put the payment in a plain envelope marked CWL and drop it off in the Collection
Basket at Mass.
Journey tickets may be obtained for selling by calling Louise at 705-254-7869.
Remember that this is one of our fund raisers where we earn 1.00 a ticket sold.

Huron Superior Catholic District School Board The new St. Mary’s College will be blessed on October 23 by Bishop Plouffe. A grand opening of the new secondary school will take place on October 30th with various dignitaries in attendance. The Board is hosting a Gala Fundraiser to assist in enhancing arts and athletics at St. Mary’s College. The As ONE Gala will take place on Saturday November 7th. Twenty-Eighth Week of Ordinary Time
The powerful story of the rich young man will be repeated in the gospel in the Twenty-eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time. He asks Jesus what he can do to inherit eternal life and already keeps the commandments. Jesus offers him the challenge of the gospel: “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor ... then come, follow me.” Mark's gospel tells us that the young man “went away sad, for he had many possessions.” When Jesus tells his followers how hard it will be for a rich person to be saved they are astonished - and worried. They wondered how they could ever be saved. “All things are possible for God,” was Jesus' response. Thursday we remember Saint Teresa Avila, formally known as Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. Saturday is the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr.
We begin reading Paul's Letter to the Romans for our first reading this week. After a powerful introduction, Paul writes this community in Rome about God's righteousness (mercy or kindness) and justification (making us holy or one with God) which comes to us, not through the law but through faith in Jesus.
Each day we move through Luke's gospel as people gather around Jesus. He declines to give a sign other than the sign of Jonah. At a Pharisee's house Jesus calls for authenticity: “give alms and everything will be clean for you.” He challenges the religious practices of the Pharisees which miss the heart of fidelity to God and mercy toward others. Jesus tries to get them to see that, while they honor the prophets, they are no better than their ancestors who ignored and killed the prophets. Instead of hearing him, the religious leaders plot to trap Jesus. Warning his disciples about imitating religious hypocrisy, Jesus tells them not to be afraid, even of death, but to only fear losing their souls. Acknowledging Jesus is enough to save us. When we make our defense of our faith and way of life, the Holy Spirit will teach us what to say. For the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear the story from Mark’s Gospel about two of Jesus’ closest friends, James and John, who want seats of honor in “the Kingdom” they envision for Jesus. We can almost see Jesus shake his head in dismay that they have missed his point once again. He does not let his disciples get sidetracked into jealousy but calls them together again to give them his message: “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
