CoAEMSP:PreceptorTrainingPractices🚑 AccreditedParamediceducationalprogramsmustensurethatclinicalandfieldeducatorswhoevaluatestudentshavecompletedpreceptororientation/training.Sometimestheprogramprovidesthatorientation/trainingdirectlyandothertimestheclinicalsiteorfieldagencyprovidestheirownprogram.

PreceptorTraining/Orientation(StandardIIIB1.a.6))Thetrainingmediamaytakemanyforms:writtendocuments,formalcourse,powerpointpresentation,video,on-line,ortherecouldbedesignatedtrainerson-sitethattheprogramrelieson.Theprogramshouldtailorthemethodofdeliverytothetypeofrotation

Theprogrammustidentifyakeypersoninhospitals(departments),inotherclinicalexperiencesettings,andforfieldexperience.Theprogrammustdemonstratethateverykeypersonhascompletedtheorientation.Theprogramcanthenarrangetohavethosekeypersonnelprovideguidancetoanyotherpreceptorsinthosesettings.

Theprogrammustdemonstratethateachcapstonefieldinternshippreceptorhascompletedthetraining.Forexample,theremaybeanon-linesessiondocumentingcompletionbythepreceptor,ortheremaybeawrittenpacketprovidedbytheprogram,whichisreadandsignedbythepreceptoratthestartoftherotation,orarepresentativeoftheprogrammaymeetbrieflywiththepotentialpreceptorsatthatlocation

Thetraining/orientationmustincludethefollowingtopics:v Purposesofthestudentrotation(minimumcompetencies,skills,andbehaviors)

EvaluationandEvidenceofPreceptorTraining/OrientationForclinicalandfieldexperiences,theprogramshouldfocusontheevaluationoftheexperience,butthatevaluationmustincludeatleastanoverall,notnecessarilyindividual,evaluationofthepreceptors.

Forcapstonefieldinternshipexperiences,theprogramshouldfocusontheevaluationoftheexperience,butthatevaluationmustincludeanevaluationofeachactivecapstonefieldinternshippreceptor.

Theprogrammustprovideevidenceofthecompletionofthetrainingofcapstonefieldinternshippreceptorsbydatedrostersofparticipants,on-linelogs,signedacknowledgementbythecapstonefieldinternshippreceptor.

StandardIIIC3Curriculum(TeamLeads)EachprogramisrequiredtodefineTeamLeadanddocumentitinprogrammaterials.

Minimumteamleadsmustbeestablishedbytheprogramandaccomplishedbyeachstudent.Thenumberofteamleadsisestablishedandanalyzedbytheprogramthroughtheprogramevaluationsystemandmustreflectthedepthandbreadthoftheparamedicprofession.

TobecountedasaTeamLeadtheParamedicstudentmustconductacomprehensiveassessment,establishafieldimpression,determinepatientacuity,formulateatreatmentplan,directthetreatment,anddirectandparticipateinthetransportofthepatienttoamedicalfacility,transferofcaretoahigherlevelofmedicalauthority,orterminationofcareinthefield

StandardIV.A.2.Student Evaluation-Documentationb.Theprogrammusttrackanddocumentthateachstudentsuccessfullymeetseachoftheprogramestablishedminimumpatient/skillrequirementsfortheappropriateexitpointaccordingtopatientage-range,chiefcomplaint,andinterventions.

Thetrackingsystemmustincorporateandidentifytheminimumcompetencies(programrequiredminimumcompetencynumbers)requiredforeachexposuregroup,whichencompassespatientage(pediatricagesubgroupsmustinclude: newborn,infant,toddler,preschooler,school-ager,andadolescent),pathologies,complaint,gender,andintervention,foreachstudent.

Limitingthenumberofpreceptorstoasfewaspossibletoensurecontinuityofthestudent'seducation.

ü Ifastudentseesadifferentpreceptoreachtimeheorsherides,itisverydifficulttoknowifheorsheisprogressingtowardsentry-levelcompetency.Thismeans

ü ifastudentisstrugglinginaparticulararea,thepreceptorcanrecognizetheproblemandthenworkwiththestudentaccordinglyinordertoremediateanydeficiencies.

ü Italsopreventsastudentfromgettingtotheendoftheprogramonlytorealizeheorsheisnotreadytograduate.Thisisamatteroffairpracticewhichhelpsprotectthestudentandtheprogramfrompossibleadverseaction(s).Foragenciesthatsimplycannotachieveassigningoneortwopreceptorstoasinglestudent,theprogramisrequiredtodocumenttheevidenceofcommunicationbetweenpreceptorsandthestudenttoallowtheadequatefeedbackforprogression.

PreceptorEvaluationStandardIIIB1a- theprogramshouldfocusontheevaluationoftheexperience,butthatevaluationmustincludeanevaluationofeachactivecapstonefieldinternshippreceptor.

Programsshouldcheckinwiththepreceptorsonaregularbasis.Apreceptorprogramisonlysuccessfulifthestudentfeltthattheyweretrainedwell.Programsmustobtainfeedbackfromstudentstoevaluatethepreceptor,andcoachthepreceptorasneeded.

Afterthetrainingprogramandoncethepreceptorhaspreceptedseveralstudents,theyshouldbesurveyedontheeffectivenessofthetraining/orientationprogram.Thepreceptorwillbeabletoevaluatetheprogramconcerninghowwellitpreparedthemtopreceptstudents.

TakeawaysAgoodpreceptortrainingprogramshouldbetweakedandupdatedannuallytoreflectcurrenttrendsandchangeswithintheprogram.Feedbackfromboththepreceptorandthestudentisyourbesttoolforevaluatingthesuccessofyourpreceptortrainingprogram.
