PreAP U.S. History Summer Assignment 2017-2018 1 PreAP U.S. History Summer Assignment As a prerequisite to the course, PreAP U.S. History students are expected to have a certain level of background knowledge and skills. Having a basic understanding of the physical and political geography of the United States and the world will provide students with a strong working mental map, giving students the ability to be more successful throughout the course. To ensure students are adequately prepared for the geographic requirements of PreAP U.S. History, students have been assigned to complete a series of physical and political geographic maps as a summer assignment. Below you will find essential information regarding the assignment, as well as helpful tips. Texas Essential Knowledge Standards: 8.10 Geography. The student understands the location and characteristics of places and regions of the United States, past and present. The student is expected to: (A) SUPPORTING locate places and regions of importance in the United States during the 17th, 18th 8.29 Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired through established research methodologies from a variety of valid sources, including electronic technology. The student is expected to: (C) organize and interpret information from outlines, reports, databases, and visuals, including graphs, charts, timelines, and maps (I) create thematic maps, graphs, charts, models, and databases representing various aspects of the United States TASK: Students are to identify, review, study, and memorize the locations of these physical and political maps. Students will be able to pass an assessment of their knowledge of these maps during the first week of class and throughout the year. TIPS: Students should download and complete the required identifications on the various maps. Students are also encouraged to utilize the online study tools for maps readily available online. PREPARATION: Studying for map tests takes time and preparation. The first step is to find each feature and label blank outline maps. You can use multiple copies of the attached maps to quiz yourself. ASSESSMENT: Students will take an assessment within the first week of school on each of the maps included in the Summer Assignment file. Each student MUST attain at least the minimum passing score of 70%. Students who score below a 70% will be required to retake the exam until the minimum standard is achieved. PreAP U.S. History Summer Assignment

As a prerequisite to the course, PreAP U.S. History students are expected to have a certain level of background

knowledge and skills. Having a basic understanding of the physical and political geography of the United States

and the world will provide students with a strong working mental map, giving students the ability to be more

successful throughout the course.

To ensure students are adequately prepared for the geographic requirements of PreAP U.S. History, students

have been assigned to complete a series of physical and political geographic maps as a summer assignment.

Below you will find essential information regarding the assignment, as well as helpful tips.
