Pre-‐K and Kindergarten Math
Growing Young Mathematicians
The Teaching Math to Young Children practice
guide is organized around five main
recommendations, each supported by a set of clear, action-oriented
steps teacherscan use in their
classrooms.
Recommenda9on 1: Teach number and opera8ons using a developmental progression.
Provide children with opportuni9es to subi9ze small collec9ons, prac9ce coun9ng, compare the magnitude of collec9ons, and use numerals to quan9fy collec9ons before moving on to simple arithme9c problems.
Recommenda9on 2:
Teach geometry, paGerns, measurement and data analysis using
a developmental progression
Teach children to recognize and compare shapes, iden9fy and create paGerns, make direct comparisons using measurement tools, and collect and organize informa9on.
Recommenda9on 3:
Use progress monitoring to ensure that math instruc9on builds on what each
child knows.
Determine children’s current level of math knowledge based on a developmental progression, and then use the informa9on about children’s skills to tailor instruc9on.
Recommenda9on 4: Teach children to view and describe
their world mathema9cally.
Use informal methods to represent math concepts generally before linking to formal vocabulary and symbols. Open-‐ended ques9ons and math conversa9on encourages applying math to the everyday situa9ons.
Recommenda9on 5: Dedicate 9me each
day to teaching math, and integrated math
instruc9on throughout the school
day.
Deliberately set aside 9me each day to teach math and look for opportuni9es to incorporate math across the curriculum.
