    Fable Research:

I started my research into fables by reading the Aesop's Fables. The story which

stood out the most to me was how the elephant got its trunk. It was about an ele-

phant who was curious to what crocodiles ate so went to find out for himself. When

the crocodile tried to eat the elephant they stretched its trunk out in their battle. After

looking into these I created some of my own little story lines:

how the nurse got her hat

    Why nurses are on boats

Queen of nurses lives at sea

    Healing / death boat

Junk on boatsnurses left to deal with them (recycling moral)

Nurses cant leave the hospital for too long

    Kittens on holiday

    Snail island

    Bean bag belly

I researched what a fable actually was. I found out that its a story which teaches a

lesson. Characters are animals. Animals talk. Its a moral lesson for life. Such as doto others as you would like them to do to you. Animals in fables were often chal-

lenged by their natural enemies. I kept looking for morals for my story but I was find-

ing it hard to think of a new one.

Another idea: Nurse isnt happy with her life so she runs away on a boat run by

either grizzly bears / butterflies. Nearly dies in a bubble frenzy. Starts up a bear

rescue boat hospital and travels the world.

I attended a scriptwriting lecture where I learn about the three act

structure and the 7 basic plots. It seemed my idea could be a

voyaged structure; where the main character goes on a journey

and comes back a better person.

I started drawing out rough ideas for my storyline however I became quite bored of my

story half way through so cut it off short.

Still stuck for a good storyline I tried to work out what my nurse wanted.

Rich; help everyone; adventure; best nurse; family; friends; to be doctor; find herself; love; rela-

tionship; to see the world; doctor skills; happiness.

I looked into Florence Nightingale and how she changed nursing forever. This gave me an ex-

    citing new idea:

The world runs low / our of nurses

So they borrow some from the past

My nurse is assigned to work on a cruise liner

    Befriends a sick bear cub

The nurses being sent back had leaned so much that technology began correcting itself

No more need for old nurses

My nurse is sent home but writes a diary of her life for her friend

    Story after thoughts:

doctors not happy doing nurses jobs

    All characters are bears

    Maybe kidnap nurses

Stealing wont do good for long

Nurse wants to get back home

    Nightingale: founder of modern nurs-

    ing (1820 - 1910) made famous from

helping wounded troupes in the Cri-

    mean War 1853 - 56.

Fable Research:I looked up nursing ceremonies:

PinningSchools pin unique badges on graduates

Passing the lightlighting each others candles

Nurse Capsreceive cap when graduate; not really used anymore because of feminism inthe 1970 / 1980s

Nightingale pledgerecitation or reciting a modernised pledge

My new story idea didn't have a moral, and as hard as I tried to find one for it I couldn't . I

    researched some more morals:

we often despise what is most useful to us

It is useless attacking the insensible

Better starve free than die a fat slave

If you allow men to use you for your own purposes they will use you for theirs

A lair will not a believed even when he speaks the truth

Yield to all and you will soon have nothing to yield

Enemies promises were made to be broken

Never trust the advice of a man in difficulties

the grass isnt always greener on the other side

Slow and steady wins the race:

    My next story idea:

    cruise ships racing

Ship is worried because it is falling behind

Nurse sooths ship don't worry, just eat your beans

Later they pass the competing boatrun out of fuel

    Wins the race

Humans all get off safely and no one gets sued

That idea wasn't brilliant either. I tried for the grass isnt always greener on the other side moral:

nurse works in concrete tower block

Dreams about a life at sea

Changes to work on a boat

    Sea sick

Dealing with drunk sailors / tourists

    Sharks attack

    Changes back when she returns

the grass isnt always greener on the other side

This idea fit what I needed to do, and it wasn't the most exciting idea but I was happy to make it.

To be on the safe side I came up with a few more stories to fit existing morals:

don't cry wolf bored nurse crying shark / man overboard

we often despise what is most useful to usill passenger hates nurse so doesn't go see

her. Falls into the sea and cant swim, needs to be rescued

It is useless attacking the insensiblenurse trying to help injured passenger but they don't

    listen and fall over board

Better starve free than die a fat slaveruns away on a slave boat but starves

    InfluencesRudyard Kipling

I really enjoyed listening to Rudyard Kipling's fables because I hadnt heard them before.

Even though they go quite a long way round to explain the fable I feel its a really nice ad-

    venture with some great idea.

    19th Century Nave Art Research:

I created a mood board for my initial research, because Id never heard of Nave Art before.

There was quite a lot of variation as well so I focused a small few. I looked at Niko Pirosma-

ni for Human reference. I looked at Alfred Wallace and James Bards work on boats in the

ocean. Below: my studies of Alfreds Wallaces boat paintings.

    Nurse Character Designs

    Early character designs would be:

I was trying to draw a middle aged woman, who looked after herself and had

been through a lot. I wasnt sure whether to go with old style nurses, but decid-

ed against it in the end because it wouldn't fit with the cruise ship.

I liked having the big bum because it seemed to fit more, then by giving her sharp legs it

would give her dynamics. I wanted to make it believable that she would actually leave a

stable job to work on a cruise ship. Sharpe legs and rounded hips seemed like a nice

    combination.

Some colour variations. I wanted to try the best match to the nave art

style. In the end I went with acrylic (middle); because it seemed to stand

out nicely and be quite match the bold colours of nave artists.

    Other Characters

Ive tried to make all the

    characters animals, simp-

    ly to follow the fable

trend, I feel I can relate

    quite well to personified

    animal characters.

Background DesignsI decided to use watercolour to colour my backgrounds. This is because not a lot of

detail was needed and I didn't want to distract from the foreground images. For a few

Ive got the perspective wrong but I think that adds to the nave art theme, my own

    nave drawing skills.
