Your Path to the Future! You have probably heard this word a lot lately: Change. Industry change. Political change. Company change. Personal change. How is all of this change impacting the future of your business? What is all of this change we talk and hear about?! What does this mean for me, my company, my life? We hope you find some of those answers at the 2017 ADS International Convention & Tradeshow. Even here there is a lot of change. There are new seminars, new speakers, new trainings, new formats, new information, new friends, new colleagues.

Why Should I Attend the ADS International Convention & Tradeshow?

Diesel Exhaust Aftertreatment… do you understand?

We get this question quite a bit here at ADS headquarters. Here are our top eight reason why we think you should attend this one-of-a-kind event. DPFs have had their share of bad

press. Michael Oliveros of Williams Diesel Service in Ocala, Fla. talks about how his company turned something no one liked to deal with into a great teaching moment.

20 BuzzwordBuzzword is defined by Google as “a word or phrase, often an item of jargon that is fashionable at a particular time or in a particular context.” Drive-In Service seems to be a buzzword starting to dominate our industry over the past few years.

Here is a real discussion directly from the ADS Online Forum:

Case: 2011 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins with Code P226C before and after turbo replacement

March 14

We have the above truck in our shop and with the diagnostic tree it points to turbo VGT sticking issues. We replaced the Turbo with a Reman turbo that has a new Actuator.

The truck has the same symptoms which is the VGT rapidly trying to cycle back and for as well as setting P226C. Also, the customer has said it has derated I believe.

We hardly think we have 2 turbo failures back to back but I guess it could. The truck had a H&S tuner on it when it arrived with the DPF removed. Customer has been running it that way for a while without problems. We did however decide to return to stock to see what would happen. Still no change only a lot more codes because emissions system not hooked up.

I did see though a U010C turbo communication now pending with returned to stock.

Has anyone found a reliable off engine turbo alignment tool for these Holset units that even could be used for a simple VGT sweep test on engine?

Since starting this post we had another known good used turbo which we hooked up and still is cycling the vgt back and forth. Obviously, another issue but what?

Any thoughts?

March 14

You might check the VGT fuse # 37 if it is blown it can cause a similar symptom .

March 15

We checked and there is a different Fuse # that powers the VGT.

However, it is okay. Any more ideas?

March 16

Does the cycling only happen after a minute with the KOEO? Is the actual VGT position stuck at one value when driving? To me the issue seems to be a corrupted CAN Bus.

Tuners on these trucks are notorious for not reporting DTCs correctly. I believe the U010C is pointing you in the right direction. A scope would help to determine if the signal is your issue.

March 16

We repaired a 2012 Dodge with these DTC Codes with a new turbo installed.

• U011A

• P226C

• U010C

The problem was the wiring at the Exhaust Gas O2 module, was pulling down the J1939 circuits D130 and D131. I know this truck is modified and most likely the O2 model has been removed, but check the wiring.

In addition, when I have turbo problems, performance problems and exhaust problems on a Cummins 6.7L. We always clean the EBP sensor tube and check the EBP sensor for carbon build up. If the inlet of the EBP sensor is plugged or restricted with carbon replace it, don’t clean it.

ur 2017 International Convention & Tradeshow’s theme is “Navigating Your Path to the Future.” It seems our industry is always in a state of change and we find ourselves making

changes in direction on a regular basis. I recently saw a presentation discussing how some companies like Kodak, Blockbuster, and Radio Shack, which were very well known, high profile companies, have all filed bankruptcy in the last few years. It appears market changes may have gone unnoticed by some of these companies or if noticed, little or incorrect actions were taken.

In many industries, change is almost a constant thing. Our association’s base members are our service dealers. As a service dealer, we see our businesses changing almost daily. In past decades, we have all focused on labor intensive products, where we purchase parts and labor, to create a product to sell to our customers. Fuel injection pumps, injectors and turbochargers were not all we did, but represented most of our business. As we all know, that is slowly changing. The ability of local fuel injection shops to rebuild today’s fuel injection systems and turbochargers becomes harder every year. So, we find ourselves faced with selling more items we purchase in a box and sell in a box. There is not the diversity of products we saw in past decades. Additionally the cost of products has increased so much that other types of companies want to sell these products. A

lot of the items we sell can be purchased from non-traditional suppliers such as an auto parts store, internet suppliers, and even the dealer networks. This sometimes leaves local fuel and turbo shops out of the loop. Some dealers that used to be our best customers are now our competitors. These factors have a direct effect on our businesses. Not every service dealer answers these changes in the same way.

Some of us have worked ourselves into the drive-

in service business. In some cases, we can

find other products to sell and replace lost business. In all cases, we have to change the way we do business to keep moving forward.

It seems at every ADS Convention &

Tradeshow, I find some information or new product

that alters our company’s Path to the Future. I know in the last

few years it has become more and more important to network with other service dealers and find out how they are finding their Path to the Future. Our company’s Path to the Future, has involved changes in several directions. We must aggressively pursue change to keep our companies navigating to the future. At some point I think we have all found ourselves at a crossroad and looking for direction. Every year I find that Path to the Future direction at our ADS Convention & Tradeshow. I look forward to having you join me in Las Vegas, August 8-11.

From the Executive Director

David FehlingADS Executive Director

n just a few short weeks I’ll be at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada at the 2017 ADS International Convention & Tradeshow with you, the members

of ADS. Of course, I am looking forward, as I always do, to meet many of you in person. Some of you reading this may be NEW MEMBERS of ADS, or perhaps individuals attending for the first time to see just what ADS is all about. I look forward to the opportunity to meet those new faces and offer some assistance, guidance and introduction to the valuable resources we have in the many people who choose to attend. Experience counts and ADS members in attendance are always open and willing to support and share information. What you learn at an ADS Convention can be priceless!

Consider who you will bring to the Convention and Tradeshow – You, the owner of the business, your Service Advisor, and/or your Technicians. Each one will benefit differently. Each member is a part of your team and can bring ideas and suggestions to allow your business to grow and succeed in the future. As ADS is an international association, you can meet with members from other countries who have different ideas to share and offer a variety of opportunities to grow your business.

Our industry is always changing; being in attendance offers you a perspective to see the future, the challenges, the opportunities, and the investment you are making for yourself, your employees and your company. You will have many opportunities during this event such as, meeting with peers and industry experts, but YOU have to make the most of those opportunities. Visit the Tradeshow, visit

exhibitor’s booths, talk to those who are in the booths and listen to the questions others are asking. What and how can those exhibitors help YOU in your business? For those under 40 years of age, consider participation in the Forerunners, where you will meet with others in your line of business with the same focus.

We have listened to you, our members, and made some changes again this year; we are now going to have three days open in the exhibit hall and have placed emphasis on training, per your requests. Training is lifelong learning, whether for your personal development, your company’s improvement and/or to keep you up to date with the industry. It is so important that ADS for the FIRST TIME, is offering a complete day of Duramax Training absolutely FREE to all with a full (PAID) 2017 Convention Registration. This is an investment for you and your technical employees, and for your company that will bring rewards and benefits for years to come. Additionally, we will have several training/technical seminars which will assist you and your business to be more competitive in the drive-in side of your business.

We have so much more for you at this upcoming convention, such as, for the first time, we will have an exhibitor displaying and demonstrating 3-D printing, exhibitors from major OEM’s and Turbo Manufacturers, as well as so much more! I encourage you to review the Convention program and take a look at all the exhibitors attending, some new ones as well as many of our regulars.

I look forward to seeing you in August at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

Customer Service and Growth Go Together

am Logan Perkins, and I am currently pursuing a degree in business at Chattanooga State Community College. I work for Diesel Plus in Ringgold, Ga.,

when I am not attending class. My short-term goal is to learn as much as possible about the three business units that make up Diesel Plus. My long-term goal is to own and manage Diesel Plus. My plate is full.

Diesel Plus was established by my father, Mike Perkins, and his business partner, Lamar Neal, in 2001. It is made up of three separate business units under one roof. Those three units are: part sales, drive-in service and fuel shop.

Initially, Diesel Plus was to be a full-service fuel shop only. The drive-in service was born after customers asked about installation, and it quickly grew into the primary revenue stream for Diesel Plus. A remodel was done in 2012 enlarging it from six bays to 12.

Several factors have slowed our fuel shop business, probably the same factors that have eroded yours. Cheaper foreign made pumps, lack of rebuild parts and low ROI on new equipment. Currently, our biggest fuel shop customer is drive-in, which gives us an edge over our competitors. That’s not a bad thing.

Drive-in service gave birth to our parts department. We are dealers for many brands including Bosch, Garrett, Alliant, Isuzu and more. I work at the counter most days and travel twice a month visiting part/fuel shop customers. During our monthly strategy meetings, we use the information gathered on these trips to analyze our business. We gauge the health of our business relative to others with similar services to ours. Part sales can be an

indicator of the general business climate, and we must ask ourselves a couple of questions: Where do we range in pricing? Are we too high? Are we too low? Are new competitors entering the market? I was told that you have two ears and one mouth, so use them proportionally. Be a good listener and your customers will give you the information you need.

Drive-in is now the primary business for Diesel Plus. We maintain and grow this with one goal in mind, which is to be a one stop shop. We added Hunter alignment and tire equipment in order to accomplish this. We partnered with a company that does upholstery replacement and repair, and we recently partnered with a company to install windshields.

All of this is great, but the key component is people. Finding and retaining well-trained workers is vital to our sustainability and achieving our long-term goals.

Where do you find qualified, reliable technicians???? I bet you have this problem as well…

We addressed this issue by starting a program with our last two hires. The idea was to find young people entering the market and offer them a livable starting wage. We would then train and develop them into the technician that we needed them to be: diversified and tech savvy.

Retention? We offer a four-day work week. That has been a home run for us. Not everyone is motivated by dollars. A work/home life balance is worth more than money to most. There is also a cost saving to us by using a four-day week.

ou have probably heard this word a lot lately: Change. Industry change. Political change. Company change. Personal change. How is all of this change impacting the future of your business? What is all of this change we talk and hear about?!

What does this mean for me, my company, my life? We hope you find some of those answers at the 2017 ADS International Convention & Tradeshow. Even here there is a

lot of change. There are new seminars, new speakers, new trainings, new formats, new information, new friends, new colleagues.

Many have asked for more training year after year. This year we are excited to offer a FREE training to all paid registrants. Tuesday you can get a full day of Duramax training presented by Tony Salas. He will cover changes made with the newer Duramax Diesels used on the Silverado, GMC Sierra and the TopKick and Kodiak GM trucks, with a brief review of the Duramax Diesel 6.6L, from the LB7 to the LLY and the LBZ. Instruction will focus on the LMM, LML and the LGH. Topics included are Turbocharger, Common Rail Fuel Injection System, DOC/DPF 101, DEF Fluid 101, EGR, Engine and Electronics, and a review of engine service issues, what to look for in service of the engine, head gasket replacement, lower engine rebuilding and cooling system service procedures. You won’t want to miss this valuable information and the opportunity to gain more knowledge on this popular system.

In addition to this all-day training, there will also be five other training seminars during the Convention. Topics include DPF Cleaning, Ford Powerstroke, and Why New Parts Fail. If you have ever wondered if it would be worth it to bring one of your guys in the shop, this year is the year to do it!

Peer-to-peer information sharing is a great way to get new ideas, help with a troublesome issue, or to just bounce ideas around to determine merit. To this end there will be

two panel discussions. The first will cover drive-in service and the second will concentrate on sales. Both panels are staffed with individuals from service member shops who have been in the business for decades. Combined, they have over 100 years of experience in the diesel industry. This is a lot of knowledge to draw from!

If you are an owner of a service member company, the ADS Business Committee has a special meeting for you. The Owners Collaboration Meeting is on Wednesday afternoon and focuses on owners of fuel injection shops and their specific challenges and needs.

You asked and we listened. This year the Tradeshow is back to three days. Included in this Tradeshow are first time exhibitors with metal 3-D printing capabilities and powertrain offerings. The ADS Turbocharger Committee has a booth focusing on common turbocharger failures and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to talk with manufacturers, suppliers and other leaders in the diesel industry.

The keynote speaker, Rich Ferguson of Ferguson Partners LLC, talks about the competitive service advantages for the independent aftermarket and focuses on the importance of uptime to the customer, building effective relationships and trust with both

suppliers and customers, the need for providers to understand telematics, and the impact on training and technology for the independent aftermarket to stay competitive. He also covers where to invest your time and money for potential growth, such as ongoing service and engine software training, helping increase your relevant offerings to your customers.

Networking opportunities still abound with the Get-Acquainted Reception in the Tradeshow Tuesday evening, a networking lunch on Wednesday, and the closing night Wild Shirt Event back at Intrigue. Forerunners, Canadian, and Latin American members have their meetings scheduled throughout the week, as well.

If you want to get more involved in the Association, committees meet on Tuesday afternoon. Please contact Lea Ann Reed at ADS headquarters for more information on what the committees do and to let us know if you would like to attend a meeting.

Your companions will also have a busy schedule. This year will mark the return of the Afternoon “Twisted” Tea hosted by Mrs. Sandra Fergueson, wife of ADS President, Carl Fergueson of Taylor Diesel of Nashville, Inc. This popular event gives companion attendees an opportunity to do their own networking. Companions also get admission to the Get-Acquainted reception and Closing Night event, as well as the Tradeshow and business seminars.

There is an optional tour of the Pahrump Valley Winery for companions. Nevada, with thousands of acres of barren desert, may seem like a strange place to have vineyards, and for most of the state that would be true. However, a small group of pioneers are making real progress in select areas and with certain grape varietals. Pahrump Valley Winery is located just a one hour drive from Las Vegas. Opened in 1990, owners Bill and Gretchen Loken like to say they “brought gold to the silver state.” It is now Nevada’s leading producer of Nevada Grown Wines with over 300 wine awards to cheer about. This informal tour will include transportation, tour of winery, wine tasting and lunch in Symphony Restaurant, named after their award-winning wine. The cost for this tour is $90.

ADS is committed to its mission to provide programs and service to its member that will assist them in achieving success in the operation of their businesses in the diesel industry throughout the world. This includes providing an international forum for all segments of the diesel industry to communicate, interact and share information, and assist members in acquiring and mastering the highest level of professional business management skills, encouraging the development of an adequate population of competent diesel technicians.

The 2017 ADS International Convention & Tradeshow is poised to help you Navigate Your Path to the Future. Don’t miss out on these unique and timely offerings to help your business grow and thrive in all of the change.

18 PRE-CONVENTION 2017

We get this questions quite a bit here at ADS headquarters. So here are our top eight reason why we think you should attend this one-of-a-kind event.

EXPERIENCE – The ADS International Convention & Tradeshow is the ONLY event dedicated to the service shops and related manufacturers in the

diesel fuel injection and turbocharger industry. It’s the place to be if you want to know what’s happening in the industry. Here is where you will find peers with the experience you may need to answer that nagging repair problem, how to expand the shop, or what you need to do to keep your best technician. Yes, you can ask Siri or utilize online forums, but you learn much more when you can have a one-on-one (or group) discussion about specific issues.

LEARNING – “Learning is a lifetime process, but there comes a time when we must stop adding and start updating.” ~Robert Brault. The

business management, technical and manufacturer seminars all supply information for adding or updating your knowledge. Listen and learn new ideas, systems, or practices that will help grow your profession or business.

ENHANCING – The ADS Tradeshow is the place to go to see, touch and learn about new products and services for expanding your business or

making contacts for business; compare products and services for current or future expansion; meet with owners or senior level management of the companies you do business with; and to see new product and equipment demonstrations.

COLLABORATION – There’s something magical about learning along with others, in a collaborative environment. Work together

with your peers to face the challenges of today, tomorrow and the future.

CELEBRATIONS – Come to socialize and have a good time, i.e., Get-Acquainted Reception and don’t forget the final night themed reception

– Wild Shirt Event! Enjoy the evening while discussing business. Casual conversations can be the

most informative when trying to find equipment, leads on a new supplier or just talking shop with a like-minded service dealer.

PARTICIPATION – What you get out of the Convention is up to YOU! How much you participate will have a direct impact on your

ROI.

CHANGE – Nobody likes change. However, if you think about it, change is part of our lives. We make changes every day – some small, some

large. Changing our clothes is something we do each day without thinking about change. So why is change so hard in the business world? One: we don’t have control. Our industry has changed and continues to change daily. Two: we don’t know the solutions. How to address today’s changes, and find solutions can be found at the ADS Convention. Whether your looking for products, ways to

uzzword is defined by Google as “a word or phrase, often an item of jargon that is fashionable at a particular time or in a particular context.” Drive-in service seems to

be a buzzword starting to dominate our industry. I looked for the definition of drive-in service and could not locate one so I will define it myself. Drive-in service is the service of diagnosing and repairing the vehicle, not just a small sub-system of the vehicle. An example would be installing injectors in the vehicle compared to just repairing the injectors for another shop to do the removal and installation. Drive-in service is an excellent addition to the revenue stream for an existing fuel shop. As our industry continues its metamorphosis, I and many others feel that all fuel shops will have to go this route to help maintain their businesses.

Let’s take a look at drive-in service from a 40,000-foot view. Shops that do drive-in vary greatly from city to city and shop to shop. These shops also vary greatly in size and equipment. The one thing not varying from the good drive-in service shop and your fuel shop is customer service and great employees. Many shops are full service making themselves a one stop shop for their customers. While other shops will only work on the diesel engine part of the vehicle.

When I say full service, I mean the shop handles all of the customers’ needs from alignments, suspension

work, engine performance, transmissions, upholstery, tires, and glass replacement. I say this not to mean they necessarily do all of that, but they have it handled by other business’s specializing in different types of repairs. We have a vendor doing upholstery repairs and another doing glass work for us at a rate that allows us to still make some money. This can also work for alignments as well as other repairs. We all have friends in other businesses we can network with. This approach works well when trying to retain your customers. One of the challenges to doing this effectively is finding and retaining technicians capable of meeting the demands you put on them. These techs do not come at a cheap price either. Therefore the hourly rates are climbing all the time. We have shops around us charging $90 per hour and shops charging $160 an hour and both stay busy. Another factor for these shops’ hourly rate is the cost of tooling, information systems, and programming cost.

Drive-in service can be very profitable and could be very costly if not properly managed. The costs of the repairs are escalating and you can’t be shy about telling a customer what the repair could cost. We have delivered estimates ranging from as low as $100 to more than $20,000. There is considerable labor on many of these tickets and the key to customer

The most advanced, powerful and efficient diesel equipment and technology for construction and industrial use was unveiled to the public March 7-11 at the international CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 convention.Big data, efficiency and the smart and connected jobsite are hot topics in the construction industry. Every one of those is built on the foundation of clean, efficient power provided by the most advanced diesel engines. CONEXPO is show-casing the latest innovations in diesel technology that ensure that the jobsites of the future are not only as efficient and productive as possible, but also will have the lowest environmental footprint, said Allen Schaeffer, the Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum.“President Trump and the U.S. Congress are touting a major infrastructure initiative in the near future,” Schaeffer said. “Infrastructure development largely translates into road and bridge construction, transportation facility as well as public water and waste water systems, and enhancements to telecommunications and utilities. Each of these activities is largely enabled through diesel-powered equipment.

“One of the greatest opportunities for the construction equipment sector now is simply to get more of the newer technology on the jobsite. Economic conditions over recent years have delayed the adoption of the newest, most efficient and near-zero emission clean diesel engines that have been available since 2014. Now there is a sense that economic conditions are improving and this industry is ready to unleash some of the most amazing, efficient and powerful machines that a successful national infrastructure plan would require.“Diesel has long been the technology of choice to power the world’s largest construction machines and to tackle the most difficult jobs. What we’re seeing here this week is the unveiling of the newest clean diesel technology for the workhorses of every type of construction project - wheel loaders, backhoes, excavators and bulldozers. These machines come in all shapes and sizes that are able to work in the smallest spaces or move the heaviest loads of material. These are the bread and butter of the construction industry, and the good news is that these machines are now more than 90 percent lower in emissions than a decade ago.”

Denso Products showcased a new line of PowerEdge aftermarket emissions control products at the Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week in Las Vegas in January. The products include diesel particulate filters and diesel oxidation catalysts, which are part of a new PowerEdge diesel aftertreatment line resulting from a partnership Denso and Clean Diesel Technologies. The products are manufactured by CDTi and distributed by Denso. The all-makes original equipment replacement program features 60 DPF part numbers covering more than 260 products and seven DOC part numbers for heavy-duty on-road and off-road trucks and equipment. The partner companies plan to expand the product line with an additional 20 DPF and 15 DOC part numbers later this year.

PowerEdge diesel aftertreatment replacement DPFs and DOCs are designed to match or exceed the emissions control performance and benefits of OEM replacement

units when installed in 2007 and newer heavy-duty diesel equipment. Features include high-grade stainless steel and other materials that increase durability by resisting corrosion and preventing failures; 100% OEM substrates that improve DPF performance and minimize backpressure, CDTi’s patented advanced coatings that increase catalyzation and regeneration efficiency; and “exact-fit” designs that include gaskets to meet specific application needs, reduce part numbers and streamline installation.

The turnkey DPFs and DOCs are approved for horizontal, vertical, and dual installation and backed by a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Many of the components are manufactured in the U.S. All part numbers meet strict EPA emissions control regulations and are available for purchase and installation in 49 states and Canada.

bout a year-and-a-half ago, we decided to branch out and diversify our company’s services/offerings by getting into Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning. We did some market analysis, purchased equipment, put

together a marketing campaign and set our salesman out to start visiting trucking fleets and dealers. Not long after, the DPF’s started rolling in and quickly our new equipment started paying for itself.

After a few weeks, I received a phone call from a customer we had cleaned his vehicle’s DPFs. The customer said, “You cleaned my DPF two weeks ago, and now the vehicle is saying its full again!” I asked him a few questions, one of them being “Are there any other fault codes being set?” He

replied, “Well yes, there are fault codes for EGR excessive flow, turbo under boost, and low fuel rail pressure… but those have been on for a month.” Before I could respond, he continued, “The driver has been complaining of low power and is having to do regenerations every 400 miles. These stupid DPFs keep plugging up and putting our trucks in limp mode...”. I interrupted him and went on to give him a quick lesson on how the aftertreatment system works and explained how the other issues are likely causing excessive soot which is prematurely plugging the DPF.

A week later I received a phone call from another DPF cleaning customer. This time the customer said, “You

Cummins fourth quarter 2016 revenues decreased 6% due to lower North America commercial truck production and weak global market conditions. Currency negatively impacted revenues by approximately 2% compared to the same period last year, primarily due to a stronger U.S. dollar. Revenues in North America decreased 13% while international sales improved by 6% primarily due to increased revenues in China. Net income attributable to Cummins in the quarter was $378M ($2.25/share), compared to $161M ($0.92/share) a year ago. Net income for the fourth quarter of 2015 excluding impairment and restructuring charges was $355M ($2.02/ share).

Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in the fourth quarter was $526M, or 11.7% of sales, compared to $230M or 4.8% of sales a year ago. Excluding impairment and restructuring charges, EBIT for the fourth quarter of 2015 was $531M or 11.1% of sales.

Revenues for the full year 2016 were $17.5B, 8% lower than 2015. Revenues in North America decreased 12% and international sales decreased 2% mainly due to foreign currency movements. Excluding the currency impact,

international revenues increased 2% with growth in China and India offset by weaker demand in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Net income attributable to Cummins for the full year was $1.39B ($8.23/share), compared to $1.4B ($7.84/share) in 2015. Excluding impairment and restructuring charges, net income was $1.59B ($8.93/share) in 2015.

Cummins projects full year 2017 revenues to be flat to down 5%, and EBIT to be 11.0-11.5% of sales. Results in the first quarter of the year will continue to be challenged by difficult markets and are expected to mark the low point of the year.

The Board of Directors of Cummins Inc. declared a quarterly common stock cash dividend of 1.025 dollars per share, payable on March 6, 2017, to shareholders of record on February 24, 2017.

Rhein: Cummins is feeling the effects of the heavy truck downturn combined with a large engine recession in world markets. Like most diesel engine manufacturers, Cummins is looking at the end of 2017 to be the start of an upturn.

cleaned my DPF last week and we are still getting excessive NOX and DEF fault codes!” I said to him, “You know those faults have nothing to do with the DPF right?” His response was, “Well, it’s all part of the same dumb exhaust thing.” I sighed to myself and started explaining the differences between DPF and SCR to him. These type of phone calls have continued…

What we realized very quickly, was many (if not most) technicians do not understand the aftertreatment systems they are tasked with maintaining and working on. Furthermore, the service advisors and fleet managers understand even less. Management sees repair costs and vehicle down time rising and when they ask why, they are being told it’s because of all the emission “crap.” Automatically the modern diesel engine gets a bad rap, despite it being the most powerful, quiet, and clean version in its 125-year history. So, how do we counteract this, and right the so-called ship?

I did some research and found there are very few to no classes being taught on diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems. Next I went to some major fleets and asked them what training they have gone through for these systems. My fears were confirmed when they told me, “None.” In fact, they said that they don’t do anything to these systems until there’s an issue. I thought to myself, “No training and no maintenance?” No wonder everyone “hates” these systems. The technicians are not being taught how these systems work, they are not servicing them and when they break they don’t understand why. This especially hit home for the emergency, transit and refuge fleets. These customers were constantly bringing in DPF’s for cleaning that had cracked substrate and were covered in soot on the outlet (clean) side of the DPF, resulting in thousands of dollars being spent on replacement units.

Coming from the mentality of a diesel fuel injection shop, this was a bit of foreign territory for us. We’ve never really had to worry about teaching our customers how the pump or injectors worked and how to maintain them. Basically, all they had to know was, 1. Use clean fuel and 2. Change your filters. With the exhaust aftertreatment systems the variables were much greater. With these systems, how the vehicle is being used is directly tied to its maintenance. For instance, a school bus will follow a much different maintenance schedule than an over-the-road semi. Furthermore, since these systems reside in the exhaust stream, any engine issue resulting in excessive soot or contamination (coolant, oil,

etc.) in the exhaust stream may require cleaning of one or more of the aftertreatment components. So out of what we felt was a necessity, and at the request of several fleets, we decided to put together a training class on diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems.

The intention of this class was not only to teach how these systems work, but also how to properly maintain them. We designed the class for the technicians, as well as for fleet supervisors, parts departments and management. We felt it was imperative the decision makers understood how properly maintaining these systems saves money in the long run. The class is structured into two sections. The first part includes a detailed explanation of each major component and sub-component of the aftertreatment system and discusses their purpose, including the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, as well as all

“ancillary” components (sensors, reductant pumps, etc.). The second part is a detailed discussion on system maintenance and failure analysis. This includes recommendations on what items need to be serviced and when. One of the beauties of these aftertreatment systems is they are entirely scalable. The system works the same on a 15 liter Cummins ISX as it does on 2.0 liter Chevy Cruze. Because of this we were able to market the class to various types of fleets.

It didn’t take long. Word started to get around about the class and we started teaching it at major fleets and municipalities. The reception was excellent, and several fleets have even scheduled repeat/follow-up classes in six months. One of the most interesting things about the class, is watching the overall attitude of the technicians change during class. They almost always start with a smug and defensive position about the aftertreatment system… especially the DPF. Grumblings of “deletes” and “straight-

Caterpillar has announced it will locate what it says is a “limited group of senior executives and support functions” to what it is referring to as its “global headquarters” in the Chicago, Illinois, area later this year. At the same time, Cat reaffirmed “the ongoing importance of its presence in Peoria and Central Illinois,” but also said a previously announced headquarters complex in Peoria will now not be built. Caterpillar expects about 300 employees to be based in the new Chicago facility, which includes some positions relocated from Peoria. Reportedly among those moving is newly installed CEO Jim Umpleby, group presidents, a smattering of vice presidents, staff from the financial, legal and human resources departments, as well as support staff.

As a result of what it says are “continuing challenging market conditions and the need to prioritize resources to focus on growth,” the Peoria headquarters campus announced last March will not go forward. The current headquarters building will continue to be used for Caterpillar offices.

General Motors is expanding its portfolio of B20-capable vehicles to include cars and crossovers, and will field the industry’s most expansive lineup of diesel-powered vehicles in 2017, John Schwegman, director of commercial product and medium duty for GM Fleet, announced at the National Biodiesel Conference. Chevrolet offers the industry’s broadest lineup of B20-capable diesel propulsion for fleet, commercial and retail customers, including: Express full-size vans; Silverado HD full-size pickups; the Colorado mid-size pickup; the Low Cab Forward commercial truck; the 2017 Cruze compact car and the 2018 Equinox compact crossover.

GM also redesigned its Duramax 6.6L V-8 turbo-diesel offered on the 2017 Silverado HD. This next-generation engine offers more horsepower and torque than ever, an SAE-certified 445 hp and 910 lb.-ft., and 19% increase in torque over the current Duramax 6.6L. In 2018, Chevrolet will add a fifth diesel-powered truck line: a new Class 4/5 conventional cab truck being developed jointly with Navistar.

NETWORKING – We can’t say this enough. Networking is the number one reason YOU need to be at the ADS Convention each year. There is no other time or place where you can meet

and talk with so many of your peers, customers, suppliers, and friends who are all interested in the same thing you are….the diesel industry. Ask questions and learn from other members. They are likely doing something that could enhance your business. Also, don’t forget to share your ideas and knowledge. You never know when what you say just might help a fellow member.

Now that you know some reasons to attend, don’t miss out! Check out all the new offerings for 2017 in the schedule on page 14. Watch for updates and information in the weekly News@ADS or check diesel.org for the most up to date schedules, attendees, exhibitors, and more.

We look forward to seeing you in August!

Why Should I Attend the ADS International Convention & Tradeshow?

We have increased our benefits by offering up to 80 hours of paid time off for our employees. They can use these benefit hours for sick, personal or vacation time. We are investigating a new benefit package that will include short term disability and a 401 style retirement plan. Yes, there is a cost for these benefits, but employee churn, hiring and training are much costlier.

Quarterly, we cook out for our employees and customers. Everyone enjoys the fellowship, and the food helps build solid relationships inside our walls and out.

I have come to realize that business is complex and is constantly changing. I hope to use the knowledge and skills that I have gained throughout my schooling to effectively acquire new business and marketing strategies for Diesel Plus. I continue to learn about Diesel Plus, and I look forward to what the future holds in this evolving industry.

pipes” generally fill the room in the beginning. By the end of the class you can see their mindset change as they realize that it isn’t the DPF’s “fault.” In fact, they start to understand that the lack of maintenance is generally one of the largest contributors to premature failure. Now, this is not to say the aftertreatment systems do not have their inherent flaws and issues, they certainly do. These issues combined with a lack of technician understanding is a guaranteed recipe for disaster.

When ADS approached me about presenting this class during the International Convention I was excited. I believe exhaust aftertreatment knowledge and maintenance is a natural fit for our association. Like fuel injection, it’s another misunderstood part of the diesel engine, which also makes it

another niche market for us. On-highway vehicles have been equipped with DPF systems for the past 10 years and SCR systems are now entering their seventh year of production. The modern diesel engine has been growing more and more reliable in its latest generations, but these systems are still struggling. The lack of understanding by technicians coupled with “new” and complex technology leads to more vehicle down time, higher costs and worsening image of our industry. As members of an association dedicating itself to providing the highest level of service on diesel fuel injection and related systems, I believe it’s our duty to fully understand and support these systems. Sure, it’s not glamorous, but let’s face it, neither is fuel injection. I hope to see you all in Las Vegas at the show!

Diesel Exhaust Aftertreatment . . . Do You Understand?CONTINUED FROM PAGE 26

satisfaction is in the communication between the person talking to the customer and the customer. Explain to your customer what is entailed in the repair when there are large amounts of labor. Many times we make a repair seem simple when in fact it is a very tedious and time consuming. We have found that by detailing the repair on the repair order, the customer understands the labor involved, and the costs associated with it, better. Detailing this includes a concise summary of what had to be removed and replaced to complete the repair. An example would be:

Injector Replacement 03-07 Dodge: Remove Valve Cover, Lines And High Pressure Connectors, Rocker Arms And Remove And Replace Injectors. Install All Removed Parts And Torque To Factory Specifications. Test Drive.

Tightening Sequence:

• Install Fuel Injector Hold down Clamp (mounting Flange) Bolts. Do A Preliminary Tightening Of These Bolts To 5 Nm (44 In. Lbs.) Torque. This Preliminary Tightening Insures The Fuel Injector Is Seated And Centered.

• After Tightening, Relieve Bolt Torque, But Leave Both Bolts Threaded In Place.

• Install High-Pressure Connector and Retaining Nut. Do A Preliminary Tightening To 15 Nm (11 Ft. Lbs.) Torque.

• Alternately Tighten Injector Hold down Bolts To 10 Nm (89 In. Lbs.) Torque.

• Do A Final Tightening Of The High-Pressure Connector And Retaining Nut. Tighten To 50 Nm (37 Ft. Lbs.) Torque.

• Connect Injector Solenoid Wires And Nuts To Top Of Injectors. Tighten Connector Nuts To 1.25 Nm (11 In. Lbs.) Torque. Be Very Careful Not To Overtighten These Nuts As Damage To Fuel Injector Will Occur. Lubricate The Crossheads And Push Rod Sockets And Install The Rocker Arms And Pedestals In Their Original Locations. Tighten Bolts To 36 Nm (27 Ft. Lbs.) Torque.

A customer sees this and then is more understanding of the price being asked. In contrast if you just say” Replace injectors” this sounds like a simple repair only involving minimal labor.

Buzzwords come about for a reason. Many people are using them. The buzzword drive-in service can help lead to our favorite buzzword: Profit. I hope this helps anyone thinking of moving their business this direction. I look forward to seeing everyone in Vegas.

Vision We, the membership of The Association of Diesel Specialists, see ourselves as the leading international organization of professionals that provides sales and expert service for yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s diesel systems.

Our goal is to be the complete resource for training, technical service information, member promotion and networking opportunities. Our Association encourages participation at all levels of membership and is operated with the highest level of fiscal integrity. We embrace the economical, durable and clean diesel engine as one of the key elements for addressing global pollution and fossil fuel depletion.

MissionThe Association of Diesel Specialists’s mission is to provide programs and services to its members that will assist them in achieving success in the operation of their businesses in the diesel industry throughout the world.

Green Statement The Association of Diesel Specialists (ADS) believes in the future of clean diesel as part of an environmental solution to global greenhouse gas issues. ADS believes in the future of the inherently more efficient clean diesel power plant as a method of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. ADS applauds the work of engine manufacturers in their efforts to continuously reduce emissions in diesel engines to near infinitesimal levels. ADS believes that the use of clean diesel will improve the sustainability of consumers, businesses and communities by reducing the environmental and societal cost of their activities.

ADS does not condone the use of devices made to intentionally contravene emission controls for use in equipment or vehicles used on a regular basis. ADS believes that intentionally bypassing or altering emission controls in the name of performance enhancement undermines individual and group efforts to promote the use of clean diesel as a viable alternative power plant for the future.
