July 15-1615th Sunday in Ordinary TimeThis Sunday we hear the familiar story of the sower and the seed. In the end this parable is about abundance, God makes the seed bear fruit many times over. Mother Teresa once said “If you cannot feed 100 people, feed just one.” If we are fruitful recipients of the Word of God, how much will God multiply that good in the world? How does God’s word move us to share abundantly through a simple gesture of offering a package of crackers to the homeless or bringing food to a local pantry?

The Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle, founded by Cardinal Richard Cushing in 1958, is an international organization of diocesan mission-ary priests who volunteer a minimum of five years of their priestly lives to service in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. They were established by Cushing in response to the call by Pope John XXIII for members of the Catholic Church in economically favored nations to assist their fellow Catholics in Latin America.

Se establecieron por Cushing en respuesta al llamado por el Papa Juan XXIII para los miembros de la iglesia católica en las Naciones económicamente favorecidas para ayudar a sus compañeros católicos en América Latina.

Dear parishioners,

Both Father Amado and I recently celebrated the anniversary of our ordination. Father Amado received Holy Orders on July 9, 2016 and for me, July 11, 1987. We are grateful to Christ the High Priest for the gift of the priesthood and we are appreciative to you, the parishioners of Santa Cruz for the honor to serve as your priests. Please take a moment to look in the display case in the Narthex of the Church where we have each put a collection of photos and memorabilia from the day of our ordination.

Each story of the vocation of a priest is very special and intensely personal. How does one put into human language the supernatural calling from God who speaks, not through words, but directly as heart to heart? Both Father Amado and I received our vocation from the heart of God early in life, and we followed the call through different paths but to the same destination: The Altar. At each Holy Mass, the gift of our priesthood is renewed and Christ the High Priest gives himself truly to His flock.

There are many prayers composed over the centuries which appeal to God on behalf of priests, this is among the most beautiful:

Most lovable Jesus, today, the anniversary of the day on which even though I am unworthy you raised me to the dignity of the Priesthood through an impulse of your goodness, my heart is filled with joy and grateful memories because of the singular favor you conferred on me.

To my mind, as it reviews the past, there comes a brilliant light, even though it is somewhat obscured by darkness. You indeed, O Jesus, both in my light and my darkness shine by reason of your mercy. From my heart bursts, an exultant hymn of glory.

O Lord, as I acknowledge my unworthiness I earnestly ask for your continual help that I may be able to impart daily to your flock the richer fruits of your redemption. Thereby, may I be strong enough to continue on this mortal journey in a worthy manner, until my last day shall dawn, when having finished my earthly pilgrimage I may lay my weary head upon your breast and enjoy forever your light and peace.

Most Holy Virgin, you received on Calvary at the foot of the Cross, all priests under your maternal protection, pray for me. Amen.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Queridos Feligreses,

Ambos, el Padre Amado y yo, recientemente celebramos el aniversario de nuestra ordenación. El Padre Amado recibió sus órdenes sagradas el 9 de julio del 2016 y yo el 11 de julio de 1987. Estamos muy agradecidos a Cristo, el Sumo Sacerdote, por el don del sacerdocio y les agradecemos a ustedes, los feligreses de Santa Cruz por el honor de servir como sus sacerdotes. Por favor tome un momento para ver la exhibición, en el tablero de anuncios en el Nártex de la iglesia, donde ambos ponemos una colección de fotos y recuerdos del día de nuestra ordenación.

Cada historia de la vocación de un sacerdote es muy especial e intensamente personal. ¿Cómo puede uno poner en lenguaje humano el llamado sobrenatural de Dios que nos habla, no a través de palabras, sino directamente de corazón a corazón? El Padre Amado y yo recibimos nuestra vocación del corazón de Dios desde una edad temprana, y seguimos el llamado a través de diferentes caminos, pero hacia el mismo destino: el Altar. En cada Santa Misa se renueva el don de nuestro sacerdocio y es también cuando Cristo, el Sumo Sacerdote, se da verdaderamente a Su rebaño.

Hay muchas oraciones que se han compuesto durante los siglos cuales suplican a Dios en nombre de los sacerdotes, esta es una de las más bellas:

Adorable Jesús, hoy, el aniversario del día en el que, aunque soy indigno, me elevaste a la dignidad del Sacerdocio a través de un impulso de tu bondad, mi corazón se llena de alegría y de recuerdos agradecidos por el singular favor que has conferido sobre mí.

En mi mente, al repasar el pasado, hay una luz brillante, a pesar de que esta se oculta en cierto modo por la oscuridad. Oh Jesús, por Tu misericordia, verdaderamente brilla mi luz y mi oscuridad. De mi corazón estalla un exultante himno de gloria.

Oh Señor, al reconocer que, aunque no lo merezco, pido encarecidamente por tu continua ayuda para que yo pueda impartir diariamente los ricos frutos de Tu redención a tu rebaño. Asimismo, que pueda ser lo suficientemente fuerte para continuar de una manera digna en esta jornada mortal, hasta mi último día, al haber terminado mi peregrinaje terrenal pueda poner mi cabeza cansada sobre Tu pecho y disfrutar eternamente de Tu luz y paz.

Virgen Santísima, en el Calvario al pie de la Cruz, recibiste a todos los sacerdotes bajo tu protección maternal, ora para mí. Amén.

The story of Saint Maria Goretti is retold in this beautifully made film from Italy. It tells of the plight of the poor laborers of the time, struggling to survive in a swampy area with rampant malaria and extreme poverty. Luigi and Assunta Goretti keep their faith despite the hardship, and instill in their children a deep love for God. Their daughter Maria especially is devout. But tragedy strikes more than once: sickness and death affects the Goretti family, and then their young neighbor Alessandro does the unthinkable. This film, made on location and filled with authentic detail, stars Martina Pinto as Maria, Flavio Insinna (Saint John Bosco) as the brave local Passionist priest, Luisa Ranieri and Massimo Bonetti as her parents, and Claudia Koll as the Countess Mazzoleni.

Born in 1901 in Turin, Italy into a family of wealth and status, Pier Giorgio enjoyed good friends, hiking and skiing, museums and music, and was involved in political action. He found that deep prayer, service to the poor, and a passion for bringing others to Christ led to a life of purpose, peace, and happiness. Pier Giorgio died at the age of 24 on July 4, 1925. He was beatified on May 20, 1990 by Pope St. John Paul II who referred to him as a “man of the beatitudes”.
