Matthew 5:1-6 "16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16 7 "For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.” Romans 14:7-9 19 "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 9 "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10 STEWARDSHIP is the embrace of a divine trust (with joy and sobriety). “The first three beatitudes describe the Christian who is poor in spirit, mourns, and is meek. There is a common element among these characteristics. It is a recognition that what we are in the presence of God is what we are; no more, no less. Only such creatures belong to the Kingdom of God and receive the encouragement and comfort of his grace. Only such creatures have their mourning turned into dancing.” Sinclair Ferguson, Kingdom Life in a Fallen World, p. 31 1. “Poor in spirit” = an awareness of my sin. We cannot be filled until we are empty. “Whenever we find our religious life is making us feel that we are good – above all that we are better than someone else – I think that we may be sure that we are being acted on, not by God, but by the devil. The real test of being in the presence of God is either you forget about yourself altogether or see yourself as a small and dirty object. It is better to forget about yourself altogether.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, p. 112 “As each man is stung by the consciousness…for as there exists in man something like a world of misery, and ever since we were stripped of the divine attire our naked shame discloses an immense series of disgraceful properties every man, being stung by the consciousness of his own unhappiness, in this way necessarily obtains at least some knowledge of God. Thus, our feeling of ignorance, vanity, want, weakness, in short, depravity and corruption, reminds us, (see Calvin on John 4:10) that in the Lord, and none but He, dwell the true light of wisdom, solid virtue, exuberant goodness. We are accordingly urged by our own evil things to consider the good things of God; and, indeed, we cannot aspire to Him in earnest until we have begun to be displeased with ourselves.” John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 1 2. “Mourn” = to grieve over those things which break the heart of God. “To mourn is something that follows of necessity of being poor in spirit. It is quite inevitable. As I confront God in his holiness and contemplate the life I am meant to live, I see myself, my utter helplessness and hopelessness. I discover my quality of spirit and immediately that makes me mourn. I must mourn about the fact that I am like that. But obviously it does not stop there. A man who truly faces himself and examines himself and his life is a man who must of necessity mourn for his sins also for the things that he does.” Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Sermon on the Mount, p. 58 3. “Meek” = true view of myself “What then is meekness? Meekness is essentially the true view of oneself, expressing self in attitude and conduct with respect to others. It is therefore two things. It is my attitude towards myself; and it is an expression of that in my relationship to others…when I have that true view of myself in terms of poverty of spirit and mourning because of my sinfulness, I am led on to see that there must be an absence of pride…The man who is meek is not even sensitive about himself. He is not always watching himself and his interests, he is not always on the defensive…Self-pity! What hours and years we waste in this!...The man who is truly meek is the one who is amazed that God and man could think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do. That, it seems to me, is the essential quality.” Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Sermon on the Mount, pp. 68-69 “There is probably no more beautiful quality in a Christian than meekness. It enhances manliness; it adorns femininity. It is a jewel polished by grace. But it is all too rare. Is that because so few of us know what it is to be poor in spirit and to mourn for our sins?” Sinclair Ferguson, Life in a Fallen World, p. 41 4. 1+2+3 = hunger and thirst for righteousness/empowering. Questions for Discussion: 1. Define stewardship from a biblical perspective. (See Romans 14, 1 Corinthians 6, and 1 Peter 2) 2. Explain: “you cannot be filled until you are empty”. 3. What is biblical mourning? 4. What were some life lessons Moses learned from 40 years of shepherding in the desert? 5. What are “places of brokenness”? (Mentally note some of yours.) 6. Why do the first three beatitudes lead to an embrace of the fourth? *Since Roe v. Wade in 1973 we have aborted 57,000,000 babies in the USA. Why would we say: “I hate Sanctity of Human Life Sunday”? WE ARE AT 72% OF REACHING OUR GOAL OF $350,000. THERE ARE 3 DAYS LEFT TO GIVE.
