It is impossible to become the person God desires without the active use of spiritual disciplines. In sports, the athlete trains daily so that when the actual contest occurs, his or her training takes over and yields a higher performance. How many times in an interview has one said, “I knew I could do it. I have practiced it hundreds of times in the past. I simply relied on what I have already done.” Practice does make perfect. In the book of Ephesians, Paul pressed home this concept encouraging the church to mature in faith “to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine…but speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:13-15). As we gather for worship, ask yourself where God would have you to grow. In your prayer life? Maintaining Sabbath? Understanding of Scripture? Participation in Worship? Fasting? Solitude? If practice makes perfect and if we can’t become the person God desires of us without them, then what spiritual discipline needs to be recaptured? I invite you this morning to become a more disciplined person. Dear God, let it be.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

    The Call to Prayer

Take this moment to prepare to speak to the One who is more focused upon our hearts than upon our words. One who is more committed to us and our soul’s well being than we are to our body’s comforts and pleasures. Free yourself in these moments from your fear-filled secrets by prayerfully confessing them in the presence of our Heavenly Father.
