FOREWORD
Language connects everything; it is how we are with the world, the way we reveal
ourselves and give directives. Equally, it is the medium by which we dialogue
inwardly. Communication is everything. It’s true goal is to educate and uplift -
it is the tool by which we create reality.
Embedded in language is the universal sound current called Naad. It speaks of
source and is naturally creative, blossoming forth, life affirming. Naad under-
pins the sacred language, the Gurmukhi of the Sikhs that Yogi Bhajan introduced
us to. Whispering, chanting, enunciating, it transforms and heals.
What if language was the hand that helped us across the rough patches of life.
Could love in language be the very cosy, smiling manner by which mind speaks to
itself? It frames the experience and love of God. Patwant creates mentally heal-
ing poetry with a playful and precise inner dialogue. Feel the harmony in it, try
it out both loud and in ruminating whispers. Interspersed are essential kriyas
(a complete set of exercises that are performed in a sequence with a specific out-
come) that back up good words with the silent space whence such words are born.
Good company for the journey of life!

PRANA
‘Pra’ means constant, ‘Ana’ means movement. your Prana is essentially your life
force energy. We draw Prana into our bodies through consicous breath and all
elements of nature: seawater, rivers, sunlight, wind, forests, mountains, rocks
and earth. Prana expands you, enlivens you, re-energises you, heals and balances
you. It refuels your body and being with infinite energy. It brings clarity and
alertness. It harnesses and holds the energy of the atom. Prana allows us to
connect, align and flow with the divine rhythms of our lives, the divine rhythms
of our souls.
Interspersed between the poetry you will find short Kryia’s and Meditation’s
from Kundalini Yoga as taught by the Master of Kundalini Yoga, the Siri Singh
Sahib, Yogi Bhajan, for you to explore deeper if you choose.
Kundalini Yoga is know as the Yoga of Awareness and aims at balancing and inte-
grating mind, body and soul.
TUNE IN BEFORE PRACTICE
Before each Kryia or Meditation we chant the Adi Mantra : ONG NAMO GURU DEV
NAMO
The mantra means :
Ong Namo : Infinite Creative Consciousness I bow to you
Guru Dev Namo : Wise, infinite, subtle, divine teacher that transforms, I bow to
you
This mantra assists the limited self to dissolve in order for all that is divine,
wise and infinite to flow through us.

Prosperity Meditation : Gurprasad
Guru is that guidance which takes you from darkness to light. Gurprasad means
Guru’s
Grace or Blessing; given by the grace of the Guru.
Excerpts from a lecture given by Yogi Bhajan, May 7th, 1989.
‘Somebody gives you Prasad in the Gurdwara, and I have seen fingers going like
this (demonstrates somebody asking to be served just a tiny amount of prasad).
And I see you in Al Gelato (an upscale Los Angeles ice cream palour) eating this
big ice cream.
I absolutely have no mind to understand what you are doing. I have absolutely
no idea. I feel like you, within that moment when you do this (making the sign
for just a little prasad), have shipped me to Mars or Venus or somewhere. This
is very contrast of a human. And I also see you in Al Gelato with this ice cream,
with whipped cream, with raisins, and those nuts - you want it bigger and bigger.
Something goes wrong with you.
But just remember, if Gurprasad is Gurprasad, then accept it as it is given. And
accept it with such devotion that it can open the faculty, it can open your path.
These eyes of ours are only there to read sign boards, but these eyes can also see
the great creativity of God.’
19
Posture : Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine. With your upper arms close to
your sides, bring your hands to the level of the heart with hands side-by-side
and cupped (the way you are receiving prasad)
Eyes : Eyes are one-tenth open and focused on the tip of the nose.
Mental focus : Allow all the blessings of heaven to flow to you, ask for whatever
you need; know yourself to be blessed; feel the boundless flow of spirit.
Time : There was no time given for this meditation. We suggest starting with 3-11
minutes and working up to 31 minutes.
Prasad : Guru’s gift (often meaning blessed food); in the Sikh tradition, a pudding
made of flour, ghee (clarified butter), and honey.
Gurdwara : Sikh temple or place of worship, the ‘gate of the Guru’
Easy Pose : A comfortable, cross legged, sitting position, Sukhasana 20

Basic Breath Series
Eye focus for all exercises : Close the eyelids. Press the eyes up gently and
focus at the Brow Point (the top of the nose where the eyebrows meet).
1. Left Nostril Breathing. Sit in Easy Pose. Rest the left hand in Gyan Mudra
(touch the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger). The left arm is
straight on the left knee. Raise the right hand in front of the face with the
palm flat facing to the left. The fingers of the hand are together and point
straight up. Press the side of the thumb on the right nostril to gently close it.
Begin long, deep, complete yogic breaths through the left nostril. Inhale and
exhale only through the left nostril. Continue for three minutes. Inhale and
hold comfortably for ten to thirty seconds, exhale and relax.
2. Right Nostril Breathing. Sit in Easy Pose. Rest the right hand in Gyan Mudra.
Raise the left hand in front of the face with the palm flat facing to the right.
The fingers of the hand are together and point straight up. Press the side of
the thumb on the left nostril to gently close it. Begin long, deep, complete,
yogic breaths through the right nostril. Continue for three minutes. Inhale and
hold comfortably for ten to thirty seconds, exhale and relax.
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing. Sit in Easy Pose, with the spine relaxed and
straight. Make Gyan Mudra with the left hand. Rest the left hand over the
left knee. Close the eyelids. Press the eyes up gently and focus at the Brow
Point (the top of the nose where the eyebrows meet). Block the right nostril with
the thumb. Press just hard enough to close the nostril. Keep the rest of the
fingers straight up. Inhale deeply through the left nostril. When the breath
is full, bend the right hand into a “U” extending the little finger tip over to
press on the left nostril. Close the left nostril and let the right nostril open
by releasing the thumb pressure. (You can also use the thumb and index finger.)
Exhale smoothly and completely through the right nostril. When the breath
is completely exhaled, begin the cycle again with the inhale through the left
nostril.
Continue for three minutes with long, deep, regular breaths. Inhale at the end
and hold the breath for ten to thirty seconds. Exhale and relax.
23
4. Alternate Nostril Breathing. Repeat exercise #3, except use the left hand to
direct the inhale through the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril.
5. Breath of Fire. Sit in Easy Pose with both hands in Gyan Mudra. Begin a
powerful, regular, and conscious Breath of Fire. Continue for seven minutes.
Then inhale and hold the breath for ten to sixty seconds. Mentally watch the
energy circulate through the entire body. Relax the breath and concentrate on
the natural flow of the breath as life force for three minutes. Notice how your
mind and emotions have changed.
6. In the same posture, meditate, inhale deeply and chant Long SAT NAAM’s
continue three to fifteen minutes.
COMMENTS
This set gives you a quick lift in energy, increased clarity, and a sense of
balance. If you do the minimum times for each exercise, it only takes twenty-
two to twenty-five minutes to completely reset yourself. It is an excellent set
for beginners. You learn the relationship to the breath and you observe the
differences in emotion and thinking that each type of breathing creates.
Even though breathing is the most natural and essential thing we do, conscious
breathing can be quite a challenge. When you alter the breath you begin to op-
pose and release the habitual patterns of emotion and attention that are coded
in the habits of your body and mind. As those patterns begin to alter, you may
drift in concentration or interest. If you continue and command the breath, then
you will gain a new sense of ease and control where you direct your mind. This
Kriya is excellent to practice as a preparation for a more strenuous Kundalini
Yoga set. It can be practiced in beginning and advanced stages. As a beginner,
use the times listed above. For intermediate level practice, do exercise one
through four for five minutes each. For an advanced practice, increase the times
of one through four to a full ten minutes each.
24
What is Breath of Fire?
Breath of Fire is rapid, rhythmic, and continuous. It is equal on the inhale and
the exhale, with no pause between them. (approximately two to three cycles per
second)
It is always practiced through the nostrils with mouth closed, unless stated
otherwise.
Breath of Fire is powered from the navel point and solar plexus. To exhale, the
air is expelled powerfully through the nose, by pressing the navel point and
solar plexus back toward the spine. This feels automatic if you contract the
diaphragm rapidly.
To inhale, the upper abdominal muscles relax, the diaphragm extends down, and
the breath seems to come in as part of relaxation rather than through effort.
The chest stays relaxed and slightly lifted throughout the breathing cycle.
When done correctly, there should be no rigidity of hands, feet, face or abdomen.
Begin practicing Breath of Fire for the duration of one to three minutes. Some
people find it easier to do Breath of Fire for a full ten minutes right away.
Others find the breath creates an initial dizziness or giddiness. If this happens,
take a break. Some tingling, traveling sensations, and lightheadedness are
completely normal as your body adjusts to the new breath and new stimulation of
the nerves. Concentrating at the brow point may help relieve these sensations.
Sometimes these symptoms are the result of toxins and other chemicals released
by the breath technique. The symptoms may be relieved by drinking lots of water
and changing to a light diet.
Breath of Fire is not hyperventilation, nor is it Bellow Breath.
There are restrictions for doing Breath of Fire while pregnant and menstruating.
25
Benefits of Breath of Fire:
Releases toxins and deposits from the lungs, mucous linings, blood vessels, and
other cells.
Expands the lung capacity and increases vital strength.
Strengthens the nervous system to resist stress.
Repairs the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous sys-
tems.
Strengthens the navel chakra.
Increases physical endurance and prepares you to act effectively.
Adjusts the subtle psycho-electromagnetic field of the aura so that the blood
becomes energized.
Reduces addictive impulses for drugs, smoking, and bad foods.
Increases oxygen delivery to the brain, facilitating a focused, intelligent, and
neutral state of mind.
Boosts the immune system and may help prevent many diseases.
Promotes synchronization of the biorhythms of the body’s systems.
This Kriya is excellent to practice for a more strenuous Kundalini Yoga set. It
can be practiced in beginning and advanced stages. As a beginner, use the times
listed above. For intermediate level practice, do exercises one through four for
five minutes each. For advanced practice, increase the times of one through four
to a full ten minutes each.

Exercise Set for the Lungs and Bloodstream
In Easy Pose with a straight spine, holding the knees, inhale completely,
stretching the ribcage to the maximum (do not sip more air in later, and don’t
leak). Place the tongue against the back of the upper teeth at the roof of the
mouth, and flex the relaxed spine rapidly until you can no longer hold the
breath in, and then exhale smoothly. Gradually increase the time of breath
retention to one minute. Continue for 11 minutes. All breathing is through the
nose.
COMMENTS
This is an excellent exercise to build stamina, make the blood suck up oxygen
from the lungs, and help the heart muscles regulate and reorganize themselves.
It pressures the kidneys, gonads and adrenals. It is necessary to hold a full
inhale for a full minute to supply optimum oxygen to the blood stream. When
less oxygen is available, the brain, organs and glands function poorly and
systems break down causing illness.
This exercise, done for eleven to twenty-two (maximum) minutes a day will totally
purify the bloodstream. If you do it for twenty-two minutes, rest after the first
eleven minutes, and then continue.

Invoking a Meditative State
Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine.
Mudra: Make a solid fist of the right hand and raise it up to shoulder level
with the forearm parallel to the spine. Raise the left hand up until the wrist
is at shoulder level and the forearm is parallel to the spine. Bend the wrist
so that the palm faces upward and the fingers point to the left. The fingers are
straight and the palm is flat.
Consciously hold the hand positions. The left hand will want to move from its
position, but keep it steady.
Honest effort will bring the best results in experience.
Eyes: Look at the tip of the nose.
Breath: Inhale deeply in a long, slow, complete manner. Completely exhale with
the same kind of conscious, controlled breath. Hold the breath out to your
maximum; when you can no longer hold the breath out without straining, inhale
deeply. Continue this breath pattern.
Time: Begin with eleven minutes and slowly and gradually build up to a maximum
of thirty-one minutes.
To End: Rapidly inhale and exhale twice (two seconds inhale, two seconds exhale)
and then inhale, hold the breath in for ten seconds, and stretch both hands up
and tighten the body. Exhale and relax.
Kundalini Yoga is a systematic method of glandular control through which the
pituitary’s relationship with consciousness is stimulated to invoke a meditative
state in us.
Just experience this meditation. It affects the pituitary and glandular system
and its impulsion of clockwise and anti-clockwise spin.
34
COMMENTS
The mind and emotions will keep repeating unless interrupted. The stress
you generate with each thought, even subconsciously, narrows and binds you
to a reactive pattern. This meditation helps you to gain mastery over your
experience and breaks through the mystery of why things happen to you. It
gives you strength, and the ability to engage openly in the challenges of life so
they become opportunities; markers along the way to expressing your soul’s true
purpose. Stop rejecting life out of fear and begin to see how the Infinite
reveals itself to you in each moment, each relationship, and each word.

37
Sitali Pranayama
Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bhand. Roll the tongue into a “U”
with the tip just outside the lips.
Breath: Inhale deeply through the rolled tongue, exhale through the nose.
Time: Continue three minutes. Alternatively, you can practice this twenty-six
times in the morning and twenty-six times in the evening. One hundred and eight
repetitions is a deep meditation and a powerful healer for the body and diges-
tive system.
Comments:
This pranayam gives power, strength and vitality. It can have a cooling,
cleansing effect. Initially the tongue tastes bitter, and will eventually become
sweet. 38
Neck Lock (Jalandhar Bandh)
This is the first, most basic and most generally applied of the locks. It is a
general rule to apply it in all chanting meditations and during most pranayama
exercises. Whenever you are holding the breath in or out, it is usually applied
unless instructed otherwise.
To apply Neck Lock:
Sit comfortably with the spine straight.
Lift the chest and sternum upward.
At the same time, gently stretch the back of the neck straight by pulling the
chin toward the back of the neck.
The head stays level and centered, and does not tilt forward or to either side.
The muscles of the neck and throat remain loose. Keep the muscles of the face
and brow relaxed.
The stretch is automatically applied by the shift of relative position between
the chin and chest. Do not force the head forward or down. That will only result
in a sore neck.
What the Neck Lock achieves:
It seals the energy that is generated in the upper areas of the brain stem.
It prevents undue changes in blood pressure that can sometimes be induced by
exercise and breathing. It acts as a safety valve that regulates that pressure by
reducing
dizziness that can result from a practice.
It is easier to focus on internal sensations and perceptions without distraction
from the peripheral senses when you hold this lock.
It creates nerve reflexes that stimulate and balance the thyroid and
parathyroid glands.
It directs the flow of pranic energy into the central channel past the neck
and in the central channel relative to the heart. Without the neck lock, the
pranayama energy could flow to the ears or eyes or other places. With the lock,
the heart is calmed and the flow of energy is natural.39
Helps contain the energy of the Moon Center at the chin.
In the yogic texts it is emphasized that this lock prevents the nectars of
the brain from dispersing too quickly. The word jala refers to the brain and
its watery secretions; dhar is the upward pull or open gate. Jalandhar is
the upward pull that opens the gate to the brain’s watery nectars. In Yogi
Bhajan’s terminology, the higher glands of the brain - pituitary, pineal, and
hypothalamus - are stimulated in certain practices to secrete hormones and to
form a communicative relationship to each other. When the pituitary secretes, it
is referred to as “the turning of the lotus of the moon.” It was represented as a
cooling flow that would mix with the heated energy from the navel area and the
lower nerves.
By applying this lock there is an increased concentration of those secretions
that allows a new level of interrelatedness between the glands. There
are potentials in the mostly dormant pineal that can only be awakened by
concentrating the “nectar of the moon.”
Fortunately this lock is a simple systematic practice that gradually leads to
opening that special connectedness.

Maya
I write your name across the sky with the pulse of my heart
with a pure song in my breasts
with invisible ancient manuscripts
inscribed on my skin
I roll and wrap you in gold tinted light
whisper infinite truths
into the indigenous roots of your soul
We dance and laugh like thunder in the rain
like seasoned warriors we dive into our battles headstrong
When you dip deeply into the solace and magic of your dreams
I pour amulets of peace into the space that occupies your heart
From my core I call legions of angels to stand by your side
to guard you with each step
in each breath
I look into your eyes
as I have done before
in distant lifetimes before this one
and remind you
41
for you know
that to harness and unleash your most magnificent blazing power
you must find your home in your skin
live every breath from your purpose that can only be your own
I will keep repeating the secret mantra of mothers
live your truth
trust your gut
your knowing
your gifts
You are so exquisitely beautiful
be who you are out of the shadows
boldly facing the sun
In every moment
deeply inhale the sacredness of your life in
let every miraculous breath count
For you are blessed to be in the flesh of a woman
42
This practice opens the heart center
and the feelings of the positive self.
It is a gesture of happiness. It has
a great history and is said to have
been practiced by many great and wise
spiritual leaders including Buddha
and Christ. The hand mudra became a
symbol for blessing and prosperity.
Sit with an erect spine. Curl the ring
finger and little finger into each palm.
Bend the thumbs over top of them to
lock them into place. Keep the first
two fingers straight. Bring the arms
so the elbows are by the sides, and the hands are by the shoulders with the
two fingers of each hand pointing straight up. Bring the forearms and hands
forward to an angle of 30 degrees from the vertical. Press the shoulders and
elbows back firmly but comfortably. The palms face forward. Close the eyelids.
Roll the eyes up gently and concentrate at the brow point - the Third Eye area
- at the top of the nose where the eyebrows would meet. Create a steady, slow,
deep, and complete breath. Mentally pulse rhythmically from the brow point out
to Infinity the sounds:
Saa Taa Naa Maa
Saa is Infinity. Taa is Life. Naa is Death. Maa is Rebirth/Transformation.
This describes the cycle of life. This kriya brings a total mental balance of the
psyche. The entire mantra means, “I meditate on Truth, Truth that I am.”
Try it for forty days. During that time eat lightly and speak only truth
directly from your heart. Practice for eleven to sixty-two minutes.
To end the meditation, inhale deeply and exhale three times. Then open and close
the fists several times. Relax.

African Bones
Treading ancient African ground
sacred ancestral roots
sounding deep rhythmic calls
trancing
releasing
burning
sweating the beat through my bones
surrendering to the call
I am drawn to the ritual drum
the beat
the rhythmic beat
the echoed beat
my heart beat
drawn to the wisdom of our African earth
the wisdom held in the bones of my African body
my African dreams
shells
stones
and rich brown fertile earth
44
drawing wisdom from our mother through my feet
receiving guidance through my crown
as I sweat the answers out through my blood
through my being
kissing the sky as I fly to new grounds
new fields of bliss
re-touching
and reaching
my core
45
I write
I write to dance
to trance
to fly and sweat and dive into myself
I write to find myself hiding between the lines
I write to sing and cry
lie in a quiet place
be in a sacred space
I write to stay alive in the dead end quietness of night
I write to find the fury
bury the past
to give myself a chance
to
prance
across
the
page
46
I write to find the laughter
explore the pain
to regain and reclaim
I write to spit and pull
dig and find
to move through the mountain
experience the cave
unshackle the slave
I write to live
I write to re-align and re-awaken the truth
my light
47
My Field
A strong fiery force moves me
I trip
bite my tongue
walk faster
spread wider
dissolve deeper
into this fertile revolution
I sense a delicate blossoming
an abundant flowering
a fullness
painting spaces
between
beyond
and into the multiple layers of myself
A tangible recalibration
A rare wild orchid kissed by forest sun
48
My skin soot and sweat soaked
from setting fire to what I came to burn
My blood drenched and fertile fields
tossed
turned
ploughed
tilled
weeded
watered
prepared

Inner Assessment
1. To Know Your Inner Balance:
Sit in easy pose, with your eyes closed, focusing at the third eye point. Bring
the hands into prayer pose at the center of the chest. Slide the left hand up-
ward until it is
higher than the right, with the left palm facing to the right side. The right
palm faces left and touches the left arm just below the wrist. Breathe as long
and slowly as you can. three to eleven minutes.
2. To Know Your Inner Projection:
Sit in easy pose with the eyes closed, focusing at the third eye point. Your
thumbs are hooked into the hollows on either side of the bridge of your nose.
Slowly close the palms into prayer pose, closing from the bottom of the side of
the palms upward, touching the sides of the fingers last. Hold this position.
Breathe as long and slowly as you can. Three to eleven minutes.
3. To Know Your Inner Strength:
Sit in easy pose with the eyes closed, focusing at the third eye point. Breathe as
long and slowly as you can. Place your right hand over your left at your heart
center and press as hard as you can, maintaining the pressure throughout the
meditation. Three to eleven minutes.

51
Great Spirit
I am but one particle of you oh great infinite spirit
In and through this one particle
I am everything
In this one grain of sand
this one blade of grass
praying mantis
moth
and great blazing sun
you breathe in complete fullness
I marvel at the quiet reminders you leave
in every symphonic sunrise
in every nebulous night sky
You live
a vibrant timeless pulse
in the nucleus of every atom in the galaxy
52
Full
I slip into your skin with ease
smell your familiarness with hungry gratitude
we play and dance connection
our bodies sweat words between us
possibility and freedom find fresh wide spaces within me
open me to you
lightly
a veil melts from my heart
I savour the momentary beauty you bring
In deep thought and warmth I smile at the surprise of you
and dream of holding no expectation
Mindless
this moment blissful
uncomplicated
complete
53
Home
You are my eyes tight shut into the pillow prayer
the earthquake shiver up my spine
You are the revolution of my pulse
my broken breath
my racing heart
my madly magnified ecstatic heart
You are the flush of blood into my fevered fire
the pounding ache in my chest
the crippling weakness in my knees
the flames in my gut
You are my undying mantra
my endless meditation
my barbed wire fence desperation
You are my heel toe pace down echoed hallways impatience
my backstroke swimming in my head madness
my tight lipped
humour stripped
frustration
You are the beads of sweat that gather at the base of my spine
54
the name that I whisper and whisper
then scream
and spit
You are the potent grip and faintness of my passion
the eternal crescent of my every wave and moon
You are the invisible other side of me that breathes through my skin
From your guarded
caged
controlled
world
and without knowing
seeking
or trying
there is a humble home for you
that has grown for you
in my soul
55
Mountain Memory
Between rustling leaves
lazy blue skies
and bright full moonscapes
Between ancient face carved rock
a luminous milky way
and a most generous spattering of stark silent stars
Between clear quartz crystal cleansed rock pools
a baboon’s distant bark
and the sweet smells of rich earth
I hear you
I hear your fingers gently caress the strings of your guitar
I see the fireside glow reflecting your trance
as sweet soft rhythms are carried on waves of wind
falling on hypnotized ears
your sounds echo around
The strumming
humming
the whispered words
rhythms
56
beats
and tunes
dissolve into an endless sky
and sink deep into the mountains core
In the silence between the sounds
I sense your wholeness
In the mountains
in the dark
in the wind
in isolation
I hear your laughing heart
and smile at your memory
57
Echo Valley
I greet your smiling eyes that laugh with green pools of mountain breath
in boots that have walked through flames in Jesus shoes
snake charmer
power bringer
gentle universal rhythm singer
I see your heart of deep gold where flames lick and flicker
your breath
the way you breathe in
a cellular celebration
your exhale
your release
your letting go
pure surrender
you a creator of deep rhythms and tunes
you an invoker of the lion light of soul
you a wild wise wizard of raw dust and naked earth
calling in the spirit winds of change
calling in the winds of spirit that burst with change
58
Awe
Leaping into cracks
free-falling into portals
perpetually pontificating purpose
I silence the whispers of doubt
Here I live liquidly
move through mountains
levitate lightly
sing in awe
59
New Moon Prayer
I plant my visions with consciousness. I open to the divine truth and pure
purpose of my soul. I trust that where I am right now is absolutely perfect. I
allow flow to river through my life. I allow magic to breathe through me. I
open my heart wider than wide and witness the unfolding revelations that dance
swirling rhythms all around me. I celebrate the mystery and mastery I stand in,
celebrate the unknowing, the discomfort, the challenge that stretches me beyond
what I knew possible. I pray I may stay awake and fully present in all moments,
and live here in harmony with this sacred breath. Here.
Sat Nam.
*Speak this prayer from the heart under the bountiful blessings of the New Moon.
60
Temple
In the temple of my solitude
worlds collide
souls converge
mystically merge
In the temple of my solitude
there is no space
distance or separation
stars shoot
snow falls
suns set
rainbows rise
In the temple of my solitude
on my pine cushioned forest floor
we speak in silent psychic tongues
I sense you
sniff you
surround you
wolflike I remember your scent
61
In the temple of my solitude
there glows a certainty
there lives in the embers of an ancient undying flame
your name
In the temple of my solitude
your
name

Apana
Apana represents the energy of elimination. The poems in this section grapple
with emotions, blockages and limiting patterns.
Powerful Apana is needed to harness and process the elimination of toxins, not
only physical bodily toxins but toxic thoughts, patterns (karmic and learned
ones) and emotions.
Strong Apana gives us the ability to know what to hold onto and what to willing-
ly let go of. It also gives us a strong sense of security, groundedness, strength,
grit and clarity.
63
Transformed
It is the squeezing through a bottleneck
that pressures and pushes me onto a precipice
the void before the freefall
It is the shock before an unexpected landing
the grit that burns into my blood
through seven layers of flesh
It is shattered glass in the sharp chill of the dark
that pumps fear into the blindness of the unknown
It is the engine that falters and fails
It is my blistered feet
as I beat the pavement in mid winter darkness
way after dawn
It is the why that I ask in the circle that smells the same
the endurance I find through a deep meditation
It is form that is changing
a cellular revolution
It slips between my fingers
as I search outside myself
It is my head against a wall
64
It is steel
iron
and brick
It is sore
raw
and naked
It is wet with tears
seeped in questions
It is continually striving and trying
It is a delicate flower carving its path out of hard earth
It is quiet focused survival
It is a seed cracking rock
a drip sculpting stone
It is an army of resistance into the heart of surrender
It is fury bleeding into peace
It is an excruciating birth from one life into the next
from one universal womb into this
It is karmic and breathing
It is the sweat I see on your brow
the truth I see in your eyes
65
It is words that live in silence that can’t find a way to be born
It lives in the essence of each breath
It is divine
It is human
It is eternal
It is the stripping of all illusions
a God hunt for brilliance and purity of spirit
It is a safe cocoon
yet a steep path to liberation
66
5 minutes
Your heart is lost far beyond the moon that is full
It laughs with light and finds my face
between moving shadows
to reveal rock hard truth
No masks
Weeks of anticipation
drop heavily
into a murky five minute selfish gratification of you
five minutes of raw
of disconnect
of closed eyes
turned backs
and persistent prickly persuasions
Surprisingly a sweet and deep gratitude is birthed from this thick mud
A silently centered clarity dances somewhere deep
In quiet relief
I celebrate the knowing that this sticky empty space
riddled with dense ancient walls
will never be revisited
67
An impotent goodbye to a barely breathing gallery of fading art
a stoned heart
and frozen bones
all masterfully tied in a maze
of intricate
unyielding
unfathomable
tightly knitted knots
68
Deep Memory of a Past Projection
Sit straight. Eyes look at the tip of the nose. Place the fingertips of each hand
together with the other hand. Form a ‘teepee’, and place it in front of the
torso at the level of the solar plexus. Fingers are spread and facing forward.
Inhale deeply through the nose. Hold as you mentally chant Saa Taa Naa Maa
once. Then exhale by segmenting the breath in eight equal strokes. Breathe out
through the rounded mouth. The exhale is not from the tip of the lips; it comes
from the middle of the mouth and is generated from the navel. By the eighth
exhale, pull the navel point all the way back towards the spine.
Continue for eleven minutes. Increase the time slowly to thirty-one minutes.
The past is dropped. The five elements clear to reveal your real self. You see
all without being caught. Let go, let flow.
69
70
Fire
The fire is in my heart this time
not my throat or my gut
just blazing a roaring trail
spewing out remnants of a past reality
that seem so distant and unreal
yet here I stand
because of it
in spite of it
healed by it
I sense the power of this cleansing
It engulfs me
in continual
whips
and licks
the heat
intensity
and sound
moves through me like lightening
an electrifying bolt of intrinsic fear
strips me naked in the face of everything
71
I hold on too tightly as it seers through me
I feel the pain of this shatter me
I am forced to open my eyes wide and let go
to follow it
dance with it
to melt into these flames that liberate my name
that ruthlessly burn centuries of deeply etched pain
72
Paper Cut
Barely visible paper cuts lace the circumference of my heart
penetrate an unexpected dizzying depth
stars
luminous shards of sharp shrapnel
blast me off my feet
I loose direction of my breath
grope for anything solid
grab
anything that makes sense
of your twisted
tricking
truths
your moving lips
and empty words
spit fear
masked in cruel clever clarity
you unravel me from an unearthed root
73
your slippery silence
loudly
locks
me
in
up
out
for 37 silences
I sit in this mountain of you
blown
time whirls into pools of irrelevance
paper cuts heal quickly
not this one

Meditation for the Negative Mind
When you need to balance the flashing negativity and protective fervor of
the Negative Mind, use this meditation. It clears the subconscious of unwanted
negative or fearful thoughts. Then the Negative Mind can give you clear signals
to protect and to promote you. The posture is one of calmness and humility
that lets the Creator, the Unknown, cover and shield you. This used to be called
Beggar’s Posture.
Sit straight in an easy cross-legged pose. Make a cup of the two hands with both
palms facing up, and the right hand resting on top of the left hand. The fingers
will cross over each other. Put this open cup at the level of the heart center.
Elbows are relaxed at the sides. Your eyes are slightly open and look down
toward the hands.
Inhale deeply in a long steady stroke through the nose. Exhale in a focused
stream through rounded lips. You will feel the breath go over the hands. Let
any thoughts or desire that is negative or persistently distracting come into
your mind as you breathe. Breathe the thought and feeling in, and exhale it out
with the breath.
After eleven to thirty-one minutes, exhale completely and suspend the breath
out as you lock in the navel point. Concentrate on each vertebra of the spine
until you can feel it all the way to the base, as stiff as a rod. Then inhale
powerfully, exhale completely, and repeat the concentration. Repeat this final
breath three to five times. Then relax completely.
The length of time is eleven to thirty-one minutes.
75
76
Resurrect
I shiver in the misty
dew soaked
pre dawn
ice crack pitch
My toes taste tar
my nails puncture flesh
etching blood red crescents
into my evolving infinite moons
I resist my blink
Through stinging eyes
and wet cheeks
I stare beyond the stoic tree forms
The dark stretches into unknown territories
a loud winged light pierces it
my feet remain planted
rich dark chocolate soil
crumbles around them
my world peels away
77
Dormant universes reveal themselves
a third eye
an initiation
a vision
my resurrection
78
Cherdi Kala
You who sweetly
silently
surrender your being into the heart of the earth
into the soul of the universe
shall rise like one thousand victorious suns
Pranidhana - dynamic surrender
Cherdi Kala - continuous resurrection
yours with each in breath
a courageous roaring rebirth
your life eternally sanctified
after hundreds of fear soaked deaths
after one hundred more
You shall rise
angel heart
choose to rise
79
Chasing Darkness
How can we ignore
little boys that run with big shadows and big guns
numb to death
numb to pain
the gruesome act of killing
nothing
the warm smell of spilled blood
fresh
on their sweaty unflinching lips
images that when their eyes shut
they relive in the screeching pitch black chambers of their minds
psychic torture tangling and chasing the darkness that listens
little bodies overloaded
twisted and haunted
I hear a twisted tale of an empty man
that prowls his prey
with lies and deception
to unload
sickly explode
his unprocessed dark pain
80
into the fragile womb of a child
in a hushed humid bush a little body lies naked
the mutilation
the torture
the acid blue flames that fuel these decisions
these internal wars
that burn through truth
annihilating universal law
heavy dark wailing winds echo the flight of souls
wild wailing winds carry them away
hovering
suppressed
imprisoned
for generations
the seething unvoiced undercurrents of our unconscious ancestors
manifest in our lives today
cycles will repeat until broken
from ether
to earth
to dust
81
cycles
will
repeat
until
broken

Apana Kriya (Elimination Exercises)
1. Vatskar Kriya: Sit in easy pose with hands on knees. Make a beak of the mouth
and drink as much air as you can into the stomach using short, continuous sips,
as if you were swallowing. Pull in and hold. Roll the stomach to the left, then
reverse the direction to the right when the breath has been held in for half its
maximum time.
Continue rolling the stomach as long as possible with neck lock applied. When
the breath can be held in no longer, straighten the spine and exhale slowly (not
powerfully) through the nose. Repeat the complete exercise two times. Always do
this on an empty stomach and not more than twice per day.
2. Sit on the heels and touch the forehead to the ground. Keep hands down
at sides. Imagine that there is a big tail coming off the end of the spine and
wag it. Imagine the tail weighs 100 pounds and try to make it break the wall.
Continue for three minutes followed by five minutes of rest.
3. Lie down on the back. Press the toes forward. Lift both legs three feet up.
Start long deep breathing. Continue for two to three minutes. Inhale, hold
briefly and relax.
4. Lying down on the back, bring the legs over head and catch the toes. Roll
back and forth from the base of the spine to the neck. Hold onto the toes and
keep rocking for three minutes.
83
5. Sit up immediately in easy pose. As calmly as possible, make a “U” of the right
hand and close the right nostril with the thumb of the right hand. Use the
little finger to close the left nostril. Inhale through the left nostril, exhale
through the right. Continue for three minutes, then inhale and feel the energy
radiate throughout the body, giving health and life.
6. Sit in easy pose. Interlace fingers and thumbs in front of the chest at the
heart level with the palms facing the chest. Turn the head left and right. In-
hale as the chin goes over the left shoulder, exhale as it turns right. Continue
for three minutes.
7. Sit in easy pose, arms out parallel to the ground. Swing arms backward in
a rolling motion as if swimming (7a). Continue for 1 minute. Inhale - bend the
elbows to bring the fingertips onto the shoulders (7b). This remagnetizes the
electric current. While the breath is held, the energy starts circulating. Exhale
- let the energy flow to all parts and feel refreshed.
COMMENTS:
This is a good example of a simple but powerful series that was kept secret by
those few yogis who learned it. This will allow you to completely master your
digestive system and give a youthful appearance to your skin. Aging does not
start with years; it begins with nutritional deficiency, intestinal problems, and
an inflexible spine that disrupts the flow of spinal fluid.
Exercise 1 adjusts the acid-base balance in the stomach, but it must be done
regularly without missing a single day. Exercise 2 strengthens the heart,
exercise 3 slims the waistline and cleans the gallbladder, exercise four flushes
the circulation and balance the nerves. Exercises five and six distribute the
pranic force and stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid . Exercise seven
remagnetizes the aura.
