A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

Here, There & Everywhere On June 24, 2018, members of our Faith family gathered together at our Celebration Ministry Center to burn a copy of the documents indicating that we have fully paid off the church’s mortgage. What had been a $2.5-million debt less than 10 years ago is now paid in full. God has been good; and His people have been faithfully generous. Thank you!

Because we are no longer sending payments to the bank, we have freed up hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next 10-15 years, which can be invested in ministry and mission opportunities. In the next five years alone, we are saving $250,000 in principal and interest payments. What are we to do with those savings? In the long run, we will use those dollars for staff development, discipleship training, worship and arts, building maintenance, Christian education, ministry to the sick and dying, and so much more. In the short term, our Faith leaders have decided to invest the next five years of savings into partnering with organizations that are making significant Kingdom im-pact, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

In the first chapter of Acts, when Jesus was about to ascend to heaven, He commissioned His disciples, and thus the Church: “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). In essence, Jerusalem was their immediate community. Judea and Samaria was the region and the neighboring communities, extending a bit further from home. The ends of the earth, of course, meant global efforts to bring the knowledge and saving faith of Jesus Christ to all people. In our modern way of saying it, they represent our community (the Fox Valley), our state and region, and then the whole world. Put more simply and briefly: “Here, There, and Everywhere.”

We are working on plans for investing not just money but also time and energy to work alongside six great ministries over the next five years — raising up

volunteers, providing leaders, and encouraging these organizations that are making a difference for the Kingdom of God. Here are financial commitments we are making over the next five years:

Here: $25,000 — 5 Stones

(combatting human sex trafficking) www.5-stones.org

$25,000 — Habitat for Humanity

(fighting poverty through access to affordable housing)

www.foxcitieshabitat.org

$25,000 — Mother & Unborn Baby Care (caring for distressed mothers

and their children) www.fvmubc.org

$25,000 — Celebration Lutheran School (providing Christ-centered education)

www.celebrationlutheran.net

There: $100,000 — Camp Luther

(building up believers for service to the Church and world)

www.campluther.com

Everywhere: $50,000 — PLI

(multiplying missional leaders in the LCMS and worldwide)

www.plileadership.org That’s a total of $250,000 over the next 5 years. I am truly excited to see what God does with this investment in that time!

Of course, some may ask: “Pastor, don’t we have plenty of needs of our own at Faith? What about building repairs and maintenance?” Certainly, we have needs right here at Faith Lutheran. With two aging facilities, we need to invest in ongoing care of our properties. Some major projects are planned for the coming years that will require significant amounts of money, which we are not neglecting. Already, two years ago or more, we saw a growing need

for funding of maintenance projects. Knowing that, we began setting aside roughly the equivalent of our mortgage payments to build a facilities project account. That means we are already investing as much in our facilities as in the new “Here, There, and Everywhere” initiative. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Faith, we are able to maintain two beautiful buildings, pass on the faith through Christian education, provide meaningful and inspiring worship services, retain a gifted and loving staff, AND respond to opportunities to make a difference outside of Faith at the same time. These are exciting times for Faith Lutheran! Thank you for all you do in helping us make such a difference! Pastor Aaron Rosenau

Children in Puerta Abajo wait for a Bible story during VBS.

The team spent time pampering the mothers and sharing God’s Word with them.

The team from Faith.

The mission team had a great time spending time with the kids and their families sharing God’s love. They played games, sang songs, did some crafts and colored, and pampered some of the ladies. They got to spend some time with some of the sponsored families and even shared a meal with them. The tables and chairs for which the Sunday School children raised money have been purchased. They also bought a cash machine for the ladies to sell their jams.

There will be more children available for sponsorship soon! Stay tuned!

PUPPET MINISTRY We use puppets to creatively share the Word in Sunday School and Children’s Messages. New puppeteers, prop/costume creators and stage/sound technicians are always welcome. Adults and students Grade 5-12 can take part. Those interested can contact Kathleen Lane at the church office. We’ll begin rehearsals in September.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY Beth Moore’s study on ESTHER will be the topic for our fall Women’s Bible Study. The Old Testament story of Esther is a profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today's overloaded and stressed woman. Women will learn strong lessons of faith, providence, and hope to equip them to live courageously "for such a time as this." This 10-week course includes DVD teaching, group discussion and self-study at home. There will be two groups, one meeting on Sundays and one on Tuesdays, both from 6:30-8:15 p.m. (A minimum of 10 women is needed for each group, otherwise they will be combined.) Classes begin on September 9 & 11. Pre-registration is needed so that books can be ordered. There is a $15 suggested donation for the book. Register on the bulletin board signup sheets, by contacting Kathleen Lane ([email protected], 739-9191 ext 1116) or at faithfoxvalley.org/Esther.

THE DIVINE DRAMA God has left a rather long message in His Word … you deserve an explanation. Ever wish you had a better grasp of the Bible and what it really means? Something clear and simple? The Divine Drama takes you on a fast-paced but highly revealing journey through the entire Bible, tracing the key themes that surface within it. The goal is to provide an informative, faith-enriching course that helps understand the big picture of the Bible and not get lost in all the details—all in 30 seconds! If you’ve ever wanted a Bible basics course, this is for you! The first sixteen lessons focus on the complete Biblical storyline from Genesis to Revelation. The next fourteen lessons, arising from that storyline, seek to apply those learnings to how we live our lives today. Pastor Dan, who has taught portions of this class to his students at Concordia University, will bring it to us as the Bible comes to life in a simple and easy way to understand. Classes will meet on Tuesday nights, starting September 11. Watch for more information and registration details.

Like Arrows movie This movie, created by Family Life to address the important role of parenting, will be shown on Sunday, Sept 16, at the Celebration Ministry Center. A light hot dog supper will be served at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. the movie will be shown to parents and grandparents, following by discussion ending about 7:30 p.m. Child care will be provided for those who register in advance. A $2.50/person suggested donation is asked for the supper. Families can register on the bulletin board sign-ups or at faithfoxvalley.org/LikeArrows. Volunteers to assist with the meal and child care can contact Kathleen Lane ([email protected], 739-9191,ext 1116)

The Art of Parenting The Art of Parenting is an 8-session, video-driven course designed to help parents raise their children from a biblical foundation. The information and discussion is helpful to any parent with children, infant through teenager. We will be forming small groups, meeting at church or in homes, to go through the course. Groups will set their own schedules. Those interested in leading or joining a group can use the signup on the bulletin board or

online at faithfoxvalley.org/ArtofParenting. You’ll be contacted with more information. Can’t commit to 8 sessions in a small group? Family Life offers a free on-line course that can be accessed anytime and at any pace. While not as comprehensive as the small group study, it does offer good support to parents. The course can be found at FamilyLife.com/parenting/online. Questions? Contact Kathleen Lane ([email protected], 739-9191 ext 1116). More information about The Art of Parenting is available at FamilyLife.com/Parenting.

GRAND PARENTHOOD Join us September 10 for “GRAND Parenthood”. Find more information on page 9. Register for the 2018-2019 School Year We are now pre-enrolling 3K-8th grade students for the 2018-2019 school year. We are a small, yet rigorous school. As parents, you want the best educational setting for your children. You want them to learn, grow, make friends, and be well-prepared spiritually and academically to move on to high school. Celebration is not for all parents and children, but it may just be the right fit for you and your child. Contact the school at [email protected] or 920-734-8218 if you are interested in learning more about Celebration Lutheran School or would like a tour.

Tuition Assistance for Families Sending your child to a parochial school can be very expensive, especially if you have more than one child. Celebration Lutheran School (CLS) has been given some financial tools to assist families with such a need. The School Board has created a Celebration Tuition Scholarship Fund and the School Choice Program. The Tuition Scholarship Fund can be used to help families who qualify for a tuition grant. It will help reduce the amount of tuition that is to be paid by the family. If the family qualifies for the School Choice Program, then all the tuition will be paid for that child entering Celebration Lutheran School. Contact CLS at

[email protected] or 920-734-8218 if you are interested in learning more about ways to help fund your child’s education.

We would like to send a special thank you to Jerry Hansen and Duwayne Krause for their hard work in replacing the windows in our large classroom. They were very thoughtful in working around our children’s schedules, especially naptime. We are very excited to have new windows that will open to give us fresh air and natural sunlight.

We continue to pray that God sends us qualified teachers and a cook to fill the open positions in our staff. Please contact the FCC office if you know anyone who might be interested. Our phone number is (920) 739-7772 or you can e-mail us at [email protected].

STEPHEN MINISTRY Love One Another as I Have Loved You . . . In John 15:12, Jesus says, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Loving and caring for one another is not just the pastor’s job—it’s something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which people with special gifts for caring ministry can put those gifts to use in an organized way, bringing Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it. If you know someone who is going through a difficult time, contact one of our Stephen Leaders (Amy Cox, Pastor Kyle Jones, Joan Klaas, Mary Nimmer, Kris Smith, Pastor Jim Wiebel, or Bob Zuehlsdorf) about Stephen Ministry. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused, confidential, one-to-one Christian care—to help that person experience the healing power of Christ’s love.

THIRD WEEK OFFERING On the third weekend of each month, Faith is giving away all “loose plate” offerings to world mission partners, area charities and other non-profits. Offerings received August 18-20 will support the work of Children’s HopeChest (CHC) in our sponsored village, Puerta Abajo, in Guatemala. CHC connects communities in the U.S. and Canada with communities of orphaned and vulnerable children overseas. They believe holistic transformation happens when one community partners with another. The partnership between Faith and Puerta Abajo helps to meet the medical, physical, educational, emotional, and spiritual needs of 193 children in the village.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Through our summer sermon series, we are exploring the “Marks” of discipleship—what do disciples of Jesus look like? What do they do? The Bible leads us to three main points: 1) Love God, 2) Love Others, and 3) Make Disciples. Part of loving others and making disciples is taking advantage of opportunities to serve where our neighbors have need. If you are looking for ways to make a difference, consider these opportunities in our community: 1) Adult Mentors for Students at Kaleidoscope School. Kaleidoscope (formerly Roosevelt Middle School) is located just a couple

blocks from our Faith Ministry Center. Churches in our area are teaming together to find loving adults who are willing to spend roughly an hour each week with students in need of adult mentors. Basic training is provided through the Boys and Girls Club. This is a chance to transform a young person’s life by sharing the love of Jesus. Want more details? Please contact Pastor Aaron Rosenau: [email protected].

2) Habitat for Humanity. Faith will be teaming together with other churches from the Fox Valley to build two new homes near downtown Appleton, beginning in August. We are looking for 10-20 volunteers for a variety of tasks, some construction, some site support, and some preparing meals. For a full list of volunteer needs for these two homes, visit this website: foxcitieshabitat.volunteerhub.com/lp/missourisynod/. Please contact Pastor Aaron Rosenau with questions.

MEAL PROGRAM Now Open! Thompson Center on Lourdes Meal Program at noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays. Please reserve a meal 24 hours in advance by calling (920) 858-5619. Menus are available on their website: thompsoncenteronlourdes.org.

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Join Faith staff and fellow members and friends as we attend a local simulcast of The Global Leadership Summit at Pathways Church, broadcast live from Willow Creek Community Church on August 9-10. The Summit features outstanding, nationally known speakers delivering messages designed to help leaders from churches, businesses, and community organizations develop strong, Biblically-based leadership skills by honing their own attitudes and aptitudes. And what’s great is that we get to do this learning together as a team, in an environment that fosters the sharing of ideas and collaborative growth, right in our own back yard. Register today at www.willowcreek.com/events/leadership. Use promo code PARTNERCH to get Faith’s special rate. For more information about the Summit contact Amy Cox ([email protected] or 739-9191).

CELEBRATING GRANDPARENTS DAY! PSALM 71:18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.

Grandparents are incredibly important to their grandkids. Grandparents are uniquely positioned to spiritually influence their grandkids. Grandparents have a Biblical mandate to do so.

Most Christians agree with these statements about grandparents, but so little is being done to challenge and equip this huge group — 30 million strong — of potential influencers. Yes, the grandparenting relationship has incredible potential for discipleship. Christian grandparents themselves get caught up in a “retirement culture” that pushes them to pursue their own pleasure rather than invest in their grandchildren.

Grandparents, you have a significant chance to impact your grandchild's life for eternity! Don't miss it. Your grandchildren need you to be the best grandparent you can be. It is far more than rocking chairs. It is a second chance to do all of the "ought tos" and "should haves" that the busyness and demands of daily parenthood kept you from doing. It is living part of the idealistic dream of...

Passing on a great sense of blessing to each one of your grandchildren.

Being a light to guide the way for the generations that follow you.

Setting a clear and reliable standard for your grandchildren to emulate.

Helping your grandchildren, if and when, their parents go through a divorce.

Responding graciously if your grandchildren move in with you.

Being an effective grandparent to your step-grandchildren.

"Spoiling" your grandchildren in a positive way.

Avoiding crossing the fine line between intervening and interfering.

Processing the inevitable conflicts that go with grandparenting.

Growing even closer to your grandchildren as they grow older.

Leaving a legacy that will go on forever.

Join us September 10 for the start of an 8-week Bible Study “GRAND Parenthood”. Find more information on this study on page 5.
