Practice-Based Learning at CSPH

The Colorado School of Public Health is committed to providing students with practical experience

in a variety of public health settings. There are numerous opportunities for students to be involved

in hands-on community public health work. Students are encouraged to be engaged early in the

program and to maintain and build a service-oriented focus throughout their academic career at the

school. Opportunities include volunteer, field school and skill development workshops, curriculum

infusion of community projects, independent study, MPH/DrPH practicum and capstone projects.

MPH Practicum

The MPH practicum is a core course intended to support student growth, both professionally and

personally by working on a public health problem that contributes to a community need. The

experience is intended to provide students an opportunity to:

Integrate academic course work in “real world” public health practice,

Develop professional skills by leading a project in a public health setting that contributes to

an unmet need of the host site.

Develop skills that involve problem solving, working on a team and critical thinking

necessary in today’s public health field

Prior to enrolling in the practicum experience, MPH students must meet the following requirements:

1) Successfully complete the Foundations of Public Health course or the Public Health Practice

course (CSU)

2) Successfully complete 18 credits including three core courses

3) Be in good academic standing

4) Gain approval of their concentration director

Overall, enrollment in the MPH practicum has increased every year since the inception of the school. The table below represents all Colorado School of Public Health student practicum in each academic year.

Students are required to submit a practicum proposal, including a learning plan and timeline, prior

to enrolling for the practicum course. Most students enrolling in the practicum explore many

options while developing their plan. Students are encouraged to work on a practicum learning plan

that will provide them an opportunity to work on a meaningful project that will develop their public

health skills and at the same time develop important professional contacts. Each practicum is an

individualized plan developed mainly by the student with input and guidance from the host site

preceptor and concentration director. *For a list of Summer 2012 – Fall 2012 – Spring 2013

MPH Capstone

The MPH Capstone experience includes a capstone project or research paper, class work that

builds incorporates discussion about the public health value and relevance of the project, how the

various public health disciplines contribute and view the project as well as reflection on

competencies acquired throughout the MPH program. Students develop a professional oral

presentation and poster that are presented at the Public Health Forum.

The goal of the Capstone experience for MPH students is to connect all aspects of the curriculum,

including seminars, lectures, course work, independent studies, projects and direct experiences to

establish an understanding, appreciation and working knowledge of public health practice and,

specifically, demonstrate how they have developed competencies in their concentration which will

enhance public health practice in Colorado, the nation and the world.

DrPH Practicum

The DrPH program with concentrations in epidemiology and community and behavioral health was

launched in fall of 2011. The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), our accrediting

agency, requires that each DrPH student be able to demonstrate the DrPH competencies through

a practicum experience in addition to course work, qualifying examinations, a written and oral

proposal of an original research protocol, a final research project and a public defense of the

research. The DrPH practicum should be discipline-specific, planned, supervised, and evaluated

public health practice experience. Students must have completed at least one year of course work

(preferably two years) prior to registering for the four-hour practicum (a minimum of 240 contact

hours). Students are encouraged to complete the leadership and management courses before

undertaking practicum.

DrPH Practicum Parameters

All DrPH degree candidates in the Colorado School of Public Health are required to complete four

credit hours (a minimum of 240 contact hours) in a practicum experience. The practicum is a field

experience that integrates the DrPH academic preparation with advanced public health practice.

Advanced knowledge and skills, based on the DrPH competencies and learned in the DrPH

courses, are applied in an agency setting under the direction and guidance of an experienced

community mentor. The practicum for DrPH students must incorporate higher-level skills (policy

development, epidemiologic analyses, etc.) compared to the MPH practicum experiences, although

the settings may be similar. These higher-level skills are expected to reinforce the competencies

attained in pursuing the DrPH degree.

Mountains and Plains Education and Research Center

Student: Christina Aguilera, Community and Behavioral Health, Environmental Health Focus Preceptor: Lee Newman, Director Faculty Advisor(s): Lori Crane, PhD Project Summary: Veterinary workers have similar occupational risks as human healthcare workers. This project aims to undertake the disparity in the level of training and education as it pertains to occupational injury and illness prevention. Information gleaned from quantification of gaps and assessment of specific needs will be employed to inform development of intervention tools. These tools are intended for long term use in form of outreach and education. Chaffee County Health Department

Student: Anne Hill, Community and Behavioral Health Preceptor: Susan Ellis, Public Health Director Faculty Advisor(s): Holly Wolf, PhD Project Summary: The primary goal of this project is to understand how a rural county health department conducts the CHAPS phases I – V. In addition, the ways that a rural county health department engages community partners and responds to community input as well as recognizes community health needs and assets were also explored. This allows for the comparison of how a rural county health department conducts a community health assessment as compared to an urban county health department, both differences and similarities.

UC-Denver Medical Campus and Children’s Hospital

Student: Pauline Lucas Preceptor: Dr. Eric Simões, Professor of Pediatrics Faculty Advisor(s): Elaine Scallan, PhD Project Summary: Develop a proposal to study the herd effect of school aged immunization program in Bohol Island, Philippines. The primary objective is to determine if herd immunity is observed in the adult and elderly population and to assess the strength of that protection. Ultimately, the long-term goal of this project is to design an immunization program that will benefit the island’s population by targeting a subgroup that will provide the highest degree of protection to the rest of the community. Findings from this study will have implications for influenza immunization planning and implementation not only in the Philippines but the rest of the developing world.

Colorado Health Institute

Student: Katherine Page, Community and Behavioral Health Preceptor: Sara Schmitt, Director of Community Health Policy Faculty Advisor(s): Judy Baxter, MA Project Summary: This project focuses on two major areas, both of which are auxiliary of the DrPH leadership project. The first semester focuses on completion of the Oral Health review which will result in some key deliverables. Deliverables include a review and composite of oral health literature, documentation of lessons learned, and development of an oral health portfolio. The second semester efforts will center on a larger Health Equity “Thought leadership” piece. This will likely include key areas of public health that impact health equity, and an overview within each current status and opportunities for policy/practice.

Community Partners Profile

CSPH has expanded community partnerships in the past academic year. Currently 74

organizations have Educational Affiliation Agreements with CSPH. Organizations mentoring CSPH

students range in location from urban, rural, out of state, international, local, state and federal

governmental agencies, non-profit and for-profit settings.

Three hundred and and eighty eight CSPH students have been placed in the community since

2008 in over 207 locations. Many community preceptors choose to continue to mentor students

each semester. Over thirty preceptors have mentored more than one student.

In order to support all practice-based learning constituents in the placement process, CSPH

developed an online database called PBL Match https://pbl.publichealthpractice.org. Students,

Faculty and Community Organization Members are invited to create a profile on PBL Match.

Volunteering and Service

Throughout the academic year there are organized service events for students, faculty and staff to

participate in the community. These service and volunteer opportunities allow students to:

Contribute to the surrounding campus communities

Grow relationships with other students, staff and faculty

Enhance their skills in a variety of areas

MPH Students gather for a group photo before screening homes for potential lead poisoning with

local non profit organization, Groundwork Denver.

Fall Orientation August

ProjectCURE

Participants: 23 New Students, MPH, MS, PhD, Certificate

Students volunteered an afternoon at the new student orientation to help sort medical supplies to be distributed by ProjectCURE to hospital around the world in need. Hospitals and medical supply companies in the United States donate overstocked, unused and older medical supplies to ProjectCURE. Student volunteers organized these donations into boxes of like supplies where they could be easily be stored in ProjectCURE’s warehouse.

Food Bank of the Rockies

Participants: 28 New Students, MPH, MS, DrPH, Certificate Students volunteered an afternoon at the new student orientation to help sort food donations to be distributed by the Food Bank to Colorado families in need. Food donations were collected from around the state by individuals and organizations. The donations were stock piled at the Food Bank warehouse where students organized donation boxes to be distributed by the Food Bank.

Fall Event

Groundwork Denver – Westwood Neighborhood, Denver

Participants: 24 Students, MPH, Certificate

Students participated in a neighborhood screening of homes in the Westwood neighborhood to assess the potential for lead poisoning. Students were trained by Groundwork Denver on the harms of lead poisoning in children. They were then shown specific indicators to look for in assessing a house for potential lead poisoning from the street. In teams of two, students walked each street in the Westwood neighborhood, stopping at each house and evaluating those indicators. Afterward, Groundwork Denver compiled all the data and identified houses that posed the highest risk for lead poisoning in children. Groundwork Denver went back to these homes and tested for lead sources. Homes with children and lead sources would then be presented with low cost and free options for remediation.

Winter Event

The practicum portfolio is a collection of materials personally developed by the student to share

their accomplishments and commitment to the field of public health gained through the practicum

experience. The purpose of the portfolio is to highlight the student’s self-reflection of the practicum

experience and to showcase to others their individual capabilities as a future health professional.

“My practicum with the USDA-APHIS-Veterinary Services was a very fulfilling professional experience. The USDA staff was very accommodating to my personal and professional needs and they provided a broad practicum experience which spanned most operational and administrational facets of the organization. I had the opportunity to spend time with the veterinary medical officers (VMOs) in the field; the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) veterinarians at several different slaughter facilities; Military Working Dogs and their handlers at Buckley Air Force Base; the TSA beagle service dogs at Denver International Airport; veterinarians at the CDC branch campus at Fort Collins; the research personnel at the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC); the USDA state veterinarians at the Denver Area Office; as well as the epidemiologists within the Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health. Furthermore, the USDA staff was very helpful in supporting my MPH project and ultimately providing the methodology basics for conducting preventive medicine/public health research; tools that will prove to be invaluable with my future veterinary public health career.”

Amanda Skenadore, MPH - Community Health Education I am a small town reservation girl and my passion in public health is to work with my people, the American Indian Community. My practicum was a great experience. Not only did I directly work with American Indian/Alaska Natives, I experienced working with the "urban" AI/AN community, which differs from reservation residing AI/AN's. This specific population faces numerous health disparities, such as high rates of diabetes. With this practicum I was involved in teaching nutrition and physical exercise to grade school kids. It was very rewarding working the kids. I was able to incorporate my MPH studies directly into the health education component. In addition I was able to network and meet new AI/AN health professionals which lead me to my current job at the Denver Indian Health and Family Services.

Danya Carroll – MPH Community Health Education “My practicum experience was truly an accumulation of everything that I had learned during my MPH program. I was not only able to put into practice the knowledge gained as a graduate student but I was also able to gain a deeper understanding of how to blend both practice and research. I became more aware of my strengths as a practitioner and researcher and how I could improve in these areas. More importantly my passion for improving the health and well-being of Native people, specifically American Indian communities was enhanced through my practicum experience.
