THE SILICON CHIP

We are at the start of a third industrial revolution, andthe protagonist of this revolution is the silicon chip.We find silicon chips in many products, but perhapsthe computer is the most obvious example.Computers are rapidly changing the world we live inand the way we live. They are creating new jobs andmaking old jobs unnecessary: offices, banks, farmsand factories are all very different from 20 years ago,and the people who work in them have very differentjobs. Doctors and scientists use computers to discovermore about our bodies and the world around us.Space exploration, genetic engineering, optical fibertechnology, scanners, lasers, telecommunications, and many more areas all depend on computers.

COMPUTERS

The processes which were used to be carried out by peopleoperating machines are now carried out by computers.Computers are used in car factories to control the operations ofproduction lines, and many cars are built almost entirely bycomputer-operated robots. In telephone exchanges, powerfulmainframes are used to direct calls which would formerly havebeen connected by a human operator. In airlines, reservationsare made, flights are scheduled and cargos are loaded bycomputers. Banks rely on electronic data processing, and inpharmaceutical companies, the functions of filling containers, sealing bottles and many other processes are controlled bycomputers. Even in small shops, small microcomputers are beinginstalled to assist in inventories, stocktaking, sales records andaccountancy.
