PART 6: Write short answers for these questions. Write answers in SENTENCES!! 1. What are the 3 parts of a paragraph? (6 pts, ~3 sentences)

ANSWERS: The 1st part of a paragraph is the topic sentence which tells the main idea of the paragraph and usually the writers opinion on that topic. The 2nd part of a paragraph is several supporting sentences. These give more details or proof for the topic sentence. Last, there is sometimes a concluding sentence which summarizes which summarizes the topic of the paragraph.

2. What are the 2 parts of a topic sentence and what do they do? (6 pts, ~3 sentences)

ANSWER:The two parts of a topic sentence are the 1) topic and 2) the controlling idea. The topic tells us what the content of the paragraph will be. The controlling idea gives us the author’s opinion or view of that topic and how it will be discussed.

3. What was the reputation of nurses and hospitals before Nightingale? (8 pts, ~3-4 sentences)

ANSWER: The reputation of nurses was very bad in Nightingale’s day. They were considered very low class and irresponsible women who were uneducated. They were often dirty, drunk and sometimes loose as well. It was a 3D job. The quality of nurses made the hospitals very unprofessional and dirty as well. People sometimes said, “If you want to die, go to the hospital.”

4. When she was young, what were two ways that Florence prepared for her future career? (4 pts, ~2-3 sentences)

ANSWER: Florence practiced nursing on animals first. Then she began helping those who were poor and sick around her. Then she got involved in social issue and social action. She also was very diligent in studying and loved math and other subjects. Later, she studied nursing in other countries and this helped her a lot too. Her foundation from the Bible in love and service for others was also an inspiration for her work.

5. Florence Nightingale was a pioneer in many things. What were 2 things she pioneered? (8 pts, ~4 sentences)

ANSWER:She invented cox combs. These were the ancestors of the pie charts we use today. So, she pioneered using graphics to represent statistics. She also pioneered many aspects of sanitation in hospital care and the training of nurses and changing nursing into a respected profession that saved millions of lives. Finally, she also pioneered women’s rights as career women and leaders in careers.

6. What are the 4 steps of the writing process? Describe them briefly and a couple ideas on how to do them well. (10 pts, ~5 sentences)ANSWER: 1) The 1st step is pre-writing. In this step, you just write down all the ideas you can think of. Use listing to just write down everything you can think of. Use free association to brainstorm topics and new ideas that might be useful. These can help you choose the topic to write on and also ideas to use in the topic.2) The 2nd step is organization. After you have listed many ideas, choose your topic and discard the ideas that don’t match that topic. Then organize the ideas that are left into categories. You should use an outline to organize them into useful categories for the 3rd step.3) The 3rd step is writing the rough draft. In this step you just write freely following the outline that you have created in step 2. Just write everything you can think of. Don’t worry about grammar or mistakes that much.4) The 4th step is revising, editing, polishing and the final copy. Go through your rough draft. Try to fix all the mistakes in grammar, spelling and other areas. Delete sentences that are not good for the essay. Improve any sentences you can. Put the sentences in logical order for maximum effect. Then ask a friend, family member or classmate or teacher to read it and give some suggestions for further improvement.

7. Write a topic sentence and 4-5 supporting sentences for it (you can use the listing technique if you wish). Make sure that your topic sentence is interesting and has a controlling idea. Choose 1 of the following topics. TOPICS: advantages of being bi-lingual, ways to make new friends, pros/cons of studying abroad, pros and cons of your university, pros and cons of marrying young. ( 15 points)

PART 3 : Write short answers to these questions:1. What are the 4 steps of the writing process? Describe them briefly and a couple ideas on how to do them well. (10 pts, ~5

sentences)

ANSWER: The 4 steps of the writing process are A) prewriting and creating new ideas: Here you choose a topic and collect ideas on the topic you’ve chosen. One technique is called listing. Write one topic and the list all the words and phrases that come to mind. This will help you come up with topics and ideas to write about. B) Organizing the ideas: Here you need to make an outline and then put the useful ideas from step 1 into the correct sections.C) Write a rough draft: Use your outline as a guide and write out a first draft of the essay. As you write, you might think of some new ideas to write about as wellD) Polish, revise, edit: Look at your writing critically. First try to make sure everything is organized in the best and most convincing way. Then work on fixing all the mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. It’s also a good idea to have a friend or peer read it through and point out problems for you to fix.

2. What are the 5 steps of the logical persuasion process? What are 1-2 ideas from each of the 5 areas (ways to do it, things to remember and focus on, etc.) (10 points, 5-7 sentences)

ANSWER:The steps of the logical persuasion process are:(1) Attention (get the attention of your audience): You can tell a joke, help the audience feel comfortable with a personal

story, make them curious, etc.(2) Need (describe the problem, demonstrate a need for change): Here you need to tell them clearly what the problem. It’s

useful to tell a shocking and tragic story here and then give some statistics to show how often it happens to people.(3) Satisfaction (present a practical, and concise solution): Here you need to give people a strong explanation on how to fix

the problem. Make sure that it is concise and clear and also make sure to include a real example and strong support from science/research to help people believe that it can work.

(4) Visualization (allow your audience to picture the results): Here you need to tell people the problems that will happen if they don’t follow your solution or the benefits that will come if they do follow your solution or both.

(5) Action (request immediate action from your audience). Do all the legwork for them. Give them the addresses, the websites, the form letter or whatever is needed to help them take action. Summarize briefly what you talked about and then challenge them to take action.

3. CHOOSE A or B: A) How did the Cambridge essay contest change Thomas Clarkson’s life? (8 pts, 3-5 sentences)B) Thomas Clarkson wanted to shock people to get them to stop slavery. What are 2 ways he used? (8 pts, 3-5 sentences)

Page 14: PRACTICAL WRITING/실용영작문 1—Things to Know for the …eslmission.truth-is-life.org/docs/esl/Dongeui 2007 midterm tests!!.doc · Web viewcomputer: I can use Excel, Ms word

ANSWER:A) Wilberforce was a member of parliament. His speeches there were very important to help make slavery illegal there. Most of other leaders of the abolitionists were Quakers. But, Wilberforce was a member of the church of England. This helped people not be so prejudiced against the abolitionists. All these ideas greatly helped the movement to its success.B) His book made a huge impact on the people. The book showed the evils of slavery from Equiano’s experience. It also showed that Africans had a rich culture and history and were not just brainless animals. Equiano was also a Christian and a deep thinker and good speaker himself. All these things helped convince people that Africans shouldn’t be slaves.

6. The anti-slavery talked about gradual freeing of the slaves. What are 2 ways that Elizabeth Heyrick forced them to focus on ending slavery immediately? (10 pts, 5-6 sentences)

ANSWER:A) After years of effort, many abolition movement leaders thought maybe gradual abolition would be better than doing it immediately. Elizabeth wrote a powerful pamphlet about working for immediate abolition, not gradual. Then she threatened to stop supporting the abolition movement financially. About 20% of the funds for the movement came from women. So, this threat was very effective. These efforts convinced the movement leaders to work for immediate abolition.

7. When war with France started, why did many people stop supporting the slavery movement? (6 pts, 3-4 sentences)

8. Which person do you think was most important in the fight to end slavery? Why? (6 pts, 3-4 sentences)FREE ANSWER

BONUS: A) Why did Cambridge choose slavery as the topic of its essay contest? Explain briefly the event that caused this choice. (5 pts)

ANSWER : A) Why did Cambridge choose slavery as the topic of its essay contest? Explain briefly the event that caused this choice. (5 pts)Before the contest, a ship owner threw many slaves into the ocean to drown so that he could profit from the insurance money. He thought he could make more money from this than selling them at the market. Many people were outraged. This caused many people to think more seriously about whether slavery was right or wrong. So, Cambridge chose the morality of slavery as the focus of its contest.
