Ricardo's Hair Cutting TipsDO• Assess your guest’s overall hair density, and observe where the hair is thinner and where it is thicker,

working with the natural growth pattern and movement of the hair.

• Pay close attention to the front hairline and crown, as these areas are typically finer and cause the hair to appear thinner.

• Explore different length options with the guest during the consultation, such as short, medium, long, fringes and layers.

• Create a strong perimeter to establish a denser weight line.

DON’T• Keep the hair too long, which will increase the appearance of thinness and appear flat.

• When working with longer styles, avoid overly layering the hair. Layers remove weight and will make the hair look thinner on the ends.

• Avoid texturizing, thinning shears and razor cuts. They will leave the hair looking frizzy and shapeless.

• Avoid cutting the hair too short, which may make the scalp visible.

• Avoid cutting extreme angles in the hair.

Choose a hair cut technique to practice on a mannequin or model. Start by creating a strong perimeter before you add layers or graduation. Ensure your layering and graduation techniques do not remove too much weight. Take note of how the techniques featured on the video remove small amounts from the perimeter weight line. The goal is to enhance movement and release excess weight that pulls the hair down.

• Use lower Color Catalyst™ volumes because thin hair typically has less cuticle. Higher volumes can lift the hair too quickly and compromise hair that is already weak.

• Use subtle dimension to prevent hair color from looking flat or one-dimensional. Shift tones or alternate formulas within one to two levels.

DON’T• Go too dark, as this may cause the scalp to show through and make the hair appear even thinner.

Choose a hair color technique to practice on a mannequin or model.

Hair Styling Tips for MenAll the hair styling information applies to men, too. The only difference is that men often don’t care for the fullness created with a blow dryer, although increasing fullness is beneficial for men with thinning hair.

• Instead of using a round brush to maximize volume at the roots, blow-dry the hair with your fingers or a vented brush while moving against the natural growth pattern.

• To style, emulsify an Aveda Men hair styling product in your hands, and apply it with your fingers from scalp to ends to reduce the fullness created during blow-drying.

Using a mannequin or model, follow the steps below to practice the hair styling techniques Allen demonstrates in the video.

1. Shampoo and condition the hair with Invati™ Exfoliating Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner.

2. Apply hair styling products from the Enhance Density and Increase Volume lists on page 36.

3. In the back quadrants, practice drying the hair with a flat-wrap technique.

4. In the front quadrants, practice round brushing to create lift, and create a round brush set using Air Control™ Hair Spray.
