2.1. WINDCUBE - Principle of Measurement
The WINDCUBE is an active remote sensor based on Light Detection And Ranging technique (Fig. 1). The heterodyne LIDAR principle relies on the measurement of the Doppler shift of laser radiations backscattered by the particles in the air (dust, water droplets, aerosols…). A laser pulse is sent into the atmosphere. The backscattered light is collected, converted into an electronic signal and sent to a computer. A specific signal processing algorithm is used to determine the scattered signal Doppler shift, and though, the wind speed along the line of sight. The time for the light pulse to travel out to the target and back to the LIDAR is thereby used to determine the range to the target.

2.2. WINDCUBE – Block Diagram
The WINCUBE is composed of 3 main elements (Fig.2) :
• Optical Head - containing the emission and reception optics • Electronics Unit – containing optoelectronic elements from laser source to detector • Computer - for data acquisition, signal processing and data saving. Processor is
Pentium Mobile 1.8GHz with 1024 Mb RAM. Additionally WINDCUBE can comprise optional units as for example temperature control unit.

CNR is equivalent to Signal to Noise Ratio. Measured wind value is taken into account if : CNR > -22 dB. Typical values are in the range of 0 to -20dB
• EDFA: fibre amplifier with two amplification stages. Nominal current in first stage varies from 290mA to 330 mA, Nominal current in second stage varies from 1500 to 1800 mA. EDFA Temperature should be between 0 and 50°C
• DIODE: PSD level expected in operation allows to diagnostic if optical power level is in agreement with expected value. Expected value is between 250 and 500 .
• DRIVE STATUS: Information on rotation stage operation. The user expects ‘Absolute position’ and ‘Absolute position read’ to be equal, and ‘error on drive position’ to be zero
• SYSTEM: Temperature, Space disk used, IP address • COMPASS: Information on compass connection • DATA AVAILABILITY: number of altitudes (%) for which the measurement is valid • DIGTIZER: acquisition board temperature should be between 0 and 50°C.
