• Initially in-house
• In Australia, development in the 1980’s as ‘broad-brush’ programs
• Confidential counselling service for employees (& family members)
• Referrals: Self, family, workplace, health, professional
• Utilisation between 1% - 5%

Employee Assistance Programs
• Have become increasingly commoditized
• Some providers have expanded into broader suite of wellness & organisational development services
• To a great extent EAP companies are perceived to be ‘just a counselling service’
• Increasing concern from employers that many serious mental health issues are not being addressed through their EAP provider
• EAP’s are generally seen as reactive
