He discovered it 25 years before the discovery of the electron6) What did Mendeleev spot in the table? Holes to be filled with other elements What was the element he had named after him? Mendelevium

DESCRIBE HOW IMPORTANT HIS IDEA WAS FOR CHEMISTRY

A Russian chemist called Dmitri Mendeleev published a __________. Mendeleev also arranged the _______ known at the time in order of relative atomic ______, but he did some other things that made his table much more successful. He realized that the physical and ________ properties of elements were related to their atomic mass in a 'periodic' way, and arranged them so that ______ of elements with similar ________ fell into vertical columns in his table.

DESCRIBE HOW IMPORTANT HIS IDEA WAS FOR CHEMISTRY

A Russian chemist called Dmitri Mendeleev published a periodic table. Mendeleev also arranged the elements known at the time in order of relative atomic mass, but he did some other things that made his table much more successful. He realized that the physical and chemical properties of elements were related to their atomic mass in a 'periodic' way, and arranged them so that groups of elements with similar properties fell into vertical columns in his table.

MENDELEEV DID NOT HAVE AN EASY JOB!

Take a worksheet and cut around the boxes can you put the cards into 3 columns?

Why have you decided to place them into theses 3 columns?

Check the group next to you have they completed it a similar way?

Which way do you think makes the most sense?

PLENARY

Write down 2 points which made Mendeleev so important to science.

Look at your own periodic table and give an example of how the now modern periodic table is arranged.

Extension:

Next lesson will be looking the the atom.

Can you attempt to draw an atom and label all parts (Hint: Electrons, protons and neutrons)
