COUNCIL CORNER (highlights from Jan. 21st meeting)

Congregation Council Corner for the Newsletter:

- We had a wonderful and uplifting worship service with Family First Ministries on Sunday, January 19th. It was wonderful to foster relationships between our congrega-tions and allow us all to learn more about each other. We were all able to understand better the African American experience of life in Appleton through the “A Stone of Hope” display in the Congregational Life Room. The special offering going to Family First Ministries from this past Sunday’s worship service was $850.00. Wow!

- The Security Task Force continues to evaluate the safety and security of our building and grounds. They are con-tinuing to work with staff on potential safety plans.

- The Congregation Council has recently appointed the newly formed ‘Financial Sustainability in Ministry Task Force.’ The goal of this group will be to collaborate with Council, Staff, the Long Range Planning Team and the Stewardship Ministry, to evaluate the congregation’s current and future financial needs, suggest strategies to meet those needs, and report out to the congregation its findings as well as recommendations for the future fi-nancial sustainability of Prince of Peace at the Spring 2020 Congregational Meeting. This would contribute to the sustainment of Vision 2024 which was approved by the congregation at the 2019 Annual Meeting. Persons serving on this task force have been noted to possess gifts of organizational financial management and a pas-sion for applying that knowledge within the spiritual context of the ministry of Prince of Peace. They are: Kevin Kloehn, Tom Scheuerman, Jim Lee, Brian Reinhold, Dean Gruner and Mike Kalinowski.

2020 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION - BRIEF RECAP

The Annual Meeting of the Congregation was held Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 11:30 a.m.

Here are some highlights of the meeting:

The congregation voted to approve two amendments to our by-laws.

- The first one was in regards to undesignated gifts to Prince of Peace. After one year, the giver will be contacted to

determine a designation for the gift. If the giver still has no designation the gift will be distributed as follows: 10%

to the Mission Endowment Outreach Fund and 90% to the general fund.

- The second amendment was in regards to the establishment of a new ministry called “Connections to the Cross.”

This ministry will support faith formation of confirmed members and adult visitors.

The Congregation Council has appointed a “Financial Sustainability in Ministry Task Force.” Individuals serving are

Linda Neumann, Kevin Kloehn, Tom Scheuerman, Jim Lee, Dean Gruner, Bryan Reinhold, and Mike Kalinowski.

This group is charged with evaluating/creating a financial model to minimize and eventually eliminate future

budget deficits. They will report to the Council and bring their plan to our Spring Congregational Meeting in May.

Long Range Planning shared our accomplishments in 2019 as we ventured forward with Vision 2024. They also en-

couraged us to think about the opportunities that exist within the ELCA’s future projections of membership decline.

This is the time for us to think differently about who we are as Christians and how we can better meet current chal-

lenges in ministry. Sharing our faith stories, measuring what’s working and what isn’t, and connecting with others

outside our own walls will be vital to redefining who we are as a body of believers. Where would Jesus be in 2020?

We need to go where Jesus would go! ~ Submitted by Jean Lee, Council Secretary

Full meeting minutes will soon be posted in the Narthex.

What might God be up to? That is the question we have been pondering in the Faith Innovation group I am a part of

through the synod. This group is made up of pastors from a variety of Wisconsin synods and led by a Synod staff per-

son. Every month we come together via the computer in “Zoom” video meetings. We reflect on the question “What

might God be up to?” We do this by listening to God’s Word and reflect on it, choosing an ‘action- experiment’ to do

and then come back together the following month to discuss what we have learned. The point of the action-

experiments are to learn about ourselves and others, to see through the words and actions of ourselves and others,

what God might be up to.

In one of our sessions together, we looked at excerpts from Genesis 12 and 15 - the call of Abram. In this call,

Abram hears from God that he will have many descendants and also what will happen to those descendants. But

Abram can only see what he does not have. He is childless. He is worried he will have no descendants. As the church,

we often worry about our descendants, the youth - will they continue to practice their faith in ways we have shown

them? There are predictions of churches declining in the coming years. These predictions can be frightening, but they

are also a call to follow Jesus into what we can do differently to survive and to thrive. God says to Abram, “Do not be

afraid. I am your shield. Your reward will be great.”

Like Abram, it can be very hard for us to see beyond our circumstance at the moment. But the good news is that

God sees far beyond us and our circumstances and will lead us into new life. We do not know what the future of the

church will look like, but there will be a future. God will always be with God’s people. Jesus has made that known to us

in his life, death and resurrection. Before he ascended into heaven, he promised to be with us always; that promise

was fulfilled through the Holy Spirit. “Where two or three are gathered,” Jesus said, “I am in the midst of them.” Jesus

is with us to show us new ways of growing in faith and reaching out in love. Like Abram, we have to step out in faith, to

go trusting that God is with us to defend us, to strengthen us and to shape us into the future church, a church that is

still built on the promises of God’s love in Jesus Christ.

What might God be up to? Let us follow Jesus and find out!

storms, fires, droughts, and pests throughout the world.

It is paramount that we meet the challenge before us—to

rescue God’s earth for our children’s children. We do not

inherit this earth from those lived before us; instead, we

borrow it from those who will come after us.

I believe we cannot only save this ”garden of earth,” but

in doing so we will discover new forms of energy, new

industries and economic advancements, and along with

that, peace, and cleaner air, water and soil for healing of

all creation.

Part 4 will present some things we can do help reverse

or stop global climate change.

GODS EARTH—OUR HANDS (GEOH)

‘POINTS TO PONDER’ PART 3

This is part 3 in a series about climate

change written by Carin Allhiser, mem-

ber of POP Ministry team, God’s

Earth—Our Hands (parts 1 & 2 in December and January

newsletters)

Evidence for climate change:

In earlier articles we defined climate and explained the

causes of climate change (based on scientific research,

and over 97% scientists in agreement with these conclu-

sions and their causes).

The following lists some of the evidence for global cli-

mate change that is linked to human activities:

1. Average global air temperatures have risen in the last

150 years. (and 2016 and 2019 are the hottest

years ever recorded).

2. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the

burning of fossil fuels have risen in connection with

temperature increases.

3. Glaciers, ice sheets and ice shelves are melting in

historic levels—in turn raising sea levels (destroying

ecosystems like mango swamps, causing displace-

ment of people living in coastal areas).

4. Ocean temperatures are rising, killing coral reefs and

other sea life. Oceans can trap only so much heat

from atmosphere—we are near that limit.

5. Ocean acidification is increasing (killing sea life)

6. Ocean currants and jet streams are changing, caus-

ing weather modifications.

7. A rise in erratic weather patterns displayed in the se-

verity and frequency of storms worldwide (numbers

of tornados, hurricanes, super-cell storms are grow-

ing).

8. Increases in floods and flood levels worldwide.

9. Increases in locations of heat-waves and droughts.

10. Changes in ecosystems such as fisheries, forest type

shifts, species location shifts and increase in inva-

sive species.

11. Increasing temperatures favor an expansion in loca-

tions of pests, diseases and other vectors.

12. Rise in frequency and severity of fires—which destroy

forests (forests are carbon sinks, which capture car-

bon dioxide that can in turn reduce air tempera-

tures).

Remember, the climate system connects the atmos-

phere, the oceans and the land. This interconnectedness

means that modifications in one part can change all fac-

ets of the system.

Climate change is a leading cause of global hunger in the

past few years. It is creating climate refugees due to

drought and rising ocean levels. It is causing extinctions

of species. Financial hardships face communities hit by

1.Q: When is the library open?

A: Whenever the church is open and there are

no activities scheduled for the library, you have

access to the library.

2. Q: How do I find things in the library if there is

no one at the desk?

A: The library has a computer on the desk

which will need to be turned on. Instructions

are mounted on the left side of the monitor on

the wall of the desk enclosure

3. Q: How long can I keep materials?

A: The public library has a loan period of 1

month. For our purposes, 2 months should be

sufficient. You can always let me know if you

need more time. There are no fines unless a

book is lost. Please check your home libraries

as there are quite a few books that have been

out for more than two months.

4. Q: How do you decide what books/media to in-

clude in the library?

A: Although I’d like to, it’s physically impossible

for me to read every book, watch every DVD or

listen to every CD, so I have to rely on other re-

sources. Church librarians make recommenda-

tions at our semi-annual library association

meeting and the guest speaker is usually a

Christian author. PoP members have suggested

or requested books. The Family Christian radio

station (FM 91.9) interviews authors and I note

the books they discuss. In all cases, I check out

online reviews.

Watch for an upcoming SURVEY to determine

what materials you’d like to see in your library.

5. Q: Where do you get materials for the library?

A: Since the local Family Christian Bookstore

closed, I have purchased from Half-Price Books,

St. Patrick’s Bookstore and the Carpenter in

Little Chute. I order online from the Christian

Bookstore and Amazon. Watch for more answers to more questions

in next month’s Prints of Peace.

Spreading the Love through Prince of Peace

Helping Hands Outreach

Love Grows One by One Our Helping Hands Ministry (connecting members of our congregation in times of need and times of joy) provided many opportunities, building upon our outreach with our wonderful Prince of Peace volunteers of all ages. Some of our ongoing activities include:

As our church continues to grow, so do the opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ to serve others. Those feeling called to serve in this vibrant ministry, need only a love for God and a desire to reach out to those in need in our church and community. Volunteers can participate as often or as seldom as they’d like.

We are so grateful to our volunteers who have offered their hands and their hearts in this important outreach. If you would like to become involved or know of someone who could benefit from one or more of our areas of outreach, please contact any our Helping Hands leaders, Erin Larson (chair) or Cindy Romnek. We could love to have your in-volvement! Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 16th – Helping Hands Sunday.

Our spring class for those interested will meet on Saturday, February 22 from 9:30 a.m. – Noon and will include a light lunch. Child care is available if requested. An informational letter will be sent out to all individuals or families who are interested in joining. Please RSVP by Monday, February 17th. GIFTS OF HOPE THANK YOUS! Please check out the Gifts of Hope “Thank you” card on the Witness Ministry board in the narthex. In December, before Christmas, POP provided gift boxes for 30 at-risk teenagers from Appleton East High School. We provided gift boxes containing many items such as shampoo, toothpaste, hats, socks, treats, candy, gift cards, homemade quilts and pillowcases. In return, each Appleton East student wrote a short heartfelt thank you to the Prince of Peace congrega-tion. Thank you to all who made a contribution to our wonderful “Gifts of Hope” community outreach program.

wiches on the griddle provided, it’s a great way to mingle

with Confirmation students and for them to get to know

you as well! We provide all the food and materials, so the

only thing you need to bring is YOURSELF around 5:20 to

serve’em up by 5:30. Have questions? Email Brigetta

Wingender ([email protected]) or sign up on

the bulletin board outside her office, for a one time gig or

many!!

JoyUS - A SPECIAL NEEDS WORSHIP SERVICE

In the fall of 2019, Prince of Peace was invited to be

a part of a new initiative called ’JoyUS,’ formed to

offer an ecumenical community worship service

specifically designed for individuals with Special

Needs and their families. We are very grateful and

excited for this opportunity to help support and co-

ordinate this initiative to provide a meaningful and

inclusive worship in the Fox Cities. Multiple

churches are pulling resources together to make

this happen and the first service will be offered on

February 9th, 2020 at 2 pm at Christ the King

Lutheran Church.
