CIRPA submits proposalThe 150 -strong Canadian IndependentRecord Production Association (CIRPA) hastabled a well -written and in-depth look at themusic industry in Ontario, a report that wascommissioned by the Ministry of Citizenshipand Culture (The Honourable Lily Munro -Minister). The report was authored by EarlRosen, Executive Director of CIRPA andowner of Marquis Records; J. StephenStohn, entertainment lawyer in the firm ofMcCarthy & McCarthy; Donna Murphy,Editor of the Canadian Record Catalogueand researcher with CIRPA; and PaulCastellarin, a research assistant with CIRPA.

The report recommends "initiatives tocomplement the federal program (a$5 -million a year grant recently authorized bythe Department of Communications throughtheir Sound Recording Development Pro-gram, awarded annually for the next 5 years),and capitalize on Ontario's unique role in therecord industry." The report also recom-mends that "Ontario should emphasize pro-grams which increase the strength of themarketing and distribution of Canadianrecords, thus ensuring that audiences have ac-cess to Canadian music and that Canadianrecord companies can strengthen theireconomic base."

CIRPA is asking the Ontario govern-ment for $2.8 million in annual grants overthe next 5 years, which is broken down asfollows:

$1.5 million to promote domestic

Toronto's CHFI rollingwith new $250,000 sound"It took 6 months and cost $250,000, butOh! .. it sound so good," says Judy Burrell,Promotions Manager for Toronto's CHFIFM. Burrell is referring to the station's newstate-of-the-art broadcast studio, which wentto air at 7 pm (Feb. 9) when on -air personali-ty Lori Grant pressed the button.

The construction of the new studiobegan last August "after it became apparentthat our old studio couldn't maintain CHFI'stechnical excellence much longer," explainsBurrell, continuing with "The decision wasmade to build a new master control, updatethe newsroom and, because it got caught inthe middle, the lobby has a new look aswell."

Architect Glenn Piotroski and accousticconsultant Neil Muncy designed a studiodescribed as "unique in Canada," being thefirst radio broadcast studio to combineL.E.D.E. (Live End, Dead End) accousticdesign with R.P.G. panels, creating "an op-timum listening environment."

The studio is equipped with a McCurdyconsole, 2 Technics turntables, and 2 Studerreel-to-reel machines. Also added were 3Studer compact disc players. Says Burrell,"CHFI has led the pack in introducinglisteners to the concept of CDs, and we'vebuilt up a reputation in that area. Currently,over 50 percent of our music is on CD, andthat will increase with availability."

Burrell concludes with, "We believe theentire project reinforces CHFI FM98's com-mitment to provide our listeners with the bestsound possible."

$500,000 for international marketing ef-forts, trade shows, tour support, and promo-tional trips of Ontario -based record labelsand music publishers;

$300,000 to FACTOR/CTL for use inthe production of specialized records;

$200,000 to music trade associations foruse in research, training seminars, and skillsupgrading;

$300,000 for research studies on theCanadian and worldwide record industry.

The report also asks that a loan programfor long-term financing be provided for On-tario record distribution companies.

There is also a recommendation that theOntario government should press the federalgovernment on several matters including theintroduction of copyright legislation that willincrease the penalities for record piracy andprotect copyrights; and the support of afederal levy on blank tape and home recor-ding equipment, to discourage home tapingand to compensate performers and recordcompanies for lost sales attributed to hometaping.

It was also recommended that the ex-isting exemption from the 10 percent Ontariosales tax on tickets of concerts featuringCanadian performers should be continued,and that concert promoters, promoting non -Canadian headline acts, should be able todeduct a substantial portion of the fees paidto Canadian opening acts from the Ontariosales tax payable.

All configuration releasefor Rock And HydeCapitol held a listening session at Toronto'sSounds Interchange (Feb. 17), to launch therelease of Rock And Hyde's new LP, UnderThe Volcano. This was a rare, if not first timeevent, with album, cassette and CD con-figurations available for the session. The CDproduct was supplied by Praxis Technologiesof Toronto, making Under The Volcano, anall -Canadian project.

Sounds Interchange was packed withretail, radio, and specialized press people, aswell as a large contingent from the labelitself. MuchMusic, as always, was on hand totape the proceedings, another event "not im-portant enough" for CBC and CTV to cover.

Needless to say, the concensus of opi-nion would indicate that Capitol has anotherhit act, to join their already impressive Can -con roster.

As well as playing several tracks fromthe Rock And Hyde album, including theircurrent single, Dirty Water, a rough cut ofthe Dirty Water video was shown.

The single apparently caught several pro-grammers off guard, many of whom werequick to recognize its potential with im-mediate chart adds.

Springsteen set "not overyet" - says CBS' OatesChecking the industry on sell -through ofpopular product from the December salesbonanza, it wasrevealed that con-trary to rumour, theBruce Springsteen5 -record set, was stillselling well. "It's aperception situationwe're dealing with,"explains Don Oates,Vice President Sales& Marketing forCBS. "We askedsome dealers how Don Oatesthe box set was selling and a few answered,`it's not doing very well'. We discovered thatseveral were selling 5 or more each week.Well, if you sell 5 a week and convert that tobeing a 5 -record set with 4 times the price,that's like moving a minimum of 20 to 25records of something else. When this was ex-plained to the dealers, they agreed and sud-denly realized the set wasn't doing so badlyafter all."

Oates continues with "Springteen is farfrom over, and Fire, the new single is beingactively added at radio stations across thecountry."

On another subject, Oates was askedabout the state of returns, being as this is theperiod for this type activity. "As far asreturns are concerned, we're seeing an in-crease," Oates answers, "but not an increaseover last year at this point in time. This is justa heavy return period - just like in the fall,when we see increased sales from the sum-mer, which you expect because the fall is theheaviest sales period."

Oates went on to point out that "The ac-counts we've spoken to and processed returnsfor, aren't indicating any heavier return thanlast year. In fact, the control system in placein the organization, will allow for reducedreturns year after year." He concludes with"No specific album stands out, for sure, andthe overall return is well within line for thistime of year."

SCI to address problems facingGary Moffet, former member of April Wine,has teamed with respected producer GarySzawlowski to head SCI Productions. Apartfrom producing albums for various labelsacts last year, the company offers a com-prehensive and "economical" recordingpackage for new Canadian talent faced withthe problem of limited funding.

"We've been able to present veryeconomical budgets," Moffet begins, "wherethey can actually come to Montreal and getthe job done cheaper than it would be in theirown hometown." SCI has invested in midisystems, digital drum computers and digitalprocessing equipment, which makes theirlow -rate studios competitive.

"It makes those studios into, in ourestimation, competitive with the kind of thingthat's going on in radio today," continuesMoffet. "We're able to deliver those kinds ofquality to artists who have limited funding."

For the independent bands, SCI offers cost efficient production, as well as counsell- ing, before delivering a record -ready master.

"We have seen a hundred thousand different ways that money was spent improperly,"

Moffet explains, "or that money was spent excessively

. . . or where money was wasted.

You learn by all those things and how you can cut down, and how you can be more effi-

cient. I'd say if there was one word that would sum it up, it would probably be

homework." Moffet and Szawlowski cut down the

number of hours spent in the studio by com- pleting pre -production at home, on their

computer -based systems. "It's not really a novel idea," answers Moffet. "I would say

however, that it is the trend in the future. The technology of the new equipment tends to be

going in that direction, where you can do a lot of the work at home.

"We provide them with a way of being heard and heard in the best possible light. And, as far as we're concerned, this is the best possible direction for our company

because we will actually be developing our ar- tists for the future, rather than trying to find new artists, who are already established.

"It's just knowing how to spend your money properly," he concludes. "There's a

want a story, and that's our job." The

task of breaking new artists, and their art, doesn't fall on the

shoulders of radio or retail, it's the solid

"Some stations have gone gold or tightened up their formats however, there are

some in radio who still give acts a shot," he continues. "I think retail inventories are very

much like radio programmes today . . . there's very limited space. And retail is just as

tight as radio." Bands that are victims of this type of

situation include Karl Wallinger's World Par- ty, and the U.K.'s Housemartins. Steve Earle

and Alice Cooper have provided "surprises" for Tennant, both now approaching the gold

lot of talent out there not knowing what to do, or how to approach a record company. We try to help by giving them advice on how to make contacts and how to get their pro-

duct into the right hands."

Good sell -through for Capitol on West Coast

"The first few weeks of this year have been very good for us," says Capitol's Western

Region Branch Manager, Brad Morrissey. "The sell -through has been better than we

had expected, and we are currently hot with Robbie Nevil and Glass Tiger." As Morrissey points out, the big news

for the label in Vancouver is the release of the Beatles on CD. "There has been excellent

response at retail on this release," says Mor- rissey.

He does point out however, there have been a few complaints that retail is soft on the West Coast, "but we certainly haven't ex-

perienced any downward shift," he con- tinues. "The overall picture looks good here. Radio is very responsive. It's come around quite nicely."

As far as future product is concerned. "No predictions," says Morrissey, "It's all

going to sell. We have a lot of hot product on the market, and more on the way."

its release late last year, MCA have recently shipped the single, Ship Of Fools, from the

World Party album Private Revolution. "It's starting to get AOR numbers based on sales,

based on airplay," says Tennant. "They're finally realizing it's a great song, and they're

making it fit and it's performing. It's getting great phone calls right across North America.

"That's ammunition for retailers to realize this could be a seller for them, and that's really what they're concerned about when it comes right down to it. How many

records are they going to sell?" The story is quite different for the Hull

- based Housemartins, who have had no com-

mercial airplay either. However, "with basically just college airplay, word-of-mouth

and retail support," the album has sold in ex- cess of 11,000 copies already," Tennant ex-

plains. The band's first domestically -released

single, Happy Hour (U.K. No. 3), is now be- ing serviced to radio and the clubs. "It's a

project -

unlike World Party -

that has no airplay and it's selling. It's just a real good record. A clean pop record that's platinum in

the U.K." he adds. Steve Earle's Guitar Town, released last

March, has started to cross over from coun- try to the CHR charts. For what Tennant

terms a "hip retail record. It's taken a year, but 50,000 records is a lot of money."

Finally, "with absolutely no airplay," Alice Cooper's Constrictor album is selling so well, Tennant hopes to present gold to the

veteran rocker before his Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens' date, which has been switched from a concert bowl to a full Gardens show.

Disque Americ opened Juncmany doors at MIDEM by CWith their compact disc manufacturingfacilities located in Drummondville, Quebec,Disque Americ's first trip to MIDEM was"extremely beneficial," says Andy Nagy,Vice President of Marketing.

"Moreso . . . from the standpointthat our product was analyzed," continuesNagy, "and from that quality standpoint, wegot a very good rating from our foreign com-petitors."

Disque Americ will now be supplyingquotes to various independent labels as aresult of their participation at MIDEMbecause of the U.S. control of manufacturingplants by the majors.

"Many of the majors have their own CDmanufacturing facilities and, in other cases,they are still dominating the few CD plantsthat are available in America," Nagy con-tinues, "therefore, the independents certainlyappear to be looking for additional sourcesoutside the U.S."

For Nagy, it was actually his 17th ap-pearance at MIDEM and plans are alreadyunderway to attend again next year. "Ab-solutely," says Nagy, "It was so very effec-tive for us. It gave us a tremendous amountof exposure and visibility, and I don't believethere's any other way we could have gottenthat much exposure, visibility and attentionas we did in that one particular location."

One of the annual highlights at the Canadabooth is the mid -way reception in thePalais that draws hordes of hungry delegates.

Juno CD distributed by CARAS at MIDEM An attractive compact disc package, featur- ing the songs of this past year's Juno winners,

was distributed to international attendees at M1DEM '87. Also listed on the insert card

were the nominees, which CARAS Executive Director Daisy Falle, "gives a general idea of

the scope of our industry." The CD's were manufactured by Quebec's Americ Disc and are a continuation

of Radio Canada's efforts, who, over the past few years, have distributed a compila- tion of previous Juno winners to their inter-

national affiliates. "We were approached by Americ Disc,

who wanted to do this promotion at their MIDEM booth," Falle explains. "as a sam-

ple of what they can do and, of course, in-

crease the profile of our winners." Following collection of the masters and

publishing, permission was granted to pro- duce 2,500 of the CD's, 600 of which went to

MIDEM.

Philips & Sony heating up CD market with CDV

At the recent MIDEM conference, PolyGram created a great deal of interest with a private

showing of their Compact Disc Video, which will be marketed jointly by NV Philips of the

Netherlands and Sony Corp of Japan. The lid is being kept on the new technology until next

fall. Singles reportedly carry 6 minutes of

video and 20 minutes of music, and are ex- pected to retail in the U.S. for $7.50

$350,000 in studio time offered for Rocksearch

One of the richest prizes ever offered in studio time is in the offing for the winner of

the first national rock music competition fly- ing the banner of Rocksearch. Bob Moriano,

who is organizing the 4 -day event, to be held at Montreal's Velodrome (Apr. 8 through

11), reports "exceptional support from radio and the performing rights organizations, as well as local television. Hopefully there will

be national television coverage as well."

With Trebas Institute putting up a bank of studio time worth $350,000, Moriano sees

Rocksearch as "the start of a good support system for people like FACTOR and CIRPA

for all the different homegrowns available on a national scale."

A pre -selection board of adjudicators will select 12 rock acts from across Canada, and the last day (11), 3 semi-finalists will

compete for the grand prize. A $25.00 entry fee (money order) which is non-refundable

must be submitted with the act's demo, which must comprise only 2 selections, written for

or by the act. If there is a video available, this can also be submitted, but it is not necessary.

Moriano is calling a press conference in Montreal on Feb. 26, at which time more in-

formation on Rocksearch will be made available.

Publishers not impressed with this year's MIDEM

"I thought it was a lot slower than last year," points out Wayne Patton, Senior Director of

SBK Entertainment World Canada, when asked about this year's MIDEM. "I went for

the creative meetings with the other Directors of SBK. I did find however, that the Palais

certainly had less people than in previous years."

Ron Solleveld, a Director for RCA/Ariola International, says that "certain

things were achieved," but mainly it was "an opportunity to get together with our new in- ternational team."

RCA/Ariola recently became a part of Germany's Bertelsman Corporation.

Solleveld does point out however, "a lot of product" exchanged hands. In particular, he mentions, "It looks very good for (country

act) Kelita, and we managed to place a few copyrights for several of our writers."

Although both Patton and Solleveld sug- gest the annual trip "is useful," they were

critical of the increased cost doing business in Cannes. "It's getting ridiculously

expensive," adds Solleveld. "The last couple of years, prices have skyrocketed. Can you

believe $75.00 for a cab ride from the airport

. .. and $5.00 for a perrier . .

and $10.00 for

a beer?"

With the release of Veronique Beliveau's newalbum next month, which has been precededby the single, Make A Move On Me, thebona -fide Quebec superstar will finally have achance to prove to the rest of Canada whather fellow provincial natives have known forthe past ten years.

The singer, or "interpreter" as sheprefers, has released four records already(two for RCA and two for A&M), but nonein English so far.

"When I signed with A&M," Beliveauexplains, "I was hoping to do something inEnglish in the near future. Because, with thefact that I was changing my style of music, Iwas also in direct competition with what'shappening in English all over the world.

"What sells in Quebec for pop -rock iswhat sells all over the world. It's always bet-ter if you sing for the biggest public you can,so I always wanted to do something inEnglish. Now," she continues, "it's happen-ing and I'm very happy. Also, for the pasttwo years there's been a demand for me inEnglish Canada."

The demand began when Beliveau sangat the 1984 Juno Awards ceremony. Fromthere she was invited to participate in therecording of Tears Are Not Enough, the onlyfemale Quebec singer to be featured. Lastyear, at Expo's opening gala, Beliveau per-formed much to the delight of Prince Charlesand Lady Diana, among others.

"The market in Quebec is so limited thatyou can have a big, big hit and have sold25,000 albums. Maybe you can go to 80,000records, but not very often," Beliveau ad-vises. "One song may do that if it's a biggeneral public hit, like a romantic Frenchballad."

However, the songstress has changedmusical direction since the early recordingsand although there are ballads on the newalbum, it's not where she claims she'sheading.

Veronique Beliveau puts talent upfront - nationally

With the release of Veronique Beliveau's new album next month, which has been preceded

by the single, Make A Move On Me, the bona -fide Quebec superstar will finally have a

chance to prove to the rest of Canada what her fellow provincial natives have known for the past ten years.

The singer, or "interpreter" as she prefers, has released four records already

they go for the dance songs. But it's not like Corey Hart heading for the young girls, of

course. I think it'll go for young adults because that's the style of music it is.

Her forthcoming album was produced by John Dexter, who wrote Loverboy's

Heaven In Your Eyes, and features songwriters J.C. Crowley, Eddie Schwartz,

and Dave Tyson, as well -as Dexter. Studios were used in Vancouver, Los Angeles and

Toronto. "I was in the studio . . .

12, maybe 14 hours a day," she continues. "We were

just working, working, working . . .

but the musicians who came to play just loved the

songs. "The ballads are really, really nice. They

are kind of rocky," she adds. "They have

guitar solos and all that, but they're going to reach a much larger audience."

Beliveau's classical piano training at boarding school, many years ago, no longer

counts, when asked whether she could play any musical instrument. "I have knowledge of music, but I don't write," she confides. "I

love singing and dancing, that's what I prefer to do."

Having now performed professionally for over 14 years, Beliveau believes the North

American market will embrace her music, hopefully. "We decided to go for that market

because my sound was more North American than European. As for French artists going over there

. . . it's different

. . . it's another

approach to your career, but that's something I'm also interested in. For the mo-

ment," she concludes, "we want to go for the North American market

. . . that is our main

focus."

Russia warming to rock composers and musicians Moscow's rock composers and musicians

now have their own association called The Rock Club. The inaugural meeting was held

in late January. Just a year or two ago, rock musicians

here met with indifference and even hostility, from some of those in charge of cultural af- fairs, organization of concerts, recording and

provision of instruments. The following word from a song by Viktor Tsoi, leader of

Lenigrad's Cinema rock group, reflects the sentiments of many rockers in that period:

"Our hearts long for change, our eyes long for change."

Today, rock groups, formerly known mostly through semi -amateur tape recordings called underground rock in the West, have been given a big break. They have even been

appearing regularly on national TV. Since autumn 1985, The Rock Laboratory (an association of amateur rock musicians), has been functioning in Moscow

(the Western press christened it The Rock Club). Amateur rock musicians now have the

opportunity to perform in front of large au- diences, on radio and TV, and cut LPs. Unlike professionals, who get salaries from concert organizers, they are paid only for

each performance. Some of the best amateur groups have decided to turn professional.

The situation of professional rock musi- cians has also seen a change for the better,

but there are still problems. For instance, they are paid less than "serious" musicians,

or those in pop or folk. The Rock Club, which has won the sup-

port of the Russian federation's ministry of culture, will handle those matters. Veteran

Soviet rock composer and singer, Alexander Gradski, 37, is its elected board chairman.

This is not just another rock club like those established earlier in 13 Soviet cities. It has its

own rules and programme. The board members include leaders of

tne most popular groups, such as Andrei Makarevich (Time Machine) and Alexander Sitkovetski (his group Autograph, which is

into progressive rock, took part in Live Aid, and is currently touring Canada), Artem

Troitksi, a music critic, Matvei Anichkin, producer of the hard rock group Cruise (Troitski and Anichkin were initiators of the Account 904 Chernobyl benefit concert), as

well as rock -poets and producers, and jour- nalist Dmitri Shavyrin, rock -music commen- tator for Moskovski Komsomolets

newspaper. "Our purpose in organizing the club is to

assert rock as a full-fledged trend in music," said Alexander Gradski. "The groups have

better opportunities today, but some pro- blems still persist. For instance, rock musi- cians' salaries are uniform and do not depend

on popularity. Advertising needs con- siderable improvement and there is not a

single periodical entirely devoted to rock music." An expert council, including the more

competent rock composers and performers will be established at the Club. Their judge-

ment will be weighed heavily next to that of the expert councils already in existence in

radio and TV, and the Melodia recording firm and concert organizations.

The establishement of the Rock Club was facilitated by the Moscow Gagarin

district Komsomol local,, which has also sponsored rock music festivals, such as the

Rock -Panorama -86 last May involving many Soviet rock stars, and a rock -poetry festival

last November. The local's first secretary, Pyotr Pavlov, believes that every trend in rock music must be promoted and that the time is ripe to put all forms of rock on the

stage. For a start, the Rock Club is going to

hold a Rock -Panorama -87 festival from Apr. 23 through 29. It is to be an even bigger event

than last year's Panorama. It will present every rock style, from rockabilly to heavy

metal. Forty-nine groups have been invited, including Moscow professionals, Aria,

Bravo, Quadro, Cruise, Rock Studio, Black Coffee and Computer, and amateurs

S -Team, Mu Sounds and Nicolas Copernicus. This year's Panorama will be the first

Following several European dates, Hart and the band will be playing a string of

sellout dates in Japan, with Australia to follow before his extended tour of the U.S.

and finally, Canada during the summer. Hart's current single, Can't Help Falling

In Love, is gold in Canada and new in the U.S. Top 30, and just released in the rest of

the world. His next single, Dancing With My Mirror features his first ever dance mix for which a video has also been completed.

In view of Hart's recent heavy exposure on American television, there have been

many questions asked regarding a possible film debut. Hart explained that he would

rather make an announcement than speculate, but he admitted that he is "very in- terested" in some recent film offers.

to shoot new video The Box were part of a 3 -day video shoot, for one of two videos for their upcoming single,

Closer Together, which began Feb. 19 at Montreal's Forum. The shoot featured the

Montreal Canadiens. The special video is be- ing prepared in support of Leucan (Leukemia

Canada), with members of The Box testing their skating and stick handling with the likes

of Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey and Mats Naslund. The 20 -min video will be sold across

the country, with all proceeds being donated to Leukemia research. The video is expected to hit the market Mar. 20.

Alert's Lisa Zbitnew reports that the week of Mar. 20 will also see the release of The Box's actual music video, explaining,

"This one will be shot in the Dominican Republic, Mar. 6 through 12, with airfare courtesy of a local Montreal travel agency."

Cray and Beck featured on Jagger's next solo LP Mick Jagger's upcoming album, his second,

will feature the guitar talents of Jeff Beck and Robert Cray. Production is currently under-

way at the Blue Wave Studios, with Dave Stewart at the helm.

Ralph Dunning has been appointed sales representative for RCA/Ariola in Ontario.

He will strengthen RCA's sales team compris- ed of Peter Piasecki and Greg Pappas.

Dunning has been associated with RCA as Ontario field merchandiser since February of 1985, and is credited with "successfully

creating and executing sales -related events, promotions and incentives at a point -of -

purchase level." Dunning is furthering his career objec-

tives through part-time courses in interna- tional and industrial marketing, while work-

The latest Gordon Lightfoot single release from Warner Bros, East Of Midnight, has

caught on quickly with A/C programmers with immediate adds. There has also been a show of strength at the country level for this

Lightfoot production, the title track of his current album.

The flip, "I'll Tag Along, was also pro- duced by Lightfoot, who also wrote both sides.

Stoker Brothers, now releasing on the RCA label, took advantage of Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), and shipped their newest single in a cute heartshaped Valentine's card. The title

of the single, Listen To My Heart, is displayed on the front of the card, and the gatefold opens to display the actual single,

along with the lyrics to the song. The lyrics were written by Mickey, D.J. and X. Stoker with production by Mickey and Rick

Whitelaw.

More Cancon from RCA Besides the Stoker Brothers' single (mention-

ed above), RCA has shipped another im- pressive package of Cancon country singles.

These are Terry Christenson's Summer Heart, Terry Cousineau's Will So Long Do,

and Hotel Mexico by Dick Damron. The lat- ter is Dick's follow-up to 1965, which had a

good run up the charts. Christenson is a well- known folk singer from a few years ago, who

previously released on his own Harvestholm label. This is a Christenson original, which he

produced himself.

Finally ... k.d.lang !! That's no typo

. . . that's how this classy lady

from Alberta wants to be known . . . k.d.lang, plus the reclines, of course. She was

showcased at Toronto's Horseshoe (Feb. 18), the launch date for her debut Sire album,

Angel With A Lariat. k.d., who might fall in- to the category of having a "cult" following,

will destroy that myth shortly. Her talent, coupled with the enthusiasm of the WEA

crew, should make this one of the top Cancon acts for Sire

- their only one.

Johnny Burke readies new single Veronica Mataseje, President of Acclaim Records, sends news from Nashville that

Bob Mauro sets dates for Country Symposium

Longtime record veteran, Bob Mauro, most recently with Quality Records, has organized

a Canadian -Country Music Symposium at Toronto's Howard Johnston Hotel (Hwy 401

and Markham Rd) for Saturday Mar. 21. The reason for the symposium is "to

present an overview of the country music in- dustry," explains Mauro, "and to identify

problems and offer solutions. Of course, there will be an open question and answer

follow-up." Mauro, who is Consumer Awareness

Director of the Canadian Country Music Association, will chair the meeting with a

panel of experts from the music and broad- cast industries. These will include: John

Schroeder (producer), Greg Slaight (broad- caster), Larry Leblanc (music critic), Doug

Mills (rack jobber), John McBride (Roblan), Don Rodbard (graphic artist), Howard Green

(video and commercial producer), Anya Wilson -Leblanc (promoter), with Mauro also

filling the panelist position in the marketing area.

"The symposium should be of particular interest to artists, management firms and anyone directly related to Canada's music scene," says Mauro.

Attendance is restricted to 50 delegates. Those interested in registering should call

Alibi signs deal withSilver Dollar in U.K.Vancouver's popular contemporary countryband, Alibi, have signed a deal with SilverDollar in the U.K. to distribute their firstalbum. Diana Kelly, who represents the bandthrough Cloana Promotions of NewWestminster, will be in London, Englandfrom Mar. 6 through 13 where she expects tofirm a tour of the U.K. for the latter part ofthis year.

In the meantime, the band's latest single,It Only Hurts When I Cry, has been releasedin both Canada and the U.S. on the Kansas -based Comstock label. "Initial reaction tothe single has been great," says Kelly,"We're all very excited and gearing up for avery busy and productive 1987."

Dallas talent contest gaining in popularityDavid M. Peever, Agent for The Dallas Clubin Hamilton, Ont., reports that "After onlyfour short weeks of operation, the DallasCountry Singing Contest is taking off in finefashion." There will be a grand prize of atleast $5,000 to the eventual winner on Dec.17, 1987, as well as many other cash prizes torunner-ups.

Peever also reports that entries are com-ing in from as far away as North Bay, "andwe've even had calls from Winnipeg," saysPeever. The talent shows are held each Tues-day night at the Barton Street East club, with

the quarter -finals to be held there as well.

The contest is being promoted byCHAM Country and the Dallas Club withCHAM's "beautiful" C.J. as the hostess forthe evening.
