WINNERGlenhaven Dental CareTaff’s Well, Cardiff, WalesStarted as a dental practice in a family home over 100 years ago, the building was extended and restyled over the years as the business grew, but in 2009 a huge renovation was planned, extending the main building into the large garden plot. The vision of husband and wife owners and dentist Colin Griffiths and practice manager Denise included, ‘For patients to have a visual experience that matches the clinical expertise of the clinicians, in a relaxing, friendly, efficient atmosphere. To take an old building and breathe new life into it, creating a place that is light, modern and airy. We wanted the practice to feel warm, inviting, light, friendly and modern, We wanted a fantastic place to work, with tradition and quality at its heart.’

This was certainly achieved, with the brand new surgeries featuring domed roofs with skylights, and the two main surgeries and patient waiting room looking out onto the private landscaped internal courtyard area created by architect Barry Mayled. The spacious practice is sensibly divided into patient areas, the ‘clinical suite’ and staff areas, with a friendly ‘non-corporate’ feel.

Denise comments, ‘Along with Barry, we took a dark and traditional property, introduced as much light as possible, including domed sky lights into the new surgeries, hallways and dedicated hygienist surgery. We were able to provide five new surgeries, two new specialist treatment rooms, a consultation room, again with domed skylight, a separate decontamination unit and separate X-ray room. modernise our computer system to enable the new updated Exact programme to work efficiently all around the practice.

The judges felt the strong design and modern feel fitted the beautiful surroundings perfectly, making real a strong vision. Glenhaven is a more than worthy winner of the PPD Style Award.

hIGhly COMMeNDeDHarley Street Dental StudioLondonOverhauling an entire six floor listed Georgian town house in the heart of London’s medical district is a gargantuan task, but one which co-owners and principals Mark Hughes and Adam Thorne have accomplished with aplomb at 52 Harley Street. Attention to detail was key in the complete renovation of 34 rooms, with a passion and dedication to deliver only the highest standards.

The practice commented, ‘Our passion and personalisation went into every room from our Chrysler desk to the original art deco brass staircase to the hand-selected Murano chandeliers and unique artwork supplied by talented patients. We needed to speak of luxury but not opulence or extravagance with a whisper of style and sophistication that exuded confidence and reassures our patients of the medical excellence provided by our teams.’

Reclaimed original features are complemented by contemporary additions, with a soothing colour palette and bright, modern and clean surgeries both fitting seamlessly into the practice environment.

EXACT V11 automatically recognises when an appointment is booked a defined number of days in the future and then prompts the receptionist to ask whether the patient would like an earlier appointment should a gap arise- the software will suggest a list of names ideally suited to fill a gap, with options to call or text patients, minimising the time necessary to complete these processes and maximising the amount of chair-time used.
