A quota system is a policy of limiting the number of minority group

members in a business firm, school, and any hiring or admissions policyrequiring that a specified number or percentage of minority group

    members be hired or admitted.(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/quota%20system).

In United Kingdom, a quota system is being used in areas of

education and human development, economic affairs, environment andplanning, government and law, industry and employment, and social affairs.

This quota system is used to appoint the strongest candidates for the areas.

In Malaysia, another quota system is being used in the school

which is a requirement so that deserving students can enter designatedschools. The quota system is said to be able to select the best students

based on the academic performance and co-curricular activities (Dr.

    Brandon 2008).

In the Philippines, the screening for quota is evident in our

schools like in University of the Philippines(UP) wherein once a student isqualified to enter the campus, he is then screened for acceptance into

one of the degree programs he chose complying the requirements.

In Northern Luzon, Saint Louis University (SLU) utilizes the quotasystem in different colleges like the College of Natural Sciences (CNS)wherein a student should not fail any general subjects during their first

and second years; must not fail 40 percent of the total units for thesemester and major subjects for two (2) consecutive times during their

third and fourth years thus if the student will not comply with this criteriathey will not be allowed to continue taking the course in the said

    department.

Another college that utilizes the quota system is the College ofNursing which aims to select the deserving students who exemplifiesacademic excellence and trained with good moral conduct to enter

level II and subsequently level III. It is being utilized to maintain thestandards of SLU being the center of excellence in the College of

Nursing and to produce globally competitive nurses.

Achievement of strong ego-identity, a representation of continuity in

the ego's integrating functioning and sense of oneself as distinctidentity (Erik Erickson, 1959, 1968 Identity and the Life Cycle) due to the

quotas meaningful recognition of a persons achievements and

    accomplishments.

is ego diffusion which is a failure in optimal psychological

development (Erik Erickson, 1968 Identity) and personality confusion

which is the inability to express inner self that leads to feeling ofdisorientation and inability to take inappropriate statements(Medline Plus 2008; Fundamentals of Nursing by Kozier and Erb's 5th

This research may help the institutions and the healthcareeducators to visualize the quota system by giving an overview on thetensions as well as identifying the problems (e.g. emotional distress) that

    the adolescents had undergone.

The health educators could teach the students different

coping mechanism when this phenomenon arises.

This research could alsoallow adolescents toverbalize their emotions

    and their concerns

regarding the chosentopic. This verbalizationcan help them airemotions.
