How long will the search take? How do can-didates apply? What is the Search Committee working on this week?

If you have questions about our search for a new Rector, the best place to start is now our Christ Church website. When you visit the website and click on “Our New Rector Search” you’ll fi nd a complete timeline and lots of detail about the search process. You’ll also fi nd a section called “What’s Happening Now?”, where we’ll be providing regular updates on an ongoing basis, at least weekly and sometimes even daily.

We’ll still be reporting on our progress through our written parish communications when something signifi cant happens, or when we feel it is particularly important that everyone be in-formed. But we hope all parishioners will make it a habit to visit the website regularly and stay on top of our search.

And of course, please feel free to contact any member of the Search Committee any time you have a specifi c question or thought you’d like to share.

May the Holy Spirit be among us, particularly throughout this transition and as we prepare for the future of our parish.

Nearly one billion people around the world lack access to safe, clean, affordable water. Our com-panion parish in rural Mexico is one such place. Together, we can change that. Join us this Lenten Season as we raise money to give the gift of clean water to the people of La Esperanza. The project is estimated to cost about $5,000 and will provide

enough clean water for the entire village. Look for the Water for Hope display in the new clois-ter and pick up your Lenten calendar and a recycled bottle for your daily donation. Mark your calendar now for our ingathering on Sunday, May 15th. Or simply add your donation to the large Water for Hope jug in the new cloister. Questions? Contact Lisa Kerpan [email protected] or 847-251-0920.

Refl ections on a Shared Ministry

The moving van pulled up to the Rectory on Tuesday, October 6, 1992. Ned, Bev, Elizabeth and Marnie Prevost and all their belongings moved into 458 Maple Street just two days prior to the 1992 fall Rummage Sale (for the Rummage affi ciando that is also one day prior to Presale.) How’s that for jumping in with both feet? In early May a moving van will once again be in front of the Rectory to move Ned and Bev on to the next phase of their life’s journey. (Notice they got smart and are not moving out anywhere near this year’s Rummage sale.) Between these two moving dates a vibrant, energetic almost nineteen year ministry ensued at Christ Church. I sat down in the Rectory among boxes and piles of belongings and had the chance to pause with Ned and Bev and ask them to refl ect on their ministry with us.

Bev remembers that “we were very excited and maybe a little scared about accept-ing the adventure of moving to Winnetka. But the parish was so welcoming to us, it felt like a match made in heaven. A big draw for Ned (and me) was the presence of Rummage and the importance of outreach in the Christ Church community.” Bev also notes that “hospitality has always been crucial to Ned and me – coming together, sharing a meal. We have watched the Hospitality Committee blossom into a huge part of this parish. There is a real sense of joy in coming together here.”

Looking back Ned feels that “the defi ning legacy of my ministry here will be the renovation and consolidation of all of our worship services and educational opportunities at the Church on the Hill in September of 2000. In my second Annual Address to the parish (1994) I started to pose some questions around the growing 9 am service (which was then held in the Chapel in the Parish House) and the need to ensure that our facilities were as open and welcoming as they could be.” When Ned arrived the number of parishioners was similar to what it is today, but the demographics have shifted. In 1992 the largest group was age 55 plus and young families were just coming back to the church. The congrega-tion was getting much younger and the trend continues today. The 9 am family service was quickly becoming SRO and something needed to be done. What followed was a very challenging phase in the life of our parish which culminated in the repurchase of the house at 700 Humbolt Avenue, its renovation and attachment to the Church on the Hill and the merging of all worship services and church school classes in one location at the Church on the Hill. With a few tears in her eyes (and a warm smile on her face) Bev says that “I will always, always remember standing on the stairs outside the McClain Room on that fi rst Sunday in our new space watching people stream in from all the various doors. It was a really big deal when the new building was opened.”

One of Ned’s inherent strengths has been his ability to hire and attract gifted and talented people to our staff: Richard Clemmitt to our music program, Melly Turner and Missy Harrison to our Children’s Ministry program and a string of excellent Curates and Associates: Steve Carlsen, Betsy Fowle, Patti Snickenberger, Lane Hensley, George Smith, Josh Walters, Jeanne Stewart and Jim Harrison. I asked Ned what was his secret to this success. “I think that Christ Church was, and is, perceived as a good place to learn ministry.” Reluctant to extol his own virtues Bev pipes up, “Ned is an excellent mentor. He shares everything: the weddings, the funerals, the baptisms, the preaching, the celebration of the Eucharist (even on major days such as Christmas and Easter.) Not everyone realizes that this doesn’t happen in many churches. Ned invites the Curates and Associates to share in the total ministry of this parish. He has also successfully mentored many seminarians along the way.” Ned believes that “there is a climate of stability on the staff that is very important to the parish and draws good people to the programmatic strengths of Christ Church.”

After the move to the Church on the Hill in 2000 Ned had a renewed sense of energy and believes that he “had earned a bit of capital with the congregation” which allowed him to try some new ideas within the parish. He credits the openness of the staff and volunteers to work through the best way to initiate ideas such as Global Mission, the recent Lenten Talent Challenge and current Glory Story into our everyday lives.

When asked to name their favorite memory of their time at Christ Church (granted a tough question) without hesitation they both answered, “singing in the choir.” Ned said, “Being members of the choir has really been special. It is something that Bev and I do together. It is a time when we are just regular people. We were lucky enough to have been a part of three of the six choir trips to England. The Salisbury Cathedral trip and last year’s choir trip to New York City were highlights for us.” He is also happy about having added the once a month Healing Service to our Sunday worship. “We offered a healing service at our churches in CT. It means a lot to Bev and me.”

To wrap up my interview I posed one fi nal question giving Bev fair warning that it might make her cry. “What will you miss the most here at Christ Church?” Tears welling Bev replied, “Everything!” Ned’s response was, “I will miss Sunday mornings the most. This is when everything comes together for me. I really believe that God put me here on Sunday mornings. Change is always, always hard. But as I sat in the pew at All Saints (Worcester, MA – which will be their new parish home when they relocate) I thought I can do this. I can be happy here with Bev at my side.” Being with Ned and Bev you just know that they can do anything in life as long as they do it together.

4) It can be as simple as buying lots of lettuce and delivering it to a fellow parishioner on the schedule to take it to A Just Harvest.

5) It can be as simple as purchasing apples or oranges and delivering them to a fellow parishioner on the schedule to take it to A Just Harvest. (Notice a pattern?)

6) You can sign up to just cook and there are EASY to follow recipes for the cooking-impaired. You then arrange to deliver the food to a fellow parishioner on the schedule to take it to A Just Harvest.
