The Christ Church Youth Choir is happy to announce its upcoming Hymn-a-thon to be held on Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Church on the Hill. This event will be a fund raiser for our Youth Choir’s trip to Canterbury Cathedral this summer and for its future trips.

All of you are invited to join in our singing that day and/or to support our Youth Choir with a donation. Our choir members (and you, too, if you’d like!) will spend the day singing one verse of every hymn in our hymnal. Those who participate for the full nine hours will fi nish our Hymn-a-thon having sung one verse each of seven hundred twenty hymns!

The boys and girls in our Youth Choir will be collecting sponsors to pledge so-much-per-hymn. Each singer will strive for his or her personal best in singing as many hymns as possible, the goal being to go the distance and sing the entire book. Please don’t be surprised when some enterprising young chorister approaches you to invite your sponsorship.

Our Youth Choir appreciates your support! Please consider joining us on Saturday, March 5 to praise God by singing and listening to the great hymns of the Church.

The average American uses more than 80 gallons of water each and every day, water that is clean and safe to drink. Millions of people around the world lack access to safe, clean drinking water, resulting in poor health, and even death. Our companion parish in rural Mexico needs our help. Water in the village is plentiful, but not potable. Together, we can change that. Join us this Lenten Season as we raise money to provide a water purifi cation system for our compan-ion parish in the rural village of La Esperanza. Esperanza means hope. Look for the “Water for Hope” display in the new cloister. We will be collecting donations throughout Lent. Don’t miss our kick-off fund-raising event, a “Mexican Carnaval” Pancake Supper on March 8. Questions? Contact Lisa Kerpan at 847-251-0920 or [email protected].

Talented Committee Aims to Ease Our Transition to New Leadership

As our parish undergoes the task of fi nding a new rector the Search Committee (refer to last month’s Parish Paper for a profi le if you missed it) is working in concert with our Transition Committee. “Transition” is a noun defi ned by the Merriam Webster dictionary as “a passage from one state, stage, subject or place to another: change.” This talented committee co-chaired by Joanne Hudson and Lawson Whitesides will help facilitate this change in our lives. As Lawson explains, “Our committee has two charges: to celebrate and honor Ned and Bev’s ministry and bid them a fond adieu as they relocate to Worcester, MA and to welcome our new rector and his or her family and to help them integrate into the life of Christ Church and Winnetka.” Our Vestry has wisely appointed two talented individuals to head up this important committee.

Lawson Whitesides was born the younger of two children in Cincinnati, OH and grew up at Christ Church in Glendale, OH. He attended Groton School in MA, went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, a Masters in the same fi eld from MIT and fi nally an MBA from Harvard. (Wow, that’s some serious academic credentials and he is really nice too!) After meeting his wife, Jane, on a blind date in Boston in 1972 and marrying her in 1973 they relocated to Chicago where Lawson had a long, successful and challenging career in investment management. They moved “up north” to Winnetka in 1976 and started attending

Christ Church in 1979 after Lawson’s stint on the Vestry at St. Chrysostom’s expired. He has served on our vestry three times (also as the Clerk to the vestry and twice as our treasurer.) He and Jane have been on fi ve choir trips to England where Lawson has been an enthusiastic supporter of the choir. For the upcoming choir trip to Canterbury this August he is looking forward to singing in the choir for the fi rst time. Lawson and Jane have three children: Lawson III (many know him as “Trip”) who is 32 and living in Dallas; Ellen, age 29, living in Cambridge, MA and Margaret who at 22 will be graduating from Northwestern University this June. When asked if he would take on the role as co-chair of the Transition Committee, he replied “I would be honored to serve if Joanne Hudson will be the other co-chair.” Good answer.

When Joanne Hudson was asked to serve she replied, “I would love to if Lawson would consider being the other co-chair.” A match made in heaven. Joanne, her twin brother and two other siblings were born in Fort Dodge, IA where Joanne lived until she left for college. (She said the most traumatic part of her childhood was when she switched bedrooms with her sister. How’s that for stability?) Joanne attended the University of Iowa where she earned a degree in Business. Her fi rst job out of college was with the Private Banking division of First Chicago Bank. Not only was it a great fi t, it is where she met her husband, Steve. After they were married they moved to Winnetka and “loosely” started attend-ing Christ Church in the early ‘90’s and became regular worshipers in 1998. Joanne has taught Sunday School for six years (she is currently on sabbatical) and is active with the Hospitality Committee. They have two children: Forrest (16) who is a sophomore at New Trier and Amy (13) an eighth grader at Washburne. Joanne and Steve own The Hudson Company, a local real estate fi rm, where their desks face each other, a sure sign of a very strong marriage.

Joanne’s current work with the Hospitality Committee will put her in good stead to direct the plans for the April 30 event in honor of Ned & Bev. “We’re planning a big party and will include many people who have touched Ned & Bev through-out their tenure at Christ Church. This evening party for adults will be held in the Great Hall and will be followed by a parish-wide brunch after the 9:30 service the next day (May 1). There are some surprises being planned for both events. We really want to honor and celebrate all that Ned and Bev have done here and to let everyone show their appreciation.” Lawson points out that on average a rector stays in a parish for seven years. “We are so very fortunate to have had Ned as long as we have.” More details to follow.

Once the new rector has been called to Christ Church the Transition Committee will once again kick into gear to plan a parish-wide “Welcome” party and perhaps some smaller gatherings to provide our new leader an opportunity to meet parishioners on a more intimate level. Both Lawson and Joanne have been very impressed by the talent and depth of their committee and look forward to the task entrusted to

Philanthropist-Humanitarian-Fundraiser: Morgan Fisher Started at Age 7; Continues Today at Age 11

When she was seven years old, Morgan Fisher – now a fi fth grader and member of the Christ Church choir – decided to contribute the savings she had set aside for “giving” to Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) to provide a latrine for an impoverished village in a developing country. Realizing that she would need an addi-tional $142 to complete her gift, she wrote to a small number of family and friends, requesting their assistance to help her make her goal. She not only reached her goal, but also exceeded it, and contributed the overage to the Christ Church Benevolence Fund. At that time, we wrote a brief article about Morgan for the Parish Paper.

Now at age eleven, Morgan is focusing on the children of earthquake-torn Haiti. With her passion to read and enthusiasm for learning, Morgan discovered that a small organization, Haiti Partners, works to educate 1600 students in seven Haitian schools and trains hundreds of teachers annually in innovative education methods. Haiti Partners describes their work as “Helping Haitians change Haiti.” Following catastrophic destruction through the massive earthquake on January 12, 2010, they

have rebuilt three of their schools and provided support and training to all seven. This year on January 14, Morgan met Maxandre, the Haitian principal of one of the three rebuilt schools, when he came to Chicago for a brief visit to talk about the enormous needs in post-earthquake Haiti. Maxandre told her about another of these schools, the Annonciation Community School, whose two-story building was irreparably damaged, and is in desperate need of help.

Spurred on by this new personal connection, Morgan set a goal to raise $500 to help rebuild the Annonciation Community School, beginning with her own contribution from her personal “giving” account as well as from letters to an expanded list of friends and relatives. To date, she has raised $1505 from her mailings!

Then, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, a new opportunity for fundraising was born. Morgan created a greeting card that parishioners could obtain by making a donation to Haiti Partners in honor of the recipient to whom they would send this special Valentine. Morgan offered these cards to parishioners following the services on Sunday, February 6 and 13. At the conclusion of her efforts, Morgan had sold 80 Valentine’s and raised a total of $800.

And while these events were unfolding, it was determined that the proceeds from the Clemmitts’ teddy bear project would be added to Morgan’s fundraising proceeds. With help from Madison (her younger sister), Morgan sold 40 teddy bears and raised an additional $200.

In addition to the money she raised through her letters and “sales,” Morgan also received an unexpected $1000 donation, bringing her total con-tribution to the work of Haiti Partners to $3505, signifi cantly in excess of her goal!

When asked why she wants to help people, without hesitation Morgan said, “It feels good to make other people feel good, and it inspires other people to DO good.” Morgan tells us that she is extremely grateful for the generosity of Christ Church parishioners.

If you want more information about Haiti Partners, go to www.haitipartners.org. Congratulations, Morgan, and thank you for all your good work.

Our Curate Jim Harrison spent a week this past January in Southeast Mexico with a delegation from the Diocese of Chicago. Here is his recol-lection of his visit to our companion parish of Jesus de Nazaret in La Esperanza, Oaxaca:

Tuesday after breakfast at Villa Esmerelda we were joined by Padre Victorino (he lives at the Anglican Centre in Tuxtepec) and he and I shared the back of the bus for our ride to see the two churches he has charge over. The church of San Paulo is in the village of Santa Maria Obispo – St. Mary the Bishop – a desperately poor community. Fr. Victorino was sent to close the parish 5 years ago when the congregation was down to one family. The family did not want to give up and there is now a small congregation with many, many needs. We heard a great story of faith from the mother of a family of nine which walks one hour every Sunday through the cane fi elds. She does so, in part, to honor the hard work of Fr. Victorino. One assumes that she and her husband made that walk today just to see us! Her testimony of determination was inspiring. It was diffi cult to get a sense for the community as it is the day for governmental assis-tance and many people were at the Centro de Opportunidades.

After our visit we re-boarded the bus for the bumpy and scenic ride to La Esperanza and Christ Church’s companion parish of Jesus de Nazaret. Fr. V. and I remained the quietest row on the bus – less a commentary on the loquacious nature of our fellow travelers and more refl ective of the fact that Fr. V. and I shared no common language! The Church of Jesus de Nazaret is quite the opposite from San Paulo. Jesus de Nazaret is 4 to 5 times larger and in quite good repair. Fr. Victorino has been at Jesus de Nazaret for 3 years. There was a higher percentage of men present than at any of the other sites we visited. We were treated to freshly cut cocoanuts to drink from. A tour of the property was an informative and inspiring testimony to the work that has taken place there in recent years.

The fellowship hall has no roof (Christ Church money for a roof was diverted to go for dirt to fi ll in an area on the property that had become a small pond of standing water). Jesus de Nazaret has a well on the property and while there is a pump, there remains need for permanent plumbing to get the water to the church – a mere 50 feet or so away. A cap for the well is also necessary. Eignar (Bishop Benito’s son) and Gary Martin have discussed the possibility of a water purifi cation system for the parish. We saw 4 or 5 systems in other villages – there are cur-rently 17 in the diocese. They can provide safe water to the entire community (beyond the church) as well as an income for those who maintain the system. There is an ideal location for a system at the end of the parish hall nearest the well, which is located at the rear corner of the prop-erty. This is a spot much in need of a block wall to replace the current chain link fence. The land behind the church is much higher and in the rainy season (late June through September) muddy runoff fl ows onto the church property and runs around the church. Fr. V. talked of caulking the windows of the church and I noticed some missing panes, as well as the need for glazing compound rather than caulk.

We met on the patio in front of the church to share greetings and blessings. After both bishops spoke, I had an opportunity to say a few words to our friends in La Esperanza. I brought greetings from Senor Gary Martin and all of Christ Church and spoke of how blessed I was to be able to touch their beautiful church and to shake the hands of those I’d only seen in photographs. I also said that I hoped to come back in June and be able to speak Spanish. A young woman commented that if I came more often I’d learn faster! Bishop Jeffrey Lee commented on the many ni-nos and ninas in the community and that it was probably why Christ Church was such a good fi t for Jesus de Nazaret – we have many children as well. The Senior Warden (or comparable) stood to tell us that whatever projects might happen this summer, we can count on their labor. He said they will be willing to work hard.

During our delicious lunch of tacquitos and salad, rice and chicken I asked Eignar to translate for me as I wanted to make sure that I greeted a young woman from the parish for Gary. After mispronouncing her name and having a young woman say that there was no one by that name, she asked if it was Adelina – which was in fact, she!

Subsequent to our visit, Eignar and I talked about the possibility of putting in a water purifi cation system. He said that Jesus de Nazaret was a good fi t for such a project and that the diocese would want to have the building built prior to our visit, with the installation of the system to occur while we are there so that we can fi nish the project and actually turn it on before we leave. Steve Paterson, who will be priested in Oaxaca on March 5, is part of the team who has installed all of the systems in the diocese. He explained that a covenant is signed in which the parish agrees that the purifi ed water is seen as a ministry – 25% of which must be given away to those who cannot afford it. The cost for the water to the larger community is minimal, only enough to cover maintenance of the system and a stipend for those who do the work.

If I were to rank their needs, I would put a water system at the top of the list, then a tin roof for the parish hall, followed by a block wall across the rear of the property and along the intersecting side at the ‘well’ corner. The Global Mission Committee has decided to investigate the poten-tial of Christ Church providing a water purifi cation system at the church of Jesus de Nazaret. We will be providing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (Carnaval), March 8, as a kickoff for the “Water for Hope” parish-wide Lenten project. Please talk to Jim Harrison or Gary Martin if you are interested in going to La Esperanza (Hope) on our mission trip, June 13-17.
