As we approach Fair—it might be good to review a couple of things some of us seasoned

4-Her’s take for granted.

Why do we participate in fair and just exactly what do those ribbon placings mean?

Goals for 4-H’ers at county fair:

• 4-H’ers have an opportunity to demonstrate and communicate what they have learned.

• Opportunity for the public to see 4-H in action.

• 4-H’ers receive feedback on their exhibits through education, evaluation, en-couragement.

• Provide families a chance to work and have fun together.

What do ribbon colors mean?

Iowa 4-H uses the Danish system of judging - rather than competing against someone else, youth

challenge themselves to create exhibits that represent their best. The Danish system places exhib-

its in groups representing standards met. Judging is intended to educate, evaluate, and encourage.

Purple means the exhibit exceeded standards. It is the highest ribbon awarded.

Blue means the exhibits met all standards well.

Red means the exhibits met some standards well, but could use improvement on other standards.

White means the exhibit needs improvement on many standards or is missing information critical to evaluation.

FAIR

Pre-Fair

Set-up

Setup for County Fair will be on Tuesday and Thursday

evening July 10th and 12th at 5:00 pm. All Clubs are

expected to assist. Please find Tom Graham upon

arrival.

Booth Decorating

Clubs can decorate their booths on July 11th from

5-8 pm. You may come back on July 17th during open-

class judging to finish up. Remember your theme is

Grow It, Show It and Let Us All Know It

Flag Raising

7:45 a.m. Thursday, July 19th. The County Council

would like to challenge each club to have as many of

your members and families present at the flag raising as

possible. In the past the attendance has been minimal at

best and we believe that is not a true representation of

us as 4-H members. See you at the Flag!

Pre-Fair Orientation

County Council would like to invite any new member or any

member who has not exhibited in a particular species or

indoor to a pre-fair orientation. We will walk you through

exactly what you will need to do from the moment you get

in the building or step out of the truck through the end of

fair. As one new 4-H mom commented last year, “We

knew exactly what to do and attending orientation made

the whole process so much easier!”

Indoor Exhibits

Photography Label

You have two options for photography labels. The state

fair has gone to a 3 question format—so that is the label

you will find on the state website. We have decided to

stay with the previous form, but an updated version. It

is on the website. Either of these will be accepted. If

you use the “3 questions” form—please be very detailed

in how you took the picture, the camera, settings, enlarg-

ing, enhancing, mounting, etc. The write up is very im-

portant, as in any exhibit.

Horticulture—Change of Judging Time!

4-H Horticulture judging will be on Saturday, July 14th

from 9am to noon. For some great tips on selecting

and displaying your produce go to

www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects and select

Horticulture on the right side of the page! Follow the

links for displaying vegetables. You may also want to

consider coming to the workshop on July 5th.

Reminder-Copyrights

If your exhibit is copyrighted (college logos, Disney

Characters, etc.) it cannot be displayed without proof of

permission being granted by the owner of the copyright.

College logos are usually pretty easily obtained, but it

may take a couple of weeks. For corporate logos, etc.

check their websites for copyright permissions or contact

the Extension Office. A sample letter to obtain is

available on our website.

Food and Nutrition

Any one bringing a perishable food exhibit (cakes,

cookies, pies, etc.) is asked to also bring a picture of your

product. The photo and your “write up” and recipe will

be displayed. Please take a look at 4-H 3023

“Inappropriate Food Exhibits for Iowa 4-H Fairs.” The

link is on our website. Once your entry is judged, it will

be paced in the bake sale. Funds from the bake sale go

toward 4-H programming.

your responsibilities to any guests in the building.
