Primary
The successful student…• Attends all lessons• Opens learning dialogues• Develops independence• Works smart• Shows resilience• Balances Life• Recognises that “Bare Minimum” ≠ Success• GCSEs are a Marathon (not a sprint!)
High ExpectationsTweak to Transform!....
• We all have high expectations of our children's future
• At George Abbot our high expectations also extend to:
• Attitude• Uniform / jewellery / make-up• Behaviour
Keeping Year 9 Great….Continuing to encourage excellence in all the areas that make Year 9 fantastic….• Excellent organisation • Punctuality• Planning• Being self – motivated• Meeting deadlines
Attendance• 90% attendance = month off during the school year!• 80% attendance = missing a year of Y7-Y11!
Research from the DfES and school data …– 17 missed school days a year =
– One GCSE grade DROP in achievement
Last years Yr11 students who had the lowest attendance didn’t achieve in line with their peers
90% attendance vs less that 90% attendance = one grade less progress per subject
Attendance
Moving forward / Getting older…
• Developing abilities to overcome frustrations• Becoming more resilient• Managing friendships themselves
Early signs of stress• Staying up late/difficulty waking up.• Unwillingness to discuss school work.• Not wanting to come to school.• Regular illness/unexplained aches and pains.• Withdrawn and isolating themselves.• Change in habits e.g. eating habits, sleeping patterns.• Loss of interest in things they enjoy.• Irritability and frequent angry episodes.
Moving forward / Getting older…
Ensure you have your facts correct before making a decision
Allow yourself time to give the
response you won’t regret
Count to ten or calm yourself before you act
Think about the consequences of
your actions
Moving forward / Getting older…
Your role as a parent and how you can help?
Your role as a parent
• Having high expectations• Supportive environment / resources
to allow for effective H/W and revision
• Be a study buddy• Be a sounding board and advisor
Parental impact?Spending Time Together100,000 students , 213 cities…
• 50%+ young teens ate with families 5-7 times a week• Less than 33% for older teenagers
Families who ate together:• Better communication• Better school involvement• Better engagement• Higher self esteem• Increased ability to plan
and make decisions • Greater optimism
Those who spent less time:• Alcohol use• Tobacco use• Drug use• Depression• Anti-social
behaviour
Adolescent Health (Fulker 2006)
for the supportive parent/guardian…
• Develop a positive environment at home– Calm/Quiet area– No phone– Create a schedule TOGETHER!!
• Schedule breaks– Suggest chunking work with regular breaks– Work/life balance
• Ask them to discuss their revision/coursework/lessons– Take some time to boost their confidence– Ask them to explain it, after all its possible you know less then they do!– Do they know how to get support in school?
• Learn something yourself– Share the interest and improve the engagement– “We can learn it together”
• Plan for after the exams/assessments (something to look forward to)
Support for you
• Partnership with school and child• Use of Parent Hub• Access SMHW and the new SIMS

GA Student 10
A series of learning behaviours which will allow you to develop your skills
to maximise your achievements within school.
Aims of whole school assessment and reporting.
• Every child knows how they are doing, and understands what they need to do to improve.
• Every teacher is equipped to make well-founded judgements about learners’ attainment and how to plan to improve it.
• Every subject has systems for making regular, useful, manageable and accurate assessments.
• Every parent knows how their child is doing, what they need to do to improve, and how they can support the child and their teachers.
• Every student who requires intervention is identified.
Consistency in Formative Assessment
• Many departments presented formative feedback in different ways.
• Parents often ask how they can help support students but are not sure how.
• Students are often unclear of, can’t find, lose sheets, or just forget formative targets.
Student Reactions - 5Rs

Opportunities Fund
• We need your help!
• Without your support our amazing programme of extra-curricular events and activities cannot happen.
• Opportunities Fund has been established to enable parents and carers to make voluntary contributions to the school to benefit our students.
• The Fund helps us ensure that financial constraints do not affect our ability to continue to provide the extra opportunities which help make our school exceptional.
Projects funded 2018-19The Opportunities Fund last year allowed us to launch a number of initiatives to help our students reach their potential and exceed expectations whilst maintaining good mental health and wellbeing.
• Physical Well Being: We fund the purchase of gym equipment for use in our fitness suite as part of a range of initiatives to promote student well-being
• Outward Bound: Our fleet of minibuses takes our young people all over the region to cultural, career, sporting and community programmes and events.
• Friendship: We contribute resources to our new lunchtime club, run by our Home School Link Worker, aimed at students struggling with friendships
• Mental Health and Well Being: Partnering with Surrey Community Foundation, we fund a series of wellbeing initiatives including a school counsellor, garden and counselling suite.
• Table Tennis: With additional support from Sport England, we fund the installation of outdoor table tennis tables and equipment across all year groups.
