Science in the Dark:
Taking oral DNA
swabs from bats
Research assistants Scott
and Rich work together to
collect DNA from rare bat
species at an important local
hibernation site.
The data will provide insight
into the importance of the
site as a facilitator of
exchange of genetic material
for species which otherwise
find urban landscapes a
barrier to dispersal.

The small hours
Each research project is like an
infatuation. You talk about it incessantly
and overwhelm your friends and family
with the details of your progress.
It dwarfs many other dimensions of life
into insignificance and if left unattended
disrupts all normal routines. You feel
guilty when your family discovers that
you have been up all night again.

Sonic Texture
Whilst collecting field
recordings (to grow my sonic
library), I take photographs of
the environment I am in. As
of late, I go to local parks to
collect sound textures and
follow the social distancing
rules.
This photo was taken during
a recording session and used
for inspiration to generate
new music.
