What’s the connection?
Today on our time travel adventures, we are going back in time to the Tudor New Forest to the 1500s, about 500 years ago!
This is King Henry VIII – he was on the throne between 1509 and 1547.
Calshot Castle
Henry VIII appointed himself head of the Church of Englandand took control of the monasteries in the New Forest. This changed the landscape dramatically as he changed many into castles, prisons or military bases.
Henry VIII used the castle to protect the coastline from invasion. He had 36 cannons here and a small army.
Why were trees so important?
The Tudor period saw the New Forest being used for a new purpose. The trees were chopped down and used for all sorts of purposes – heating/cooking/building.
How do you think this helped everyday life?
This was the start of industrialisation. However it also saw the landscape change as trees started being chopped down more and more.
New Tudor rules
The Tudor period brought new New Forest rules. Hunting was still important but there were now restrictions on what to hunt. Hunting dogs were banned.
This meant more animals were surviving instead of being hunted and killed, changing the landscape once again.
New Tudor rules
People who broke the Tudor New Forest rules were sent to Henry VIII’s prison in the forest.
The New Rules protected the trees from being chopped down by common people for their own use.
New Forest ponies
Henry VIII wanted big horses as they would be more useful but local common people liked the smaller ponies. They decided to protect the breed and ever since ponies have thrived in the New Forest.
Today, the New Forest pony is one of the most famous types in the country and is a significant part of the landscape.
