The North Pole: silvery and glacial,

majestic and haunting…the kind of

place that lives long in the memory.

The snow – powdery and everywhere -

has been criss-crossed by sleigh

trails like deep slashes in a vast,

white blanket. In the distance, a

lone red deer can be heard, howling

at the night sky, which is swathed

in the blurry, opal green Northern

Lights. A constant, vicious gale is

scratching in desperation at your

face, as you taste its bitterness,

on your lips…

Slap bang in the middle of the North Pole, there

lies a huge, well-lit monstrosity of a building,

known as Santa’s Grotto. It’s here where many

elves work - from dawn to dusk - on the sewing

and sorting, hammering and haggling to get

children’s presents ready for Christmas. All

year round, the chubby-faced elves, who aren’t a

happy lot, toil in a grubby, deafening workshop.

Some wear ear plugs to drown out the noise;

others use sign language to communicate over the

cacophony of machines and drills. The more

orders that Santa gives them, the more the elves

become irate with their working conditions. Who

could blame them?
